Government City-states had their own forms of government

Athens and Sparta were rival city-states.

• Athens – The Assembly

Approves or rejects proposals

made by the council

– The Council Is made up of 500 citizens chosen

each year by lot. It makes new

policies and laws for the assembly

to discuss.

– Generals Are army commanders. They

carry out the laws the Assembly

approves. Ten are elected by the

citizens every year.

• Sparta – Two Kings

Lead the army in war

– Five Ephors (overseers)

Officials chosen by the Assembly

to supervise government business

– The Gerousia (council)

Plan government policy, are

judges, and pass new laws. Made

up of 28 councilors, all over 60,

plus two kings.

– The Apella (Assembly)

All citizens over 30. Votes (by

shouting) to accept or reject

government plans.

Religion Ancient Greece was polytheistic.
