SUNDAY OPEN NOON-4
Posttraumatic stress disorder or PTSD, is a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to any event that results in psychological trauma on a physical, emotional or mental level and that overwhelms the individual’s ability to cope.
These people can experience fl ashbacks or nightmares, avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma, diffi culty falling or staying asleep, and anger issues.
These symptoms often last much longer than one month after the event and impair the ability of the person to work and maintain their social functioning.
Tim, age 45, came
into my offi ce recently wanting help with PTSD.
The event had occurred one year prior and he felt he could be doing more to help himself.
His MD (medical doctor) had prescribed antidepressants for his anxiety and sleeping medications for his insomnia.
He did not want to be taking these the rest of his life. He was getting good results from seeing a counselor as well.
I explained to Tim the multi-system approach of naturopathic medicine where we just don’t look at his symptoms but the underlying contributing causes.
The top three are defi ciencies of nutrients, a poor diet
and poor gut health. In addition to
these, his adrenal glands which are the glands that get depleted with any kind of stress would need long term support to get them back to optimal function.
I explained that in a comprehensive blood chemistry test I would look for other areas of weakness such as the thyroid and liver function.
I also explained that food causes all kinds of symptoms including fatigue, irritability and blood sugar problems.
I had him complete my hypoglycemia questionnaire which
indicated that his blood sugar was very unstable contributing to many of his
symptoms. My approach
to this is making sure that he was getting good quality protein more regularly and as snacks in place of simple carbohydrates that contribute to the
hypoglycemia. Low glycemic carbohydrates metabolize more slowly so they don’t cause the fast rise and drop in blood sugar that simple carbohydrates do.
Tim was drinking pop with artifi cial
sweetener which also contributes to the addiction for sweets.
I taught him to make home made herbal iced teas using stevia or xylitol.
His wife was very supportive to adopt many of my recipe recommendations so that he could take better lunches to work and have better meals at home.
Eating out a lot is not conducive to healthy eating so this is why I have created a recipe book to help people makes changes at home.
As with most people who come

ALERT BAY—North Vancouver Island is fi lled with historical artifacts preserved and protected at fi xed sites.
But one of the most well-known historical items on this small, Cormorant Island community is still quite lively, and it dropped in on the local airstrip for a short visit.
A 1937 Waco AQC-6 cabin biplane, piloted for more than 25 years by Alert Bay doctor Jack Pickup, was fl own from its new home at the Canadian Museum
of Flight in Langley to Alert Bay and Port McNeill for a day of reminiscence in both communities.
“I had fl own in that plane with Dr. Pickup, and he was pretty casual about his fl ying,” said Gerry Furney, the Port McNeill Mayor who has lived in the community since the 1950s. “I asked him once if he had ever fl own over to Mount Waddington and he said, ‘No, but now that you remind me, why don’t we pop over?’”
Pickup, the legendary “Flying Doctor”, used the Waco
(pronounced WAH-co) to treat patients over a vast stretch of rural B.C. from the time he purchased the plane in 1953 until he donated it to the museum in 1980.
Equipped with fl oats for use as a seaplane by Pickup, the bright red-and-white Waco was seen in the waters of the bay fronting the town. It returned outfi tted with wheels following a nearly 20-year restoration effort. Its crew included pilot Bill Findlay, co-pilot Dave Beales and engineer Bob Fowles.
The plane’s recent
visit was initiated by Alert Bay’s Neil Langille, several months earlier. With fuel donations from Shoprite Marine in Alert Bay and Furney
Distributing and the Port McNeill Flying Club in Port McNeill, the Waco led a small fl eet of three planes from the museum to Alert Bay Aug. 4.
“Over the course of the afternoon and the next morning we had 80 some-odd people go up to the airstrip to see it,” Alert Bay Mayor Michael Berry said. “On their way over to McNeill the Waco and the other two planes did a fl yover of the Eco Paddle and got some
great aerial shots.”A smaller, but
appreciative, crowd welcomed the planes in Port McNeill, where Bill Velie of 101 North Island Squadron presented the pilots with a $100 donation and a Civil Air Search and Rescue pin. The Alert Bay Legion also donated $100, and Langille and former Alert Bay Mayor John Rowell made personal donations.
The Waco, built in 1937 in Troy, Mich.,
was originally purchased by the Department of National Defence, Ottawa, and operated by the Department of Transport. In 1951 it was sold to Medicine Hat, and in 1952 to the West Coast (Malpass Logging, then BC Air Lines). In 1953 it was acquired by Pickup, who, in 1980, donated it to the Canadian Museum of Flight. Its restoration was completed in 2002, when the Waco took its fi rst test fl ight in more than 20 years. During its years of service, the Waco suffered a series of minor crashes on landings, and once sunk in 1958 after Pickup hit a partially submerged log while attempting to take off. It was just one of several working planes fl own by Dr. Pickup before he retired in 1992 at 73, but it was the airplane used for the vast majority of his career.

in to see me I see huge defi ciencies of basic nutrients mainly calcium and magnesium, B vitamins and essential fatty acids.
I always prescribe calcium with magnesium in the citrate form, taken at bedtime, as this has a nice calming effect on the body to help with the quality and quantity of sleep.
I will use a B complex with a higher dose of B6 for a period of time as this vitamin is especially useful for
depression, anxiety and irritability.
Essential fatty acids such as EPA and DHA found in fi sh oil is well documented to be important for brain health and is used in all types of mental and emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety.
These need to be prescribed in therapeutic dosages to be effective.
I explained to Tim that these remedies are recommended for life and that the longer he was on
them, the better he would feel.
The immediate effect would be an improvement in sleep, less irritability and increased energy.
In addition to educating Tim about these basic concepts I also treated him using some of my specialty remedies.
Weaning him off sleeping medications was possible using
Rubimeds as well as different remedies that not only helped with sleep but also his anxiety.
Anxiety is a huge component for PTSD and treating the adrenal glands is critical.
I was able to give Tim remedies that were effective, which gave him the confi dence that he was more in control of
his situation.Getting Tim off the
antidepressants can be more challenging and once he has the confi dence in his progress we will be working on that.
Once Tim has established a good foundation of health then he will be ready. PTSD treatment
requires lots of support from spouses and family as well as professionals but there is hope if the required effort is applied.
To quote Susan Vreeland: “The persistence of hope tapping us on our shoulders is a good thing because it reminds us of the
larger picture and keeps us breathing on our worst days.”

Bruno MungerSpecial to MidWeek
On the last day of exploring the beautiful North Island near Port McNeill with my dad and brother Matthew, we stopped for one last try at jigging for a bottom fi sh.
My dad is not much of a halibut fi sherman so after losing our only true halibut gear within 10 minutes he put on a buzz bomb-style jig and handed the rod over to me, reminding me to please keep the hook off the bottom. Dad had barely time to cut up a
muffi n when I got stuck at the bottom. Dad tells me to loosen the 35-pound line and try to get it free while he prepares the food.
“I am only eight and this is stuck for good,” I tell him.
So he grabs the rod and starts pulling hard. The cheap rod bends almost to a breaking point and we notice that dad is able to gain a few inches.
While slowly retracting the line, inch by inch, dad suddenly notices a few tugs. Having caught a few halibut before, we realize that 140 feet
down there seems to be a fair sized fi sh on the line. After a tiring 25 minutes we slowly see a ‘ginormous’ carpet-like fi sh approaching the surface.
We immediately realize we have no way of dealing with a fi sh of this size. Just as we are battling the fi sh, thick fog rolls in and the only boat we can see nearby is a 10-foot dinghy.
Teresa and Steve, owners of the dinghy, offer their help. Dad reels in the fi sh ever so gently while Steve hooks the gaff into its mouth. One huge splash later, the gaff is split in half and the fi sh is on its way down deep again. Steve retreats to his dinghy and reverts to documenting the event with his video camera.
It takes another 10
long minutes to get the fi sh back to the surface.
Dad gets on the radio and asks if there is a fi shing boat near our position.
Thank God dad knows a lot of people up that way and quickly we hear: “Hey Bruno, this is Bill Mackay from the Naiad Explorer.”
Dad tells him the story.
Ten minutes later we see a boat breaking through the fog and we hear a call: “This is Ed from Sund’s Fishing Lodge. Are you the guy who needs help with a fi sh?”
Yup, that’s us! What luck that Bill
found one of the best halibut fi shermen in the area who was fi shing nearby and on top of that, willing to come and help us three ill-equipped hobby jiggers.
He jumps on board and gets ready to harpoon the fi sh.
Once speared, it disappears again.
After a while, Ed brings up the fi sh and tells us that he would be uncomfortable to put it on our boat, especially with two kids on board.
Halibut have trashed many boats and it would take up all the room in the back. Ed loads the fi sh on his boat and brings it back to Sund Lodge where we could collect it later. The fi sh measured 170 centimetres or 67 inches. According to the Halibut Measurement Table that is the equivalent of 155 pounds, or as I call it “one pound heavier than you, dad!”
A true fi shing story from the eye of an eight-year-old boy.

Fishing Cornerwith Don Danielsemail: dond@campbellrivermirror.com August has been an ideal month for fi shing in all areas north and west of Campbell River. In my books the top story of the month is the 73 pound spring caught and released at Bella Bella.
At Nootka Sound the inside fi shing has been hit and miss, the outside fi shing has been better. 20 pound springs are being caught on the Salmon Highway 15 miles straight out from Ferrer Point, fi shing in 320 feet of water. Best success has been in 90 to 125 feet of water. Anglers are using bait and patterned spoons, plugs and hoochies. Big colored springs are starting to gather in front of Conuma, the kayak fi shing derby at Moucha Bay resort runs September 1st and 2nd. When it comes to fi shing at Discovery Pier in Campbell River Jamie Dunn is king of the pier at the moment with catches of springs 10.5, 28 and 32 pounders, also a Coho released at 10 pounds. Also on the pier, Linda Henuset landed a 22 pound spring on August 20th. The Tyee pool has been very active with some nice fi sh coming in and more are expected to come in before the Tyee season ends September 15th. Nine Tyee have been brought in weighing between 34 and 39.5 pounds. Angler John Woodward with rower R.D. Berger have the big one at 39.5 pounds. Anita Painter got her 34 pound rowing with Ed Painter who has been rowing and fi shing for25 years.
