DESIGN PROCESS

The design process is the basis for this project, starting with a blank canvas and creating an experience for the education of a wide range of environmental issues. Each element is designed independently: materials, planting, and land form. These three elements are then compiled to create a composite; the composite is then refined to a conceptual master plan.

PRECEDENTS

The artifact, created as inspiration, is based on the the fictional city of Armilla from Italo Clavino’s book Invisible Cities. Armilla is a city with no walls, roofs or floors; only pipes, faucets and water fixtures. These elements inspired the patterns and features of this design sketch for the underside of I-70.

PERSPECTIVE MODEL

This perspective model effectively illustrates the hanging bathtubs on the underside of Interstate-70 adjacent to the Denver Coliseum. The bathtubs are planted with hop vines designed to bring interest and life to this dismal space. The parking stall stripping is extended into the space in a chaotic arrangement to animate the ground plain and circulation. The perspective model was inspired by the work of Thomas Hillier.

MOUNTAIN VISTA PARK

DESIGN PROCESS

Mountain Vista Park is a plan that focuses around grading, cut & fill, programming, and designed experience. The existing landforms are accentuated to provide experience, while the entry road is the organizing element for movement and programming.

URBAN STUDY

URBAN ANALYSIS

The figure-ground study of Bergen, Norway is use as research for an urban design project. Utilized for two types of analysis, a Lynch Study and Growth Study, these tools aid in the understanding of urban spaces: their structure, patterns and growth.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Using the typical form of “book stacks,” a library’s organizational structure, the courtyard exposes the internal workings of the library.

The courtyard “stacks” are seven feet high concrete walls designed to create private desk and grass space while incorporating the internal values of the library. Construction details, grading & dimensioning were completed both by hand and AutoCAD.

EARTHCASTING

Media: Quikrete concrete, soil, wire & cedar planksSize: 24 x 22Date: 9/10Time: 10 hours

The work of Paolo Soleri is the inspiration for this study of earthcasting methods. His work at Cosanti and Arcosanti are phenomenal examples of earthcasting experimentation. Earthcasting is the method of using mounded soil as a form for reinforced concrete structures. Soil is mounded, moistened, compacted and formed to the desired shape. Details and functional elements are carved or mounded onto the form as “negative” elements. The application of rebar and concrete is then possible. Specified rebar grade and its spacing as well as the concrete thickness is established per engineering specs. After the concrete has been applied and allowed to cure, it is then possible to remove the soil to reveal the desired form. This method can be used for constructing bridges, overhangs, planters, benches and almost anything that requires forms and reinforced concrete. The versatility of earthcasting is one of its most valuable assets. Continued experiments in methodology and forms will provide almost limitless design results.

XERIC GARDEN

DESIGN CONCEPT

The xeric forecourt design is a demonstration garden for the various native and adapted plants to the Northern Colorado region. Plants were selected for their low water use, texture and seasonal colors; arranged for optimal site conditions and watering regiment. The final concept provides varied movement and comfortable seating.
