This will be my last newsletter article as your President. I will continue writing as the Chapter’s Administrative Secretary if elected at the May meeting. Joe Hernandez CPD, if elected, will be your President for 2011/2012. The recommended slate of Officers and Directors will be presented prior to the election at the May meeting. I am honored to have been your leader for the preceding three, two year terms. With the support of your dedicated Board of Directors, I be- lieve we have improved in many ways. The quality
educational programs have drawn new members from the A&E firms, and above all, we’ve been able to please all parts of the plumbing industry includ-ing the Design Professionals, Contractors, Labor People and Manufacturers that have attended these meetings.
Quality not quantity of the attendees is what I measure success by. When I see the people in attendance asking questions, participating in the dialogue and staying over until the end, I can say without a doubt we have been suc-cessful. Yes, we can still continue to improve and I am sure under the new incoming Officers and Directors that will happen. The present Board is meet-ing with Joe Hernandez and speaking with other possible new people to serve on the Board as well as those who may be re-elected, in order to facilitate a smooth transition of governing the Chapter.
Joe Hernandez has indicated he will go all out to encourage the design professional firms to get their employees to join ASPE and partake in the educational offerings of the society. I, on the other hand, will be doing the same with the plumbing and mechanical contractors. We both will continue to encourage the continued support of the manufacturers who play a vital role in the success of the Chapter. Joe intends to bring some new ideas in, to enhance and improve getting new members and our current members to our meetings. Joe will need all of our support to have an ongoing successful chapter. He is intending to work toward putting together a CPD course designed to facilitate our attendees in passing the CPD exam. He is also offering to work with the society to fix and or improve the CPD study guides. He understands the need to grow the CPD membership in the society, especially here in Michigan.
To our manufacturers’ representatives, I thank you for your support during these hard economic times. The Board and I have appreciated your kindness and generosity and hope for your continued help and support going forward.
Sincerely,
John Nussbaum IPP, FASSE

On a Tuesday evening, April 19th, 2011, Josh Looper, PE, presented the Program on “Chilled Water Systems”, an overview of common products used in Chilled Water Systems, as an Engineer for the R.L. Deppmann Company.
A PowerPoint presentation on the subject matter, Chilled Water Systems, was very
well delivered and interestingly illustrated. The topics discussed were Chilled Water System’s products, Cooling Tower Water Systems, Systems Fluid products and the necessary Dirt Separa-tion products.
The presentation started with the pumps, the Base-Mounted types, which are of the larger capacity from 40 to 50 HP and larger motors. If space becomes a problem you can go to the Vertical Inline type of pumps, with the same type of large mo-tors. Next important products were the Combo Drive/Control-ler, or the Separate Drive & Controller. Model No. T502 utilizes a Combo Drive/Controller, and up to three additional drives to provide a cost effective Pump Control System, or use the Model No. T5500, that works with up to eight separate drives to provide superior control options including variable-primary control sequences.
Balancing & Flow Control; B&G Circuit Setter is a calibrated ball valve that set the standard for manual balancing. Presto B+ manual balance valve offers a venture-style balancing device. Flow Limiting Devices insures that you get the same flow in that circuit as the pressure change in the system. One is using the B/G circuit Sentry, others are the Griswold Controls Flow Limiting Devices. Additional devices were illustrated. The chilled water coils have a number of B&G Piping Kits that can be manufactured with a multitude of configurations. Griswold Controls CPP Coil Piping Packages can be shipped with control valves. Another model is to use the Griswold Controls PIC-V

that combines the flow regulator and the control valve to pro-vide the best means of controlling flow. An important product that’s very necessary to provide to any system is the Chilled Water Buffer Tank, that adds volume to the system and helps reduce cycling of the chillers, models like Cemline’s CWB Buffer Tank, this tank can also serve as the air separator if it is sized properly.
The Cooling Tower water system is required for Chillers cool-ing, one such model is the Tower Tech’s TTXL Series Towers, they are the most cost effective towers on the market. When a cooling tower is using outside air, they pick up debris from the air streams. Most systems use the Basket Type Strainers; they are a lower-cost option for relatively clean tower systems. A more complete usage would be like the Griswold Water Sys-tems that can be used in side stream and full-stream filtration systems. They offer many options including automatic purge and recovery tank systems. Outside cooling towers require their water to be treated, like using a commercial premixed product, examples would be the DOWFROST, DOWFROST HD and the new DOWFROST GEO20, which are inhibited propylene glycols for freeze protection and corrosion protection in school and food applications. DOWTHERM is an inhibited ethylene glycol used for freeze protection and corrosion protection in a multitude of applications.
Regarding the Dirt Separation Products, we can use the B&G CRS which uses a coalescing medium to remove both air and dirt. It is a great application where first-time removal is criti-
cal. Flows that are above 200 GPM can results in larger units or of the high velocity units. The model B&G SRS (Sediment Removal Separator), uses centrifugal forces caused by the tan-gential action to remove air and dirt. This is a great application for most all applications, a simple design with minimal main-tenance. This completed JOSH’S overall presentation and was opened to any question.
Thank you very much Josh Looper, for a job well done.
Following Josh Looper, Ed Hawley opened with a project done in 1993 at Michigan State University. The project of Revital-ization of the Michigan Animal Agriculture Program, Design and Renovation of Anthony Hall along with Diary Plant and Meat Laboratories was chosen by Ed in order to show a set of drawings from this job, which were for a typical Chilled Water Systems application.
The first drawing was of a basement plan in unit “G”, showing the layout of Chillers and the extra floor space that was needed for servicing of the equipment. There were two 800 ton and one 400 ton, Single Stage Absorption Chillers, pumps, and the overhead piping.
The second & third drawings showed the Equipment Schedules that contained the chiller water loads and requirements.
1. Air Handling Units Schedule, (3,522 to 40,000 CFM)
2. Air Cooled Condensing Unit Schedule, (55 tons and 49,600 CFM)
3. Cooling Tower Schedule, (5 units of 2,000 tons and up to 4,000 GPM)
4. Pumps Schedule, Supply and Return, (from 400 to 3,600 GPM and 11/2 to 100 HP)
The fourth drawing displayed the Air Conditioning Cooling Tower Schematic, indicating all of the necessary equipment, symbols, piping, Description of the Operating Control and general notes.

The fifth drawing showed Cooling Towers for Refrigeration Equipment Schematic, containing labels, symbols, piping sched-ules, and all of the necessary operating controls.
The sixth drawing showed Chilled Water Distribution Schematic, with all the overhead piping, identifying legends, all valves, pumps, chillers, tanks, control station locations, general notes and the Description of the Controls.
To complete this portion of the presentation, we provided cut-sheets, brochures on Chillers, pumps, cooling towers, coils and other general information to have a complete picture of a Chilled Water System.
I thank you for your attention. Josh and I hope the presentations were very educational and that they will increase the general knowledge of all the things around us.
The members again missed a very good dinner and dessert, plus all the EDUCATIONAL information that was provided to the
attendees of the meeting.
