Merrylands High School

Geolocation game for mobile devices

Players opened the ARIS app on their mobile devices and selected the Merrylands High School game.

The story line of the game appears on their mobile device.

The game has 7 quests. The information and back story for each quest is featured on “plaques”, which show up when the player’s mobile device is at a particular location according their device’s GPS locator.

Alternatively players can scan a plaque’s QR code to activate the quest.

Players have to follow the story and the instructions on the plaque of each quest to locate items.

In the Social Quest, one of the items players have to find is soap. The clue guides students to the girls’ toilets find the soap. Players have to use the game’s map and geolocation locator to find the girls’ toilets.

To get the soap, players have to scan a QR code to receive a picture of the soap and the option to “pick up”.

Another item players have to collect for the Social Quest is toilet paper.

Once again the player has to locate the QR code for the toilet paper according to the story of the quest.

For each item, there is also a short description that relates to the school. In this case, it relates to the school’s positive behaviour for learning program.

This is an example of another item that the player needs to locate the QR code for.

All items the player picks up is dropped into the inventory.

Once all the items for a quest has been picked up, the player needs to scan the QR code for the quest’s guardian. In this case it is the Social Guardian. When a player scans the QR code for the Social Guardian, the guardian asks whether all items have been collected.

If all the items have been collected, the Social Guardian gives the player a badge for the quest.

For the Social Quest, the Social Badge is awarded to the player.

The game has 7 quests. This slideshow only shows the Social Quest.

Students organised the QR codes for each Quest’s guardian to be placed at a central location on the day of the game.

This is a photo of a Year 6 student playing the game.
