Background

• Established in 1994 as a DOD program.

• TTT is managed by Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES)

TTT Mission

• Assist transitioning Service members to become employed as teachers.

• Assist our Nation’s youth by providing good role models.

• Assist schools by providing teachers in critical subjects (math, science, special education, foreign language, and career-technical) for needy schools.

Program Function

• Network of state and regional offices.• Counseling on pathways for teaching in

targeted states• Referral to state approved teacher

education programs• Assist in finding vacancies for which

participants are eligible• Financial assistance for eligible

participants

In Practice

Troops to Teachers provides the counseling and support that enables America’s veterans to begin a rewarding second career in teaching.

Helps them find K-12 teaching positions and learn how to promote themselves for those vacancies.

• TTT appreciates degree completion programs at regionally accredited institutions.

• TTT appreciates online teacher education programs.

• TTT appreciates teacher education programs that work with inter-state changes of station/moves.

Pathways to Teaching

• Pre-baccalaureate– Traditional teacher education degree

• Post-baccalaureate– Licensure only– Master of Arts in Teaching– Alternative Routes

• GA – GaTAPP• NC – Lateral Entry• SC – PACE / ABCTE / TeacherReady

Vacancies

• Each state functions differently• In NC, a “job sweep” provides those

eligible for employment with current listings in a 6-7 school system geographic area per request

• In SC, provide local listings and contact HR in geographic area to bring attention to application

• In GA, central system like SC

Financial Assistance

• $5,000 for qualifying participants to complete licensing

• $10,000 bonus for teaching in high need schools for three years

• Eligibility is complicated.• (see one page flyer provided)
