suburb.

THE TRAM THAT TRIED TO
GO TO CHURCH
In 1922 a tram was passing All Saints’
Anglican Church when the Sunday
evening service was just starting. Dramatically, it left the rails ‘and
dashed towards the entrance’, as a
Mercury reporter described it, amused
at the thought of a tram trying to go to church. Fortunately, it was going
slowly, no one was hurt, and it was
soon put back on the rails to continue
its legitimate journey. [Snippets from
the forthcoming ‘History of South
Hobart’ by Alison Alexander will be
published over the next few months to
whet your appetite for more!]

THANKS ROB!
The SHPA (Inc.) would like to ex-
press its most sincere gratitude to the
Hon. Rob Valentine, MLC for his generous and community-minded
offer to subsidise the printing of A
South Hobart Newsletter each month.
Rob’s commitment to community issues has been a long-term one. Our
longest serving Lord Mayor, he was,
for many years, the President of the
East New Town Progress Association before standing for Council as a
Community Association candidate
member of former Deputy Lord
Mayor, Pru Bonham’s team. (Pru, of course, is a well-respected South
Hobart resident.) The savings will
now enable the Association to redi-
rect these funds to further its aims and objectives, including funding for the
forthcoming book on the history of
South Hobart, which is in the process
of being written by noted author, Alison Alexander and is due for pub-
lication in 2015.

HERITAGE ACT 2013 Residents need to be aware that the
recently proclaimed Historic Cultural
Heritage Amendment Act, 2013 has
introduced amendments which have
the potential to water down the safe-
guards enshrined in the original 1995
Act. For example, HCC Development
Applications in The Mercury no longer indicate whether an application
is one which requires Heritage Tas-
mania approval, nor does the Coun-
cil’s website. Further, the Property Council talked the Upper House into
amending the HCHA Act, 2013 by
dropping the "prudent and economic"
clause with respect for applications for heritage demolitions. What effect
this change will have on heritage
protection in Tasmania is yet to be
determined.
RABBIT DEATHS
The Department of Primary Indus-
tries, Parks, Water and Environment
(DPIPWE) has responded to local residents’ concerns regarding rabbit
deaths in Wellesley Park. It would
appear that the myxomatosis virus is
respons ib l e f or t he dea ths . (Myxomatosis is endemic in the Tas-
manian rabbit population and lies
dormant until conditions are right for
it to emerge. This includes a drop in rabbit antibodies (resistance) over
several generations; it may take up to
ten years for the virus to re-emerge
after a previous outbreak.) Parents are reassured that myxomatosis cannot
be transferred to humans (e.g. by
children patting slow moving or obvi-
ously sick rabbits). Calici virus has not been released in the Park yet, and
DPIPWE and HCC will wait until
next week to see if enough rabbits
have survived to warrant calici re-
lease; the myxomatosis outbreak may
take care of growth of rabbit popula-
tion this summer. Several rabbit car-
casses have been discovered with wounds highly suggestive that they
have been the subject of dog attacks.
DPIPWE advises that it is a breach of
the Animal Welfare Act for dog own-ers to allow their dogs to, in any way,
chase, attack and/or kill rabbits. Un-
der this Act, it is illegal for one ani-mal to be allowed to chase and/or
attack and/or kill another animal.

der owners liable to prosecution
under the Dog Control & Animal
Welfare Acts. The Department ad-vises residents that, once a dog has
killed, instinct kicks in and owners
will find it very hard, and even im-
possible, to exert effective control over their dog/s. DPIPWE staff
advise that it is then a very small
step from killing a rabbit to killing a
bandicoot, possum, wallaby (all protected species) or attacking a
child. South Hobart dog owners
are strongly urged to make sure
their dogs are under effective con-trol at all times, especially when off-
leash.
