Classobjectives: Theobjectiveofthisclassistobuildthefundamentalsofpainting.Therewillbeanemphasisonthemanipulationofpaint,complexityofsurface,composition,andinformedhandlingofcolor(includingunderstandingofcolortheory/vocabulary).Paintingwillbedoneprimarilyfromworkingfromobservation;stilllife,interiors,andlandscapes.Youwillexploretherelationshipofelementsofdesignanduseofpaint(form)tocontent.

Classcontent: Thiscoursewillintroduceyoutothebasicandvariedtechniquesofpainting.Youwilllearnhowtoprepareseveraltraditionalpaintinggroundsincludingstretchingandprimingcanvas.Youwillworkwithseveralstandardcolorsystemsincludingmonochromatic,analogous,complementary,dominantcolor,andlocalcolor.Youwillworkwithbothquickandsustainedstudies.Youwilllearntoeffectivelyrendertheeffectoflightonform,usingpaint,to

giveastrongillusionofthree-dimensionalform.Yourworkwillbeperiodicallyreviewedthroughclassroomcritiquesandconferenceswiththeinstructor.Theinstructorwillgivedemonstrationsontechniquesandshowexamplesthroughslidesandbooks. HOWTOCHOOSEABRUSH:Threecriteria;1.Thatthebrushholdagoodpointoredgewheninuse,2.Thatthehairhavegood“spring”(thismeansthatoncethebrushhasbeenliftedfromthesurfaceitreturnsimmediatelytoitsoriginalshape),and3.Thebrushconsistentlycontrolstheflowofcolorfromthetip.Thefinesthaircomefromaspeciesofmink–theKolinskySable.Thishairhasextraordinaryspringandformbecauseofnaturallyoccurringscalesaroundtheexteriorthatcontrolflow.Thishairismorecostlythangold!RedsablebrushesaregenerallyfromthehairofweaselsandwillcosthalfthepriceofaKolinsky.Blacksable,brownsable,andsableareoftenhairsfromtheox,dyedtoresemblethetrueredsable.Squirrelhairhasterrificflowcontrolandpointbutnotgoodspring.Sabeline,fromtheox,hasreasonableflowcontrolanddurabilitywithmoderatepointandspring.Ponyhasreasonableflowwithpoorspringandpoint.Camelisnotreallytakenfromcamelbutgenerallypony,ox,orgoat.Nylonstartedbeingusedforbrushesinthemiddleofthetwentiethcentury.Itdoesn’tpointwellandthereislittleornoflowcontrol.Color“dumps”onthesurface.Recentlymanufacturershaveusedpolyesterforsyntheticbrushesandtheyworkmoreconsistentlyforflowthannylon,havegoodpointandspringandgreatdurability–andisaffordable!Syntheticbrushesarenotastastytobugsormothsandareeasiertoclean.Theyholdupbetterthannaturalhair.Theyareexcellentforacrylicpaints.“Taklon”isthetermmostcommonlyusedtonotethistypeofpolyester.
