CLUB PROJECTS UPDATE
Vincent’s Homeless Project Just to let you all know, the final count for 2017
was 1720. Extra bags were made up on Thursday
night and they went to Spiers centre, Women’s
Refuge, Salvation Army, Good Samaritans.
Thank you all again so much, HRC members,
Angela, and Rotaractors x 7, who gave their time
and help with everything. Special thanks from
Vincent & Pina.
Regards Linda
Thanks to Linda’s dogged determination and hard
work a presentation to the Padbury Primary
School of the defibrillator was wonderful and
gratefully received.
Linda also made a show case presentation about the Rotary Club of Hillarys to Duncraig
Senior High School which was very well received and well worth the effort. Great
promotion for our Club.
ROTARACT CLUB OF HILLARYS
Activities report:
We first started working on small projects in 2016
where we helped out with:
- Pink Ribbon/Daffodil Day stalls at Whitfords
Shopping Centre
- A Christmas Lunch for Grandparents Raising
Grandchildren
- Replacing the worn down carpet at the home
of a man with Cerebral Palsy
- Helping out at free Mothers and Fathers Day
sausage sizzles
We then had our Charter Dinner on the 7th March
2017 at Hans Cafe, where we were lucky enough to
be joined by the past, present, and incoming District
Governors for the 9455 Rotary District. Since then we
have been involved with a few small projects
Including:
- Collecting foreign coins as part of a RAM
fundraiser
- Collecting can lids to be used for making
prosthetics in disadvantaged countries
- Co organising a musical soiree fundraiser for
the Containers for East Timor Project
- Volunteering at the Rotary/Rotaract Stall at
the Duncraig SHS Showcase Day
- We were involved with the organising of the
Rotaract Joint District Changeover
- We supported the South Perth Rotaract Club
in their Rotaract’s Got Talent Event
- Volunteering at the packing day for Vincent’s
Project for the Homeless
- Volunteering at the Hillarys Rotary Fair
Both the Interact and Rotaract Clubs have been such fantastic quiet achievers with their projects. PRID Dr Ken Collin was so impressed with what the Interact Club had set up for his Polio Plus presentation at St Stephens school and that they have taken on Polio Plus as one of their projects.
NATIONAL STROKE WEEK
Joondalup Health Campus have kindly offered
for our Club to have a display and information
stall in their main foyer during National Stroke
Week, 4 – 10 September. Members are asked
to give some time to looking after the stall and
speaking to people about Rotary. Jacquie Har-
ry is co-ordinating this so please let her know
your availabilities.
ARRIVAL OF OUR NEW EXCHANGE
STUDENT – Lindford Van Lerberghe from
Belgium arrived on Saturday 22 July and was
greeted by some Club members and Claire and
Kirsty Stocks (his first host family).
At Lindford’s first meeting President Greg
introduced him to the members and gave him
his first job – passing round the bed pan!
CHANGEOVER NIGHT— District Governor Lindsay Dry had great pleasure in presenting a very
surprised and delighted Jacqui Harry with a Paul Harris Fellow for her work on District projects.

Maureen McKenzie with Pres Greg and Jane Sam Hopson with Brandon Lombard
Unfortunately the photos from Changeover Night have not turned out well enough to reproduce here.
The first meeting after Changeover was a Forum Night where all Committees met and discussed their
future plans.
We also had a visit from Rotarian, President Jen Jenkyn and his wife Georgena from the
Esperance Club. Ken, PP Peter McKenzie were early members along with Jeff Trudgian who was a
Charter member of one of our antecedent Clubs, the Rotary Club of Sorrento and always makes a
point of visiting us whenever he’s in Perth.
Sad news from Rotary International
Vale Rotary International President-Elect Sam F. Owori
Sadly died unexpectedly on 13 July due to complications from surgery. Sam was a member of the Rotary
Club Kampala, Uganda, for 38 years.
“Rotary has become a way of life for me – with the intrinsic value and core belief in mutual
responsibility and concern for one another as a cornerstone,” Sam said when he was nominated last year.
“I feel immense satisfaction knowing that through Rotary, I’ve helped someone live better.”
Sam's term as Rotary’s 108th president would have begun on 1 July 2018.
“Please remember Sam as the outstanding, hardworking Rotarian he was,” said Rotary International Pres-
ident Ian Riseley. “In this difficult time, I ask you to keep his wife, Norah, the Owori family, and Sam’s
millions of friends around the world in your thoughts.”
Under Sam's leadership, the number of clubs in Uganda swelled from nine to 89 over the course of 29
years.
Sam saw in Rotary members "an incredible passion to make a difference," and wanted to "harness that
enthusiasm and pride so that every project becomes the engine of peace and prosperity."
