Ribs and Sternum

True ribs (1-7) - attach to the sternum by costal cartilages. The hyaline cartilage makes the breathing process easier. (1.)

False ribs (1-5) – attach to the costal cartilage , not directly to the sternum Instead, the cartilages of the upper three false ribs join the cartilages attached to the ribs above (1.)

Floating ribs(1-2) – have no attachment with the sternum. (1.)

• Total of 7 true ribs on each side, making it 14 true ribs total

• Total of 5 false ribs on each side, making it 10 total false ribs

• Out of the false ribs there are 2 floating ribs on each side, making it a total of 4

The sternum is located in the center of anterior thoracic wall, consist of three segments these segments fuse to form a long flat bone , and also covers and protects the heart. (1.)
