A SOUTH HOBART NEWSLETTER
NEXT GENERAL MEETING
The next meeting of the Association
will be a General Meeting to be held
on Wednesday 8thMarch, 2017 at
7:30 pm in the South Hobart Community Hall, 42 D’Arcy Street.
All residents are welcome.
BUSHCARE The next South Hobart Bushcare
Working Bee will be on Sunday 19th
March 2017, meeting at the end of
Wellesley Street, next to the Soccer Club rooms at Wellesley Soccer Oval,
10:00am to 12:30pm. All equipment is

TMAG BUSHFIRE
EXHIBITION At the TMAG now: One Hell of an
Inferno: the 1967 Tasmanian
Bushfires but it closes soon - on
Sunday 19th March. That means it's also your last chance to visit the
Tasmania Fire Service Story Booth,
located in the Central Gallery, to tell
your story of Black Tuesday. Don't miss the moving and fascinating
Exhibition, which shares the stories of
many Tasmanians affected by the
events of February 1967, and also leave your own memories of the day,
which will become part of the 1967
Bushfires Story Map. And if you’re
keen to get more involved with the Museum, why not join one of the
TMAG’s popular membership groups
– the Friends of TMAG or the
TMAGgots – and enjoy even more of what TMAG has to offer.
DANGEROUS
INTERSECTION Residents are advised to exercise due
caution when approaching the
intersect ion of Wellesley and Congress Streets, especially now that
the summer sport season is in full
swing at Wellesley Park. An urgent
problem has arisen as vehicles are being parked right up to the corner to
accommodate the renovat ions
currently underway at 20 Congress
Street. Visibility down Wellesley Street is now nil until your car (or
your body!) is half way across the
intersection. The HCC has been notified by the Association and
suggestions made to trim vegetation
on all corners. A more permanent

BENDIGO BANK Pledge support for a Community Bank®
in South Hobart
Residents will be aware that a local
Steering Committee is working
closely with Bendigo Bank to establish the South Hobart and
Foothills Community Bank® to
benefit South Hobart and
surrounding communities. Their aim is to secure $400,000 worth of
pledges by March 2017 - and they are
now almost three quarters of the way
there. To achieve the goal, the catchment area has been expanded to
include the suburbs in the foothills of
Mt. Wellington. The project has a
new name: Project. This includes West Hobart, Tolman’s Hill, Mt
Nelson, Ferntree, Ridgeway and
Dynnyrne. Please pledge your
support and encourage your friends and family to join you. For more
information or to request a pledge
form, contact Isabelle Crompton (0409 810 360), Margie Jenkin (0403

historic Site yet - one of only a few
complexes designed to house female
convicts in Tasmania? South Hobart residents have free entry to the Site
on production of some form of
identification. (Tours will still cost
but not the entry fee.) Highly recommended.
SHLAC Well folks, it’s taken eight years, but finally we’ll be up and running by
early June! The South Hobart Living
Arts Centre (SHLAC) is a new
community initiative, owned by the community for the community. After
many, many years gestation, the
renovations to the Centre are almost

A SOUTH HOBART NEWSLETTER complete. The beautiful historic building, that was the Macquarie
Street State School, is now looking
for tenants in the Arts and cultural
development fields to become part of
a dynamic community in this new
Arts hub. A Commonwealth
Government grant has been used to
renovate this historic site, bringing it up to 21st Century standards - a
dynamic new arts centre for South
Hobart and, indeed, all of Hobart.
The building has ample car parking, a hall that can be rented by the hour, a
meeting room and various sized
rooms in the main building available
for three year leases. Expressions of
interest must be submitted by 24th
March, 2017. If you are interested,
please organise a site visit and
briefing by ringing Neil Cameron (Project Manager) on 0418 733 551.
Send your Expression of Interest to
southhobartlivingartcentre@gmail.com or

I LOVE HOBART TMAG is partnering with the University of Tasmania (UTAS) to
present a special late night opening
at the Museum on Thursday 2nd
March, 2017. The Welcome to
Hobart evening is designed for the
whole community to welcome new
international students to Hobart, as
well as newcomers to the city, and introduce them to the cultural
attributes of their new home. There
will be a range of activities to enjoy
including live music, gallery tours, games, the Hobart Human Library
and, of course, the chance to enjoy
some fantastic Tasmanian food and
beverages. The event runs from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Entry is free, but
please register your attendance at the
Eventbrite page. [UTAS staff and
students can also register for free transport from the Sandy Bay
Campus and Melville Street
accommodation.]

STATE PLANNING
LEGISLATION DECISION Community groups have reacted with dismay and frustration over
Planning Minister Peter Gutwein’s
approval of the final State Planning
Provisions (SPP) that lock in weakened protection for urban,
environmental and cultural heritage,
reduce the capacity for the public to
engage in planning decisions and threaten to undermine Tasmania’s
unique character and identity. [Go
to the SHPA website’s Recent News
for the full details.]
