2012 NURS 8020 Advanced Knowledge Translation & Health Care Policy
In collaboration with Drs. Scruby and Cohen, we are developing this course for initial delivery
Winter Term 2013
Research, Scholarly Work and Creative Activities Keywords Health Policy and Services, First Nation People Health, Two-Eyed Seeing and Decolonizing research
principles, Tobacco Control, Health Professional Practice, Ecological Behaviour Approaches, Health
Promotion, Rights-based Discourse, and Quantitative & Qualitative Research Approaches
Interests and Expertise My program of research explores the interplay of health services, delivery, and policy in relation
to population health. Central is the recognition that, in addition to individual-level factors,
societal structures and systems also influence health status and healthcare delivery. Over my
research career there have been two main topics explored. Currently, my research focus is with
First Nation People’s heart health (CIHR funded: 2014-2018; & CIHR and SSHRC funded:
2015-2017), which includes integrating two-eyed seeing and decolonizing methodologies. As
well, for over 10 years I have explored tobacco issues, management, and control in the context of
health care services and policies. Within this research topic, areas explored include: smoke free
grounds policies in acute care settings, management of tobacco dependence within acute care,
tobacco dependence among people living with HIV, youth susceptibility for future smoking, and
health equity and social justice issues. Along the way, I was fortunate to collaborate with a
national group of health researchers exploring organizational capacity to address health equity
within the context of public health; this experience aligned with my overarching program of
research expertise. Since 2014 my primary focus is shifting towards First Nation People’s health.
Finally, when designing studies I commonly integrate a variety of research approaches, so have
considerable experience and expertise with mix-methods approaches.
