India Habitat Centre
Concept of the Symbol
The India Habitat Centre was conceived to provide a physical environment which would serve as a catalyst for a synergetic relationship between individuals and institutions working in diverse habitat related areas and therefore, maximise their total effectiveness. To facilitate this interaction, the Centre provides a range of facilities.
The symbol has three basic elements. The downward pointing triangle within the male fi gure encircled by the
words “India Habitat Centre”.
The fi gure of the man, developed from a prototype of a rock painting from Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh,
represents the anthropomorphic personifi cation of Shiva, the Creator - Demiurge, as the Divine Archer.
The bow in his left hand has been deleted for purpose of design. The fi gure depicts the phenomenon of the expanding
form, quintessential to the eternal repose, peace and order in the universe.
The downward pointing triangle is a female symbol representing “Shakti”. It is based on “Shri Yantra”, a general term for
instruments of worship which include geometric forms. An amalgamation of the two forms symbolize the creative activity
of the cosmic male and female energies in successive stages of evolution. It is the archetypal marriage represented in abstract form,
a key to the secret of cosmic and universal harmony.
Encircling them is the Universe, shown by the typographical use of the words “India Habitat Centre” placed in a perfect circle.
The symbol in its entirety would represent the aim of the India Habitat Centre to resolve and restore at every level - Environmental and Ecological, a balanced, harmonious and improved way of life.

Theatrescapes by Shobha Deepak Singh26 - 31 March, 2014
Through the camera eye, Shobha captures the moment
of unpredictability in theatre. In a country which has not
witnessed any formal documenter on the Indian theatre,
the visual archive accomplished by Shobha is a rare
work. Shobha’s work does not fall under any conventional
set of rules dictating the trajectory of photographing
theatre. Shobha has been working in the nature of a
visual anthropologist, while re-narrating the history of
Indian theatre. In order to understand a culture, the art of
photography follows an understanding based on empirical
functioning of the sense. Similarly, while moving through
these photographs one can say it creates an aura of poetry
on the artistic legacies of Indian theatre.
New Works by K. G. Subramanyan13 - 25 March, 2014
On the occasion of the artist's 90th birthday The Seagull
Foundation for the Arts presented New Works by

Mela Phulkari: Material Culture of Punjab12 - 24 April, 2014
Mela Phulkari is a concept, a discursive space, where
materials and objects, work as metaphors, allegories and
cultural signifi ers. Not a specifi c space nor a limited space,
it is a continually fl uid moving laboratory where inventions,
innovations, experimentations are being constructed,
analyzed and absorbed. Mela Phulkari which was situated
within the Open Palm Court Gallery Space was a taster
to the vast cuisine of Punjab where many delicious
delicacies are lovingly created in the laboratory created
by Harinder Singh 1469. The material culture of Punjab is
embodied in the intricacies of phulkari.

Exhibition of David Gerstein06 - 15 May, 2014
Bruno Art Group Israel presented Solo Exhibition
of David Gerstein from Israel, Poetics of Memories,
Sculptures. David Gerstein is an outstanding Israeli
as well as internationally renowned artist. He creates
universal, colourful and layered imagery of still-life
compositions, urban landscapes and human activity.
His versatile body of work consists among others of
indoor metal wall sculptures formed as multi-layered
cut-outs, outdoor works, paintings and sculptures. His
art works have been included in major museums and
private collections in Israel and abroad. The range
of circumstances, both artistic and popular, under
which the public has been exposed to Gerstein's
work in the past years, i.e. the statues and cut-outs,
as well as his overfl owing presence, speak of the
community's deep need for this type of creation. The
work of a virtuoso artist, who is neither theoretical
nor topical in the publicist, period-related sense, but
"simply an artist" in the sense of the word.

began as a hobby and grew into a passion, as he deployed
his analytical skills to capture and reproduce the magic of
nature’s sublime beauty, in all its unpredictable forms.
