• Put the pictures in the correct order….or the order you think they should go

• Write a short explanation for each step of the process

•It takes Cell A 1 hour to complete its cell cycle and produce two cells. The cell cycle of cell B takes 2 hours. How many more cells would be formed from Cell A than from Cell B in 6 hours?

•Cell Cycle - the life cycle of a cell and how a cell lives

•The cycle begins when the cell is formed and ends when the cell divides.

•Must make a copy of its DNA (DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID)

•DNA is organized into structures called chromosomes

•Each new cell will be an exact copy of the parent cell

•Binary Fission-”splitting into two parts”

•Results in two cells that each contain cell stuff one copy of the circle of DNA

•More complex organisms do not necessarily have more chromosomes

•How many chromosomes do human cells have?

•Homologous chromosomes-pairs that are made up of similar chromosomes

1. Stage one-interphase-the cell grows and copies its organelles and chromosomes

• Chromatids-two copies of the duplicated chromosomes

• Held together in the centomere

2. Mitosis-the process when the chromatids separate

• Ensures each new cell receives a copy of each chromosome

• Divided into four phases

Nuclear membrane dissolves. Chromosomes condense into rod-like structures

The chromosomes line up along the equator of the cell. Homologous chromosomes pair up.

The chromotids separate and move to opposite sides of the cell

The nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes, and the chromosomes unwind. Mitosis is complete

•The division of cytoplasm is called cytokinesis

•Plants reproduce differently

•A Cell Plate-forms in the middle of the cell

•Contains the materials for the new membrane and cell wall

•Meiosis-used to produce the cells animals use for sexual reproduction

•Organisms produce specialized sex cells called Gametes or sex cells

•Gametes contain only half the number of chromosomes found in an organism’s body cells

•Two types of gametes (Sperm cells, male; Egg cells, female)

•Diploid Number-total number of chromosomes present

•Haploid Number-number of chromosomes present in a gamete

•The Process

•Meiosis I-Four stages

•Prophase I, Metaphase I, Anaphase I, Telophase I

•Meiosis II-similar to mitosis

•Chromosomes do not replicate before they begin meiosis II
