High Voltage Coupling Unit

Pre-Locating distances to cable faults are notalways as simple as connecting a TDR (Timedomain Reflectometer) unit to the cable undertest. When the fault resistance is higher than120 ohms the fault can simply not be detectedby any TDR. The AE101 and PCA101combination was developed to fill the gap thatexists above 120 ohms to well within theM ohm range. It will easily detect and displayinformation which can be analyzed by anyonewith TDR waveform analyzing skills.

Principles of Operation

The AE101 is connected in series with anystandard surge generator and faulty cablewhich provides the high voltage energy needed

to temporarily break down high resistancecable faults. When flashover occurs at thefault the AE101 will limit the current flowing andallow the arc to burn for a slightly longerperiod. The AE101 allows the PCA101 to becoupled through suitable filters to the highvoltage high energy pulse. Because burningarc’s are always a low resistance, we can nowuse TDR techniques. A single TDR pulse issuperimposed on top of the HT pulse at thecorrect time. When the pulse arrive at theburning low resistance arc a short circuit isreflected to the TDR. The waveforms are thensimply treated and analyzed as any other TDRwaveform when a short circuit is detected.
