Avoiding Plagiarism

What it is and how to avoid it…

September 8th, 2016

Learning Target:

Today I will understand and clearly be able to explain what plagiarism is and the expectations and guidelines for turning in my own work.

Definition

Plagiarism is the act of presenting the words, ideas, images, sounds, or the creative expression of others as your own.

When have you plagiarized?

If you have copied, included, or downloaded the words and ideas of others in your work without citing the source.

If you have had help you wouldn’t want your teacher to know about! (Your best friend wrote your essay.)

Two types of plagiarism:

Intentional Copying a friend’s/sibling’s work

Buying or borrowing papers

Cutting and pasting blocks of text from electronic sources without documenting

Media “borrowing” without documenting

Two types of plagiarism:

Unintentional:

Careless paraphrasing

Poor documentation

Quoting excessively

Now that you know the difference, there is only one type: INTENTIONAL.

Example:

You like this text:

In the books, Aragorn is what we call a “real man.” He is self-assured, wise, strong, a true leader with bearing, and proud in the best sense of that word.

Your wording:

Aragorn is what we call a “real man.” He is self-assured, strong, wise, a true leader, and proud in a positive way.

No citation…because you changed a few words around.

Incorporate quotations

Direct quotations should be made part of your own sentence—do not simply insert a sentence into your paragraph.

Put a parenthetical citation directly after the quotation.

Optional: Set up the quote in the body of your essay by mentioning the source.

Cheating

Plagiarism is just one form of cheating

Other examples of cheating: looking at another’s test/quiz; copying and pasting from the Internet; using unauthorized notes on an essay, test or quiz; communicating during a test/quiz

Excuses that don’t work:

Everyone does it!

I was too busy to write that paper!

My teachers expect too much.

It’s okay if I don’t get caught.

The assignment was boring.

There is no other way to say it!
