Amistad Revolt

• Most famous slave revolt on ship• Amistad means “Friendship” in Spanish• 1839 revolt on Spanish ship• Joseph Cinque escaped and found weapons below deck

arming slaves• Killed most crew members• Problems-

– Didn’t know where they were– Didn’t know how to pilot ship

• Slaves were extremely crowded

• Slaves were fed very little food

• Slaves were chained to the ship

• Slaves often died on the journey and were left to be eaten by rats or thrown overboard
