DESCRIPTION

When the Auburn Avenue underpass was built in the 1950s, it cut the street in half, severing the continuity of this historic commercial district. The impending Streetcar development presents an opportunity to address the underpass and reconnect the urban fabric. The Historic District Development Corporation was asked to conduct research and present ideas on potential redevelopment concepts. The attached presentation illustrates how cities across the country and the world have turned an underpass into an asset. If Atlanta utilizes its creative potential and the Auburn Avenue underpass is redeveloped thoughtfully rather than just an afterthought maintenance facility, it could be turned into a “gateway” as opposed to a “barrier.” Of primary importance is how the area that directly abuts the sidewalk is treated.
