ANNUAL REPORT
The WIZ, June 2014
2013-14
What a Story to Tell!
The 2013-14 Season at Stages Theatre Company celebrated a
milestone! We have been telling stories for 30 years! Founded
in 1984 as Child’s Play Theatre Company, the theatre’s first
season played to 6,000 people and operated on a budget of
around $20,000. Today, Stages Theatre Company serves more
than 130,000 people and operates on a budget of more than
$2 million. We have produced over 100 World Premieres, 194
main stage productions, 50 off-site productions and 12 touring
productions. There was much to CELEBRATE!
Favorite and beloved characters came to life on both our stage
and in our studio theater. From the spectacle of Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse and Llama
Llama Holiday Drama, to the stunning choreography of The Mitten and The WIZ to the
humor of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and The True Story of
the Three Little Pigs, audiences of all ages were engaged and entertained. They ooh’d and
aah’d at the amazing technical elements that kept them on the edge of their seats, with
everything from moving projection to light-up costumes and
scenery. Our intimate studio theatre came alive with 80’s
music, hair and clothes in Sideways Stories from Wayside
School, and the beauty of ancient Chinese tales sprang to
life in Starry River of the Sky.
One of the most memorable moments of the season was
our first, fully produced Theater for the Very Young
production of The Dandelion Seed. Our youngest audience
members, ranging in age from 18 months to three years,
along with their caregivers participated in and helped create
this innovative production. We have been asked time and
again to do more work like this for our “littles.” Rest
assured, we have heard you, and are planning to do much
more work in this exciting genre!
It is impossible to mention every production, every
classroom, every artist, every community touched by the
legacy of Stages Theatre Company. Luckily, we don’t have
to because each step along the way represents a cherished
memory for someone who was there, experiencing the
magic of this amazing organization.
Many thanks go to the steadfast support of the Board of
Directors of STC for helping us celebrate this milestone at
our 30th Anniversary event, which brought back so many
people who had been a part of making memories and steadfast
friendships over the past three decades. Thank you for coming back home this season!
Our 30th Anniversary season was truly a season to remember! However, we cannot sit still
as we have more audiences to entertain, more young actors to challenge, and more adult
artists, parents and educators who trust us with their young people to reach. We thank all of
you for being a part of US for the past 30 years, and we look forward to a lifetime of
memories to come.
Thank you,
Sandy Boren-Barrett
Artistic Director/CEO
