Dear Friends
This is our Easter Edition and all the details of our special Easter Services
are on page 3. As usual we have plenty of information about local events
and news from our schools and local parish councils. I was interested to
receive some information about the ‘Restoration of the line of the Pilgrims
Way’ after the opening of Peters Bridge (page 10)
Foremost in my mind as I write, is the beauty of Spring unfolding daily
and the sight and sounds of the birds preparing to nest. The miracle of
Spring always thrills me and being able to start planting seeds and
watching the magic of them growing. Also we can do what we can to
encourage the wildlife by planting the right kind of nectar plants for the
bees and butterflies and secreting away suitable nest boxes for the birds.
For aspiring growers, there is the opportunity to take up an allotment.
(page 13) and as usual, Sue (page 19) gives us seasonal gardening tips.
We know we live in a beautiful part of the country that not only gives us
lovely walks and views but also supports some very special wildlife and
plants. So hopefully there will be good weather over the Easter holidays
for really enjoying the countryside.
We can visit the local wildlife reserves that are managed by Kent Wildlife
Trust who support the special habits. Local reserves:- Bluebell Hill,
Burham Down, Burham Marshes, Holborough Marshes and Nashenden
Meadow. Take a look at: www.kentlifetrust.org.uk/reserves/tyland-barn
where you will find information about their localities, access and the
different species that can be found there. Of course the Kent Wildlife Trust
HQ is very local to us at Sandling and this is a lovely place to visit itself
(and free). They have there a nature park designed to represent the diverse
range of habitats to be found in Kent and run a programme of events and
activities throughout the year for adults and children. So, very largely
because of the work they and, of course, the farmers do locally, we are able
to enjoy beautiful countryside around us with its diverse wildlife.
Wishing you a Very Happy Easter. Mary Davis, Editor

NEW SCHOOL UNDER WAY AT PETERS VILLAGE
Work has started on a new school at Peters Village to serve the new
community there and the nearby village of Wouldham.
The project has been previously described as a ‘win, win’ situation for
Kent County Council (KCC) – as education authority – and the Peters
Village developer, Trenport, which sold the school land for a nominal £1
and injected £4.8 million towards the build.
Trenport Director Chris Hall explained: “We always intended to build a
new school for Peters Village families, but Wouldham primary school’s
head teacher Carl Fitter and the governors instigated an approach to us by
KCC Education about creating an enlarged school to take pupils from
there too; they felt that, without costly refurbishment, the old village
school had reached the end of its useful life.
“We were only too happy to oblige. It meant re-locating our original
Peters Village school site, but this in turn created more space for badly
needed housing development using brownfield land – a win, win
situation.
“However, we must stress that Trenport’s involvement with this project
ended with sale of the land and funding.
“The enlarged project to include Wouldham School is now wholly in the
hands of KCC and its contractor Baxall Construction and, although we
have seen the school design concept, we are currently awaiting the
schedule for its completion from Kent County Council.”
He added that Baxall Construction moved onto the new school site in
early February and has been stripping topsoil and carrying out other
preliminary enabling work. The works will also include diversion of some
overhead power lines underground by UK Power Networks, which will
need to be carried out in advance of the school building work.

PEW RUNNERS FOR ALL SAINTS CHURCH, WOULDHAM
So many people have wished to commemorate the lives of their loved
ones, that the Pew Runner Group are delighted to say that most of the
church pews now have warm comfortable seats! There are now just three
more pew runners needed, still at the price of £170 each. Joining with
other parishioners for one runner means that (£30 as a minimum) the
result can be more affordable. The cost is for materials only. If you wish
to donate one in memory of a loved one or an occasion, please complete
the form below and send to:
Mrs. H. Lloyd, 40 Downs View, Burham, ME1 3RR. Cheques payable to

WINCHESTER HOUSE NURSING HOME, WOULDHAM
During March we celebrated two saints days: St David's day on 1st March
and then the day after St Patrick's day we had a wonderful performance by
The Hackett Kyne School of Irish Dance at our St Patrick's party, along
with a nice glass of Guinness!
Now, there is always something to do in the garden and with the weather
now improving, we have been pruning, tidying, sowing seeds and making
sure our bird baths and feeders are kept topped up to encourage our
feathered friends to come for a visit.
We shall be looking forward to more trips out and about, including a trip
in May aboard the Kingfisher boat which is a purpose built boat that
provides river trips for the disabled and disadvantaged of all ages.
Dates for your diary: 19th April at 11am - Informative Talks, with

BURHAM PRE-SCHOOL
On 19th May 2017 all the staff from
Burham Pre-school will be walking up
Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales,
to raise money to develop the outdoor play
area for the children who attend the Pre-
school. It is essential, that young children
get frequent and regular opportunities to
explore and learn in the outdoor environment and to enable us to do this
in our preschool every day, we need to purchase new equipment and
improve our outside space.
The staff are funding this trip themselves, so 100% of all monies raised
will go to the Preschool. Please support us with your sponsorship. There
are sponsor forms in the reception of Preschool or you can text Tracey on
07920599287 with your donation and she will let you know how to make
payment. You can also donate via our Crowdfunding page (https://

Walking the Pilgrims’ Way:
To Canterbury from Winchester and London.
Leigh Hatts (Cicerone Press)
I have just sent a note to the Churches Conservation Trust to inform them
that St Marys Church, Burham is now in my new book.
With the opening of the Peters Village bridge it has been possible to
‘restore the line of the Pilgrims’ Way. We also suggest walkers go
downstream past Wouldham Church to Rochester Cathedral and back.
Or start at Rochester and walk upstream.
The aim has been to make the guide and Canterbury Cathedral’s Pilgrim
website compatible.
It’s early days but do let me know of any events which can be put on the
website.

PRECEPT
This coming year TMBC have removed certain grants from Parish Councils which
covered maintaining the cemetery, footway lighting and a basic allocation, as a result the
Parish Councils precept has gone up, we were informed that TMBC’s portion would go
down. Unfortunately that has not proved to be the case but Wouldham PC have agreed to
support the cemetery for the next financial year.
VILLAGE HALL BUILD
Sadly the Big Lottery Fund has closed to applications, the Parish Council will be
discussing the way forward for the current village hall, a new village hall, All Saints
school building and the car park. More details will follow.
TRAFFIC SURVEY
Wouldham Parish Council will again be conducting a traffic survey on the High St to
compare the rise in traffic now Hall Rd is open. We will publish the results and are
hoping this will give us good evidence for any requests we make to KCC Highways.
E MAIL ADDRESSES FOR RESIDENTS
The PC have decided that we would like to maintain a list of email addresses of residents
of Wouldham Parish who would be willing to participate in surveys for PC use (e.g.
regarding traffic in the village). A form is included in this parish magazine—opposite.
Those who are not online but would like to participate can register their postal address.

To mark World Book Day, the first week of March saw all children and staff take
part in our 'Inspiring Writing Week', ending with World Book Day itself on 2nd
March. The week began with a mysterious hole appearing in our field, which
could have been made by a rabbit and continued with a visit from the Cheshire
Cat, a Mad Hatter's Tea Party and even a visit from the Queen of Hearts herself.
All the children engaged with our Alice in Wonderland themed week, producing
some great examples of creative writing and on World Book Day itself, staff
dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland, while the children came in
dressed as their own favourite book characters.
Easter is an important time for the Church of England and our school had many
services and events taking place in the run up to the Easter holidays. On 28th
March children and their parents attended the Palm Service in Burham Church,
while on 30th March we welcomed Reverend Mike Hayes into school to lead
children and parents in our Easter Service and Eucharist. On 21st March our Year
2 children attended workshops and a service as part of the MASH (Medway
Anglican School Heads) Lenten Festival at Rochester Cathedral, while our Year 4
and Reception Class children led the school and their parents in Acts of Worship
on the themes of St Patrick's Day and Mother's Day respectively. Family Trust
also came in to run Easter activities for Years 4 and 5.
Our PTFA have been busy with their Race Night that took place on Friday 10th
March. This was a great night and a lot of fun was had by all who attended. It
raised a fantastic £450 for PTFA funds. Our PTFA also opened a Mother's Day
Gift Room on 22nd and 23rd March where all children could choose and
purchase their own reasonably priced gifts for their Mums.
On 8th March, Year 6 went on an educational trip to Down House (the home of
Charles Darwin). All the children found this an enriching and interesting visit.
On the last day of term (Friday 31st March) we invited all children and members
of staff to wear something pink, in exchange for a donation, to raise money for
Breast Cancer Awareness, one of our chosen charities for 2017. There was also
an exciting but noisy visit from Rocksteady Music School which the children
thoroughly enjoyed - as you can imagine!
We would like to wish all of our children and their families a very Happy Easter
and look forward to welcoming them back on Tuesday 18th April for Term 5.

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School School holidays are here again and most of April is spent away from
school as Term 4 finished on Friday 31st March and we don’t return to
school until Wednesday 19th April.
March was hectic yet enjoyable with lots of learning about the Tudors –
we even had Good King Henry come and visit us at the start of last month
as well as KS1 following studies around ‘Big Bad Wolves!’
We took part in art projects, football competitions, netball, hosted a
National chess competition and took part in the training of digital
ambassadors for a number of Year 5 pupils.
We also had out final total for money raised for the NSPCC following
sessions on keeping everyone safe and happy. The school parliament
opted for a big dance-athon in February and this raised a whopping
£2,026 to support the work of the NSPCC with things like the running of
Childline. Thank you to everyone for your help in raising this amazing
sum! We also helped the work of ‘Comic Relief’ through a ‘dress up
silly’ day for ‘Red Nose Day’.
Heron and Robin Class performed their amazing production of ‘Daniel’
towards the end of the term and this was enjoyed by all. Well done to all!
The ‘Friends’ have also been busy with the organisation of a family
Bingo event and Mothers’ Day gifts for the children to buy. This all adds
something to the school beyond the funds raised and so thank you for
supporting these activities. If you can join in with the organisers to help
do even more then please get in touch. There is a form which can be
completed on the ‘Friends’ section of the website.
This month sees new themes of ‘Castles’ and ‘Explorers’ with exciting
visits to Dover Castle starting in the first week. We also have the
Wouldham Marathon taking place on Friday 21st April in the morning and
it will be great to see which team end up victorious!
The new school build has been progressing well and from the end of April
we can expect to see the signs of a ‘real’ building emerging. It should
move along quite quickly providing there are no unforeseen hold ups like
bad weather. This is also the time that we welcome our new children for
September starting and we look forward to meeting those families who
will be new to us. We will be contacting all those offered a place towards
the end of April or beginning of May with information about starting
school so please watch out for it. Finally, may you all have a very happy
Easter! Check out the school website for details of events and activities.

APRIL in your Garden
‘Half the interest of a garden is the constant exercise of the imagination’
Now a fresh gardening season is upon us and the sleeping lawns, beds and
borders have awoken, the general maintenance of the garden needs to factor into
daily, weekly and monthly routines. The lawn is now in growth, and will need
cutting regularly, how often will likely depend on how much time you have and
how precious your lawn is to your garden. One of the simplest and most effective
ways to show the garden off to its best is to neaten the lawn edges – use a half
moon tool to cut and reshape any edges that have softened over the last season, or
failing that trim the edges to neaten the line. Hedges may also need some
attention now too, with early April being an ideal to plant up new hedging plants.
If your existing hedge has becoming a bit gappy or died back in places, think
about replanting with a few small bushes to fill in the spaces. A light prune of
evergreen hedges will also help to neaten the line, but leave any early flowering
bushes such as Forsythia, Viburnum or Ceanothus until after they have finished
flowering in late spring.
Now is also a good time to get into a weekly routine of dead-heading fading
blooms. By now most daffs will have gone over, so snip off the flower head and
add to your compost bin together with lawn or hedge clippings that have also
accumulated. The same applies to pansies, primulas, violas and tulips – remove
fading blooms, but leave the leaves to gather and store energy for next years
display. Don’t forget to mark where your bulbs are before their leaves fade so
they don’t get inadvertently dug up! There are some lovely plant stakes available
now – especially at online suppliers – that can mark where bulbs are buried, but
will also add interest to your borders. April is also a good time to lift and divide
clumps of bulbs that are getting big, snowdrops, bluebells and daffodils can all be
lifted, divided and replanted now and will continue to grow in strength for next
season.
Other jobs to be doing in the garden this month are:
Pot up summer bulbs/corms such as Lilies, Begonia, Dahlia & Gladioli
Keep an eye on garden pests – slugs and snails will already be active, and
aphids will be on the increase as the weather warms up. There are many
effective organic treatments available now that will not affect beneficial
insects, so be mindful in your choice.
Apply Spring Weed & Feed treatments to lawns for strong growth, and
rake to remove any moss or thatch.
Sow herbs such as Parsley, Thyme and Basil – but keep protected on a
sunny windowsill until weather warms up a little.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
A big thank you to those residents that are responsible dog owners and do clear
up after their dogs. Unfortunately, there are still some owners who feel that it is
not necessary. There can be very serious health consequences including infections
to your major organs including brain, liver, lungs and eyes if dog mess is not
cleared. A bag and flag exercise took place mid- March and the results will be
issued in the next magazine. Speed-watch: As you are aware, this scheme was being considered by the Parish
Council. Unfortunately, there was very little interest from residents (we only had three
residents put their name forward to become volunteers) and in light of this, we are
unable to take this forward.
Photographs: We are seeking the assistance of residents who may hold
photographs of the village which would be suitable for us to include on the website.
If you have any photos, old or new and would be happy for them to be considered,
please e-mail them to me with a brief description.
Please remember to report ANY and ALL anti-social behaviour to the Police on 101.
This includes any verbal abuse and threatening behaviour from drivers, which has
recently been bought to our attention. Ideally a quick call or e-mail to the office would
also be appreciated.
Parking reminder: We have received reports of vehicles parking inappropriately
particularly along Rochester Road. Whilst it is appreciated that parking in the village is
sometimes problematic, please ensure that when parking, you do not cause an
obstruction and sight lines are kept clear.
Hall Road/Green Way Wouldham: This was opened late February for all traffic.
It is hope that some of the problems recently experienced in certain areas in
Burham will now decrease.
Cardboard/Paper recycling: All paper and cardboard can be recycled in the large
container at the recycling area even if the container states “no cardboard”. Please
ensure that cardboard boxes are flattened to ensure that we get maximum capacity
in the container (we are charged £25 for each and every uplift). We are looking at replacing the two “Springies” in the children’s play area. Further
details should be available shortly. The parish office will be closed for 5 days from 12
June. The office will re-open on Monday 19 June at 10am.
Fly-Tipping: Fly tipping in the local area (and in fact across the UK) is on the increase.
Any fly tipping which occurs in the village that is reported to the Parish Council is then
forwarded on to TMBC for action. TMBC do have the authority to issue £400 fixed
penalty notices. One has recently been issued for an offence in Burham.
If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss, just give
me a call on my new number 01634 685936, e-mail me on pam@burhampc.co.uk
or come along to the monthly meetings, normally held the last Monday of the
month. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 24 April 2017 – Annual
Meeting of Electors, 7.30 pm The Parish Building, ROCHESTER ROAD,
BURHAM .
