Animals && Mathematics?

NO WAY!JaKiya Harris

Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 1st

Summary: The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is to teach students how to add multiple numbers to get one sum.

Learning Objective: Given a word problem with visible images, students will be able to solve the equation using addition with 100% accuracy.

Content Standard: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction

Accomplishment: Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Let Your Minds WonderToday, we are going to take an imaginary field

trip to the zoo. During our field trip, we will solve mathematical word problems using

addition. Earlier in the school year, you learned how to add.

= 6Remember now? Let’s get started!

As soon as we walked into the zoo, we saw 3 tigers. Then we saw 2 precious rabbits. As we went farther, we saw 4 female elephants. How many animals did we see?

BRAVO!You did it !! You solve the problem correctly!

We went into the bird cave and saw lots of different kinds of birds. We saw 7 red birds on a tree, 5 blue birds chirping, and 4 parrots talking. How many birds did we see?

Tyler wanted to go to the aquarium part of the zoo. There we saw 15 fish, 2 whales, and 1 dolphin. How many animals did we see in the aquarium?

As we kept walking, we saw 2 hippos, 3 long snakes, and 3 slow turtles. How many animals do we see now?

We saw 5 monkeys hanging from branches, 3 sheep running wild, and 2 horses relaxing. How many animals did we see?

The last stop was the Bear Cave. We saw 4 panda bears eating, 4 bears sleeps, and 3 bears that terrified us. How many bears did we see in the Bear Cave?

Unfortunately…..The imaginary field trip to the zoo has come to an end, but the skill to add will always be with us!!

Not quite!Try again using the steps I taught you in this tutorial!

Conclusion You will have learned how to add

multiple numbers together to get one sum.

You will also learned how to solve word problems using addition.
