H i , a l l ! Man, this summer is hot! But not as hot as “The Heat is On” show that is posted on our website. This was our second such event and once again it brought out some new ar sts, some not even in our Alliance. If you
didn’t take a look, you missed out on some very nice artwork. Also, if you want to see more of the Award Winners’ works of art, you can now see more of their crea vity and read about them at, h ps://azartalliance.com/featured‐ar sts/. This is a new feature on our website. In the future, all ar sts receiving ribbons from all of our Exhibits will be awarded spots in our Online Gallery “Winners’ Circle.” A nice touch, if I may say so. Don’t you think your work would look good there too?
Speaking of Exhibits, our Call to Ar sts for the 3rd Annual “ART in pARTnership” October 2017 Exhibit at the Holland Gallery has been posted to our website, h ps://azartalliance.com/call‐to‐ar sts/. This Exhibit promises to be be er than ever and if you are a member ar st of ANY of our AZ Art Alliance Member Leagues, you don’t want to let this one pass you by.
Also, we are now working hard to finalize the details for our upcoming League Exhibit, “A League of Their Own,” also to be exhibited at the Holland Gallery during the months of June and July 2018. This show will bring back something we used to do back in the old days….that is, showing by Member League. This opportunity will give our Leagues a chance to show the world what our different organiza ons can do as a group. It will be up to each Member League to determine its own requirements as far as par cipa on in “A League of Their Own.” This Exhibit is going to be a blast and a chance to get everyone together and compare notes. We hope to make this a yearly event, just like the other Exhibits we have put on over the past few years. All of our Member Leagues will begin receiving info around the first of this month.
There are other opportuni es we are now exploring and we hope to have some more ideas for discussion at our next Rep Mee ng on August 25th. These mee ngs are a great opportunity for our Leagues to have input and to help shape the future direc on of our Alliance.
Lot’s going on here, so stay crea ve!

Please welcome our newest Arizona Art Alliance Board Member: Kaz Wilder (Just “Kaz”). Kaz is the President of the Art Explorers AZ, and a dynamic personality.
Her talents reach across almost every aspect of the art world (Really! All types of art and all over the world.) Her biography shows her to be an ar st accomplished in many forms of art media, a teacher, a photojournalist, a lecturer, an author of published educa onal series, and a business entrepreneur in mul ple niches in the art world. She says, “Whether crea ng art, viewing it or being surrounded by art in homes or businesses, art has profound effects on our psychological and physical well‐being.” Her Mission seems to be to “expose” everyone to art and culture, “for the health of it”. It’s difficult to condense her story down to fit this publica on. Where she has been, what she has done and what she con nues to do make a wonderful story of a full life in the world of art. We are fortunate to have her voice and perspec ve at the table in leading the Arizona Art Alliance forward and our member group Art Explorers AZ. Art Explorers AZ is a community of ar sts and art enthusiasts seeking excep onal experiences in the art and cultural world. They specialize in connec ng ar sts and art enthusiasts in varied social and learning environments. Expand your horizons with their like‐minded, friendly members at ar st recep ons, gallery openings, museum docent tours, art lectures, plays, art films, in mate concerts, symphonies, opera events, private art gatherings, special art venues, ruins, historical homes/architectural masterpieces, art classes and workshops, studio tours, plein air, garden bird walks/bu erfly ou ngs, Arabian horses, and monthly ar st/art appreciator mee ngs, and more.
ArtExplorersAZ.com is their private website specializing in remarkable Select Events for curious palates, and houses their inclusive Art League where ar sts learn essen al skills, gain valuable experience, and advance their dreams and careers via monthly art mee ngs and juried art shows. Meetup.com/Art‐Explorers is their largest community of 2,000+ for a ending art and cultural events valley‐wide and around Arizona, bringing friendly member ar sts and art appreciators together via 15‐35 essen al socializa on opportuni es per month. Check out their diverse schedule! Ready to meet some new art friends? ArtAdvenstureswithKaz.com engages their more adventurous members on art and cultural local jaunts, and people‐to‐people tours around Arizona, na onally, and interna onally, as inspira on for crea ng art, or documen ng life me memories together. Visit them for their next scheduled 1, 2, 3 day or 8 day trips, and view their Cuba, Canyon de Chelly, and Havasupai Canyon photos from recent trips! I know Pat Beans. But I don’t know Pat well enough. I suppose, one can never know such an extraordinary person all that well. Pat was ge ng up there in years when I first met her back in 2001. She was Treasurer for our Alliance back then and if I am not mistaken she was also Treasurer of the Sco sdale Art League. I know she was an ac ve member of the Arizona Watercolor Society, and maybe even Treasurer there too. There is so much that I don’t know about Pat, but I do know this; I know that I have seen enough to tell everyone how deserving she is of our “Volunteer Hall of Honor. Pat is not only a fabulous volunteer; she is also a very accomplished ar st. When she would have a paint brush in her hand, one would never know what was going to
Pat’s mind was. She was never afraid to voice her opinion. When I became President of our Alliance, she always presented her thoughts on the subject when asked. O en, she tempered my frequent “off‐the‐wall” direc on. She would some mes my proof work and kept my communica ons with you all readable and coherent. I don’t get see Pat much anymore. Ge ng around has become pre y tough. But she’s ac ve doing something, I know. Her work s ll shows up in our exhibits. She s ll has “it” and has no problem ge ng past the scru ny of our jurors. We sure miss having her around. Her service was humongous in nature and her presence is sorely missed. Her spirit will always be present within our Alliance. Her many contribu ons over the years are pre y much unmatched. Her humor and wit are s ll with us today!

come next. Pat created with several different paint mediums, but those were not near as diverse as Pat’s mind and what she could come up with. I remember one me while viewing one of her pain ngs, I wondered what the heck it was? She walked up to me and I asked her. She informed me that it was a cow pa y. “Who would of thunk?” But upon knowing what it was, I could see, it was a sure enough a cow pa y! She laughed and then walked away probably thinking, “What kind of s nking ques on was that?” In day’s past when we would exhibit throughout many Valley loca ons, Pat would always be an integral part of ge ng things organized and made sure things were running smoothly. When we had our Gallery, Pat was always one that would volunteer for extra hours. I would watch her walking in on her “ever‐present walker”, arriving from her home in Chandler. She would man the fort for hours never complaining, just taking care of business. I always admired how sharp

Juried status provides you with a discounted fee into most exhibits, priority into exclusive shows sponsored by the Alliance, and the pres ge of being a recognized ar st. Below is the step‐by‐step process for obtaining juried status with the Arizona Art Alliance. STEP ONE Confirm you are a member of one of the art groups listed on the Membership page of our website: You must be a current paid member in order to proceed with this process. On our Home Page, click on “ABOUT,” then “MEMBER GROUPS” to verify your affiliated art group is listed.
STEP TWO Decide which art category you will be applying for juried status: There are FOUR categories and each category contains several mediums. Each of the four categories listed require a separate set of images and an addi onal fee. Each medium within a category does NOT require a separate applica on. Category 1: 2D – Pastel, pencil, graphite, ink, charcoal, scratchboard (all work that is done u lizing a drawing mechanism)
Category 2: 2D – Oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media (all work that is done u lizing a brush, pale e knife, or 2D assemblage/collage materials)
Category 3: 2D – Computer art, digital photography, tradi onal photography, digital art
Category 4: 3D – Glass, wood, gourds, po ery, jewelry and sculpture
STEP THREE Be prepared for what the JURORS will be looking for when they evaluate your work: All art will be evaluated by more than one juror and he/she will be scoring each piece the six criteria below: 1. Composi on; 2. Rhythm; 3. Logic; 4. Handling of Medium; 5. Imagina on/Originality; and, 6. Overall Impact/Merits of Presenta on.
STEP FOUR Select three of your highest quality art pieces to show for jurying: Images of your artwork must be 300 dpi JPEG without frames, ma ng, pedestals, or any distrac ng background in the image. Make sure the images all fit ONE category (see the categories in #2 above). Take note of where your images are located on your computer or phone gallery so you can find them easily before star ng the process. The images can be those already sold or those currently available for sale. STEP FIVE Have your credit card or debit card out to make your $25 payment. STEP SIX Go to our Home Page, click on the “ARTIST” tab, click “GET JURIED” on the drop down menu to complete your applica on: You will be using a system that is used locally and na onally by many art organiza ons and galleries called “EntryThingy” to submit your images and make your payment. If new to this system, you will need to enter your email address and create a password which will be used again if/when you enter into our art exhibits. We encourage first me users to view the video that is available on the registra on page, which walks you through the pages that will need to be completed and gives you an inside view of how the system works.
Please allow 3‐6 weeks for the jurying process. You will be no fied by email or le er of your status and will receive a paper cer ficate if awarded juried status.

Opportunity House kids worked in watercolor during their art class on June 22. Marianne Graff demonstrated how to create a background on their paper using a variety of colors; moving from light areas to darker areas. She
explained how to make soft edges, how to make hard edges, and how to blend colors together while wet. After a practice period, the kids then used 300 lb. soft press paper to create their own backgrounds. They finished their paintings by adding a map of Arizona in the foreground, along with an Arizona plant or animal of their choice. The results were great!
Opportunity House Summer Art Program ended with a display of all the art, awarding of ribbons and prizes, and distributing certificates and art gifts from Arizona Art Supply. The kids played a few games, had a birthday celebration for one of the students, and left carrying all their artwork and a donated school bag full of schoolroom supplies. It was great fun, with lots of smiles and good-bye hugs.
Opportunity House kids created air-dried clay masterpieces at the June 15 art class. Instructor Beth Morgan introduced and explained the term bas relief as an art form. She showed the kids how to first form a clay area with a smooth surface using rollers, water, and craft sticks. This represented a smooth wall. The kids then used more clay to create a bas relief "attachment" of their own design to the smooth surface of their "wall." The kids could also create additional designs on their smooth surfaces using various tools and cutters. A couple of sequins and beads added a finishing touch!

Judy Bihary led a wonderful class on weaving. She showed them samples of weaving and then provided the kids with individual looms made with natural twig frames. Then Judy explained several terms that weavers use and showed the kids how to "over" and "under" through the loomed threads using long needles or craft sticks. The kids could choose from strips of colored leather, fibers, cloth, or yarn to create their own woven designs. No two pieces of art work were alike. The kids had a great time!
Thank you all and an extra special thank you to Arizona Art Supply for the donated art supplies! The Opportunity House After-School program will begin during the last week of September.

As always I a empt to create examples of the type of art I am discussing.
I thought we would begin today with a foreign language lesson. I don’t know how many of you are familiar with SHANLAND. It is a gorgeous island surrounded by ocean, teal blue skies and wispy clouds. There are approximately 3000 restaurants per person in SHANLAND – all very inexpensive. No one ever gets sick in this unique loca on and it is illegal to frown or be mean. (I should probably men on that SHANLAND exists only in my mind.) The language on this idyllic island is quite complicated. In fact, I am the only living person who both speaks and understands SHANGUAGE. Let me give you a few examples. “Splurgity” translates to “May I please have seconds of this amazing dessert.” “Lolikey” means “I love you and like you.” “JAA means “No,” and is a word that is not used very o en.
It might interest you to know that I have been offered $6,000,000 for both.
Now, Dear Readers, un l next month…
I have one final thing to say,
One of my artsy friends shared with me last week that “JAA” also has another meaning in the real world – “JEWELRY AS ART.” How was I to know? Jewelry Art emphasizes crea ve expression and design. It uses a variety of materials o en of no great value. It contrasts with fine jewelry and forms a counterbalance to the use of precious materials (gold, silver, and gemstones) where the value of the object is ed to the value of the material used. Jewelry Art is related to studio cra , but also has links to fine art and design. Many regions, such as North America, Europe, Australia and parts of Asia have flourishing Jewelry Art scenes.
Now for some examples!
Hi, everyone! My name is Stephanie Dasalla and I am the new editor of the Alliance’s newsletter, Art Matters! I currently live and work in Sacramento, California. I work for the County of Sacramento as a Human Services Program Planner. We plan for and administer mental health services in our community. I’ve been a member of VolunteerMatch, a web-based volunteer network, since approximately 2007. I have volunteered for many non-profit organizations over the years and have served as a newsletter editor in a virtual capacity for three non-profit organizations. I enjoy creating newsletters because it fosters my joy of writing and visual art. I find using my skills to promote the mission of non-profit organizations to be very rewarding. Volunteering provides synergy and sparkle to my life! Looking for new synergy and sparkle, I perused the VolunteerMatch website for a volunteer opportunity and stumbled upon a listing from the Alliance. I was immediately drawn to the artistic and humanistic mission of the Alliance—two things that I am passionate about and that motivate me. I quickly clicked the “I want to help” button and waited for a response. I didn’t have to wait long because Mike Brady contacted me the very next day! Woohoo! I was so excited to hear back and even more excited as Mike explained more about the Alliance. Shortly thereafter, Mike Brady and the rest of the Board of Directors welcomed me to the Alliance team! I am super excited to accept the torch from Kathy Koneski and carry on this creative communication vehicle for the Alliance! Thank you to everyone who has been so warm and welcoming. This has reinforced my initial impression—the Alliance is a great organization of great people!
Volunteering adds sparkle to
my life!
