Letter from Jimmy Dorrell Founder and TxCCDN Board President
We are excited to hold our 7th Annual No Need Among You Conference in
Dallas, Texas, October 5-7, 2016! As the Founder and President of the Board
for Texas Christian Community Development Network (TxCCDN), it so thrilling
to see how this conference has helped grow the network of local and
grassroots organizations and ministries who are working to serve the poor in
our state. If you are not familiar with our organization and how we came about, let me share a little of
our story.
Several years ago, a group of Texas urban leaders felt led by God to help Christians who were trying to
serve the poor and marginalized in the Lone Star State expand their connections, learn how to be more
effective, move their ministries from relief to empowerment-based models, and advocate on behalf of
the voiceless and often ignored “least of these.” After several years of putting on the No Need Among
You Conferences which brought that base of active ministries and interested parties together, the Texas
Christian Community Development Network (TxCCDN) was created in 2013 as a 501(c)3 charitable
organization. Under the banner of TxCCDN, we have continued hosting the annual No Need Among You
Conference and have started coordinating several trainings and networking gatherings across Texas.
While still a young nonprofit, God continues to bless the leadership efforts of our volunteer, regionally-based Board of Directors. We hired our first part-time employee in spring 2015, and the rest of our efforts for the conference and the development of the statewide network depend on the support and generosity of sponsors around the state. The backing from our sponsors allows us to keep the cost of the conference affordable while bringing in expert speakers and practitioners to help in our conference trainings and workshops. On-going support of our organization through memberships and donations helps sustain our operations the rest of the year, enabling us to provide seasoned practitioners in the field of Christian Community Development as consultants, speakers, and facilitators to educate churches and organizations on this approach and to help ministries transitioning their program focus from relief to development and empowerment efforts with the poor and marginalized in Texas.
We are seeking sponsorships from local ministries, corporations, churches, nonprofits, and individuals
who are willing to partner with us and help underwrite the conference. In addition, we need sponsors,
organizations, churches and individuals to become members of TxCCDN. We want to build the largest
network of Texas groups and people who believe in the mission and model of Christian community
development that TxCCDN is all about. Please consider becoming a sponsor for our 2016 No Need Among
You Conference in Dallas, Texas and join our network of people and organizations who are making a
positive impact in the lives of the poor and marginalized all over Texas!
Thank you,
Jimmy

A Snapshot of Poverty in Texas
Texas’s total poverty rate (18%) ranks 38th in the United States.
More than a third of Texans (64.5%) live below 200% of the federal poverty threshold: The 200% federal poverty line is $24,238 for one person; $32,114 for family of two; $37,502 for family of three.
Most Texans living in poverty are U.S. citizens: 82.6% U.S. citizens, 17.4% non-citizens.
The three poorest metropolitan areas in the U.S. are in Texas: McAllen/Edinburg/Mission (34.3%
poverty rate), Brownsville/Harlingen (32.5% poverty rate), and Laredo (31.3% poverty rate).
Children have the highest poverty rate in Texas (25% of children under 18). The poverty rate for
children is 7.5 percentage points higher than the poverty rate of the total Texas population.
The poverty rates of children under 5 in Texas is almost double the rate of adults 18 and older
(27.3% versus 14.8%).
Texas women have a higher poverty rate within every age group, and female-headed households
are over-represented in the Texas poverty statistics: Female-headed households are 21% of all
households in Texas but represent 50% of all Texas households in poverty.
Texas poverty rates are strongly linked to race/ethnicity, with Hispanics being over-represented:
Hispanics make up 38.5% of the Texas population but are 56.1% of the Texas population in
poverty.
In Texas, poverty is strongly linked to level of educational attainment: 29% of those in poverty
have less than a high school education.
Living in poverty is linked to negative health outcomes, including lower birth weight for babies
born into poverty and higher rates of chronic disease including heart disease and diabetes.

2016 Sponsorship Opportunities
Since our outstanding conference in Austin this past October, so many good things have occurred for TxCCDN! We now employ a Statewide Coordinator, we continue to make upgrades to our website and the registration process, our membership has grown, our regional networks are developing, we are conducting a regional spring training on moving a ministry from relief to development, and we have already received confirmation from some nationally known Christian community development practitioners to speak at this year’s conference. In addition, Cliff Temple Baptist Church in Dallas has been working with us to host the 2016 three-day conference and workshop for ministries and churches around Texas who are looking for ways to increase their effectiveness among the poor and marginalized. Last year, twenty-seven non-profit organizations, churches, and universities agreed to underwrite the No Need Among You Conference. Will you join us this year and sponsor our 2016 No Need Among You Conference? Based on the level of sponsorship you choose, your benefits will include one or more of the following:
1. One year’s membership in the TxCCDN (through April, 2017)
2. Free registrations (1-3) to the 2016 No Need Among You Conference

What is TxCCDN?
Texas Christian Community Development Network (TxCCDN) is
a Texas-based network of nonprofits, churches and individuals
who share a passion and commitment to making a difference
for and with the poor and marginalized in their local
communities.
Our Mission:
Based on God’s incarnational love through Jesus Christ, TxCCDN is called to bring healing and hope to disadvantaged
communities, neighborhoods and residents of the Lone Star State by connecting, educating, training and advocating
for the poor and marginalized in Texas.
What We Do:
We CONNECT churches, volunteers, nonprofit practitioners, resourced and under-resourced communities
by bringing them into working relationships with each other for the sake of the least of these and
developing communities.
We learn together and EDUCATE others about the Biblical principles of development and empowerment in
light of the poor and oppressed in Texas, fulfilling our purpose for the Kingdom of God.
10
We TRAIN and equip groups and organizations in mutually beneficial practices that empower the poor to
cycle out of poverty.
We ADVOCATE and work together with others to give voice to the poor and marginalized who are on the
outside of institutional power.
How We Do It:
Our ministry approach is to EMPOWER, WITH LOVE and LISTENING.
EMPOWER: We work in such a way that everyone is given the dignity of responsibility and autonomy.
Rather than dependency, our communities and neighbors achieve a healthy balance of interdependence.
WITH LOVE: We believe you cannot help a person without first loving that person. Bitterness, hate and
distrust do not bring about shalom for our communities. Dr. Martin Luther King said, “Hate cannot drive
out hate; only love can do that.” Jesus said, “They will know you are my disciples by the way you love one
another.”
LISTENING: We believe the first experts on ending economic poverty are those currently experiencing
poverty. We learn from them by listening to them. The relationship building activity of getting to know the
poor leads to love for them as individuals, and it is as important as the informational gathering activity of
listening to those who are poor and developing solutions together that empower them.
TxCCDN Initiatives:
“No Need Among You” Annual Conference: This conference features key note speakers and over 40
workshops, sessions and trainings focused on Christian Community Development. We’ll be in Dallas at Cliff
Temple Baptist Church on October 5-7, 2016. We plan to take the conference to Houston in 2017 and San
Antonio in 2018.
Regional Trainings: Through decades of experience in the trenches, many TxCCDN practitioners have gained
wisdom that is being passed on through organized regional training events. We are holding a regional
training April 5-6, 2016 in Galveston. The focus of the training is how to transition a ministry from a relief-
focus to a development/empowerment focus of ministry.
Networking Lunches: To help local groups get to know others in their area doing Christian community
development, TxCCDN organizes networking lunches and provides a speaker/facilitator for the event.
Information, Referral, Education & Consulting: TxCCDN helps nonprofits and churches locate the
information, resources and guidance they need on Christian community development (CCD). This includes
providing education and instruction on CCD principles, as well as helping programs and ministries transition
from a “relief” to “development/empowerment” model.
