The AbsoluteIT Salary Report provides comprehensive insight into real-time salary and contract rates paid in New Zealand’s ICT industry. It draws on data from the more than 20,500 anonymous entries into the IT Salaries website www.itsalaries.co.nz.

SUMMARY OF KEY FINDINGS

• Thebasemediansalaryhasdecreasedmarginallyby-2%inthepast9monthsdownfrom$76,500to$75,000

• Thetotalvalueofoverallemploymentpackageshasdecreasedby3.1%downfrom$80,000to$77,500

• Therehasbeennochangeintheaveragecontractmedianhourlyrate$80orupperquartilerate$100,howeverthelowerquartilehasincreasedby$5to$55

MARKET SYNOPSIS

Aslight fall inmedianbasesalary ratesover thepast9months reflectsacurrenthiatusinITspendingasnewinitiativesareslowlyrolledoutinthefaceofreducedfunding,pressureonretaininghead-countandelection-yearuncertainty.

Someorganisationsarefocusingonmaintenance,improvementandfine-tuningratherthaninvestinginnewprojectswhichisreflectedasincreasesinremunerationratesforthesetypeofskillsetssought.TherearepocketsofincreasedrecruitmentactivityespeciallyassomeGovernmentagenciesneedextrastafftosupporttheroleoutofnewsystemsandservices.

However,weexpecttoseeagradualriseinrecruitmentactivityfollowingtheelectionandintothenextthreeyearsalongsidecontinuedindustrygrowthandanewroundofpublicsectorinvestmentininfrastructureandplatforms.ThedemandforskilledITtalentwillcontinuetooutstripsupplyoverthisperiod.

Auckland leads New Zealand with high recruitment activity in most IT sectors,especiallyinpermanentemploymentwhichperhapsreflectsamoreconfidentviewoftheeconomyand,inturn,weexpectthiswilladdpressuretoremunerationratesinthecoming6months.

WellingtonhasapreferenceforcontractemploymentasuncertaintycontinueswithGovernmentrealignment.

And,whenitcomestopayparityinNewZealand’sICTsectorthereisstillasignificantgap. Salariedmen earn an average of 7.8%more thanwomenwhile the averagecontracthourlyrateformenis12.5%higherthanwomen.

However,morewomen enjoy flexibleworking hours perhaps indicating employerwillingnesstocaterforneedsaroundworkingmothers.

TheabsoluteITSalaryReportcapturesreal-timecontractandpermanentemployees’remunerationdetailsasenteredintowww.itsalaries.co.nz

Oftheestimated43,000ICTworkersinNewZealand,morethan20,500haveenteredtheirremunerationdetailsanonymouslyintoITSalariessinceSeptember2008.

Onaveragethereare100newsalaryprofilespostedbyNewZealandITprofessionalseachweek.Thesurveyasks15anonymousquestions.Toensureaccuracyandadirectcomparisonagainstindustrypeers,thereareno‘freetext’variablesotherthanwhenconfirmingone’sexactjobtitle.Allotherquestionsareansweredbyselectingfromthemultiplechoicedropdownmenus.

Ofthe20,500plusparticipantsofthesurvey,thereweresevenlevelsofeducation,75 industry groups, and seven types and sizes of current employer. In addition,participantswerealsoaskedtoconfirmtheirgender,numberofyearsexperienceandthenumberofpeopletheymanagedorsupervised.

Of the estimated 43,000 ICT workers in New Zealand, more

than 20,500 have entered their remuneration details

anonymously into IT Salaries since September 2008.
