ASRAAMWITHIN VISUAL RANGE AIR DOMINANCE WEAPON
In WVR combat, the ability to strike first is vital.A pilot engaging an enemy needs a missile that is ableto react more rapidly than ever before, with the speedand agility to maximise the probability of a killregardless of the target aircraft’s evasive manoeuvresor the deployment of countermeasures.
It is with these requirements firmly in mind that ASRAAM has beendeveloped to totally redefine WVR combat. Higher speed, combined with optimised aerodynamics create increased agility. This makes ASRAAM the best WVR missile available. Its 166mm(6.5 inch) diameter rocket motor and very low drag, aerodynamicairframe, gives ASRAAM unrivalled speed and manoeuvrabilitythroughout the flight envelope. ASRAAM has full ‘Lock On BeforeLaunch’ and ‘Lock On After Launch’ operating modes.
Proven in service, multi-platform flexibility
ASRAAM is in service with the UK Royal Air Force and the RoyalAustralian Air Force. India has also ordered the weapon for overwing carriage on its Jaguar aircraft. Already fully integrated withproven reliability on Eurofighter Typhoon, Tornado and F/A-18,ASRAAM is also integrated onto the F-35 Lightning II.
Operational advantages
First shot – first kill
• LOBL and LOAL cued through multiple sensors:radar, IRST, HMS, 3rd party
• Fast rise batteries allow for fast reaction
• Unmatched thrust and speed is achieved by the large 166mm(6.5 inch) diameter rocket motor giving high speed off the railand throughout the entire flight envelope
• Predictive tracking and the IIR seeker provide high precision
• Outstanding resistance to countermeasures
Combined, significantly increases launch aircraft survivability
