Paralegal – Legal Assistant, AA Degree Paralegal – Legal Assistant, Certificate of Achievement Professor Raskin explained that the Legal Assistant AA Degree and Certificate of Achievement had somehow become out of alignment in their core courses and electives. He said that modifications were made to ensure that both the degree and the certificate are identical in terms of core and elective courses, the only difference being the requirement of the Associate Degree GE for the degree. Accepted the modifications to the Legal Assistant AA Degree and Certificate of Achievement.
IV. Language Arts Division
A. Course Banking
ESOL 803, 861, 862, 863, and 864 Jacquie Escobar asked whether these courses should be deleted rather than banked. Co-Chair Windham responded that he had reached out to the division about this issue, but had not yet received a reply. He proposed that the courses be banked to reflect what the memorandum submitted to the committee requested, and if the department decides to delete some or all of the course, another memorandum can be submitted.

1 CRER 116 Deciding on a Major Lavinia Zanassi Fall 2017
Career and Personal Development Professor Lavinia Zanassi presented the modifications to CRER 116, explaining that some of the content included in the course was overlapping with the content in CRER 137. The modifications to the course content have refined the focus to the decision-making process as it pertains to deciding on a major, and decision making in general.
Professor Zanassi added that the course has evolved over the years and said that she feels it will play an important role in the Skyline College Promise.

She added that the course content also includes resume writing techniques, as well as occupational portfolios. Professor Zanassi said that the modifications help the course fit the most recent needs of the marketplace.

Professor Zanassi presented the modifications to CRER 145, explaining that critical thinking and problem solving are two very important skills that employers seek when hiring new employees across almost all industries.

Professor Zanassi explained that the courses proposed for deletion are either no longer offered or were moved under the Counseling subject code where they are a better fit. Ms. Norris consulted with Jacquie Escobar about the deletion of CRER 665, which would result in no Selected Topics courses being developed/offered in Career and Personal Development (CRER). Accepted the deletion of CRER 136, 600, 650, 665SI, 680 and 801.
Jacquie Escobar pulled CRER 665 from the list of deletions. Ms. Norris reminded her that if CRER 665 is to remain in the curriculum as the parent course for CRER Selected Topics, a modified course proposal must be submitted as part of Comprehensive Program Review.

Chemistry Professor Alec Bates presented the modifications to CHEM 210, which he explained were made as part of the Chemistry department’s Comprehensive Program Review.
The prerequisite for CHEM 210 had historically included CHEM

192 as well as MATH 120 or MATH 123. CSM and Cañada decided to drop the CHEM 192 prerequisite in 2008, but Skyline retained it, though it could no longer be Banner prerequisite enforced since all three campuses did not agree. Professor Bates said that Skyline noted a 12% increase in overall student success with CHEM 192 as a prerequisite, while College of San Mateo and Cañada had different results.
Professor Bates asked for the committee’s advice in terms of removing the prerequisite, which the department faculty really don’t want to do.
Vice President of Instruction Aaron McVean said that he encourages us to look at eliminating prerequisites in favor of student access, but understands that it is a double-edged sword.
Co-Chair Windham said the options would be either to change the course number and electronically check the prerequisite, keep the course number and the prerequisite and manually check it, or include it as a recommended preparation, per the modification.
Professor Bates said that, having run supplemental instruction courses with CHEM 210, the students who most need the additional help are often not those enrolled in the supplemental instruction.
Accepted the revised prerequisite for CHEM 210 (MATH 120 or MATH 123 or appropriate placement test score and other measures as appropriate, or equivalent).
Accepted the recommended preparation for CHEM 210 (CHEM 192 or one year of high school college preparatory chemistry, or equivalent).

Network Engineering Technologies Adjunct Professor Walter Hanley presented the modifications to NETX 432. The recommended preparation was removed from this course. It also has been updated to include the name of the certification that we hope for students to be able to complete.
Adjunct Professor Hanley said that NETX 431 was actually never intended to be a recommended preparation. He also said that the correct prerequisite for this class is NETX 430.
Accepted the prerequisite for NETX 432 (NETX 430 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent training or experience.)
