Over the next 5 years, Sg2 projects significant growth in outpatient
visits for breast cancer across the state, while growth in inpatient
discharges varies by county
Source: Sg2, TableauNote: Growth projections based on Sg2 Care family for Breast Cancer
National Trends:
• Inpatient demand for breast cancer services will see relatively modest growth over the forecast period. Although outpatient lumpectomy
plus radiation therapy is highly efficacious for most patients, Sg2 anticipates continued patient demand for mastectomies, including
prophylactic procedures and complex reconstructive surgeries. Medical admissions for breast cancer will decline with better management
of treatment toxicities and improved access to end-of-life care.
• Outpatient growth in breast cancer services will be driven by earlier detection, advanced imaging, chemotherapy and increased care
coordination visits. Demand for screening mammography is expected to grow at a rate slightly below a population-based forecast.
Factors increasing demand for mammography services include increased insurance coverage for women under the age of 65 through
exchanges, Medicare expansion and a decreasing unemployment rate.
