Welcome to the CASI AERO 2017 Conference!
The theme of this year's 63rd renewal of the CASI AERO Conference is “Canada's North: Roles and Opportunities for
Aerospace." This topic is very important for Canadians given the wide variety of activities and issues currently taking
place in, or affecting, Canada’s north – and the special characteristics of this remote, vast, hostile, territorially vital and
environmentally sensitive land.
The AERO’17 plenary program develops some of the overarching issues that concern our activities and responsibilities
in the north of Canada. The Opening Panel addresses a number of roles and opportunities for aerospace. Following the
morning networking break, we focus the discussion on the special role that hybrid airships promise to fill in Canada’s
North. On Wednesday morning, Dr. John Maris will give a keynote lecture revealing his startling conclusions about
what pilots need to understand regarding icing warnings and how to correctly respond to them. Thursday morning
kicks off with a panel discussion on the relationships between industry, academia and government and how funding
can be put in place for collaborative research and development programs. Finally the Turnbull Lecture Luncheon on
Thursday offers a presentation by Jeff Kirdeikis, Principal Engineering Specialist at Bombardier Aerospace who will tell
us about the flight test program he developed for the CSeries aircraft.
In addition to these panels we invite you to two social events that we hope everyone will enjoy. The ‘Celebrating
Women in Aerospace’ Welcome Reception on Tuesday evening will include brief remarks by Niloofar Moradi, an
engineer with Pratt & Whitney Canada, and Robie Samanta Roy, Vice President for Technology and Innovation,
Lockheed Martin Corporation (Bethesda).
The Senior Awards Reception and Gala Dinner on Wednesday evening will feature opening remarks by Reza Moridi,
Ontario’s Minister of Research, Innovation & Science. Dinner will be followed by a celebration of the achievements of
the recipients of four CASI Senior Awards.
It’s a full program – we hope that you will find the content interesting and the networking opportunities valuable. I look
forward to meeting many of you, and wish you all a successful conference.
