Facts: Afraid to Grade Several years ago, Ivy Tech received a Lilly Grant to

benefit adjunct instructors. I contributed a six-module Blackboard course entitled Afraid to Grade: Evaluating Student Communication.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

As a result of this learning experience, participants should be able to do the following:

◦ Identify and prioritize common problems that our students have

with oral and written communication.

◦ Reinforce common literacy goals in the classroom.

◦ Emphasize students’ responsibility to use Standard English in all communications involving word usage, basic mechanics, and spelling.

◦ Use rubrics to grade subjective assignments.

◦ Assist students in understanding and avoiding plagiarism.

◦ Encourage students to write and speak well in all their courses and communications.

Please feel free to contact me about any aspect of this course.
