• Major source of transportation and communication

• Transportation routes often developed along river valleys.

• Escarpments and rapids make some rivers unnavigable

• Provide food and irrigation for crops

• Escarpments- steep cliffs (off sides of plateaus)

• Cataracts- Waterfalls over escarpments
