WHY ITNs SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH LLINs IN DISASTER RESPONSE PROGRAMS

PermaNet® 2.0

• PermaNet® 2.0 is the latest generation of PermaNet® and represents significant improvements within the PermaNet® technology and production stability.

– PermaNet® 2.0 will as a minimum remain effective for 20 standard washes– The active ingredient in PermaNet® 2.0 is targeted at 55 mg/m2, which guarantees a

minimum loading of 45 mg/m2– PermaNet® 2.0 is available in various colors– PermaNet® 2.0 is the ONLY polyester LLIN; FULLY recommended by WHO

• PermaNet®2.0 is produced under controlled production facilities and is under constant product development.

PermaNet® 2.0 Bednet has a long-lasting killing effect on malaria mosquitoes, as well as other disease-transmitting susceptible vectors.

This WHOPES-recommended LN is made of 100% polyester and is available in various colours, shapes and sizes to accommodate local preferences.

History and DevelopmentHistory and Development

LifeStraw® is a result of Vestergaard Frandsen’s more than a decade long association with The Carter Center, an aid organization set up by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, which runs a program called Global 2000 aimed at eradicating the Guinea worm disease.

One of the major interventions used in this program is a fine mesh ‘household cloth filter’ that is put over a water storage container and through which the water is poured through. The mesh size of this filter is smaller than the Guinea worm; thus water poured through it filters out the Guinea worm larvae.

People, especially children, travelling outside their home were drinking water from external sources, thereby coming in direct contact with the Guinea worm. Significant amount of water was being consumed from unsafe sources outside the home. In order to prevent people from getting infected with Guinea worm while drinking water outside the home, a simple mechanical filter of 125 micron called the ‘Pipe Filter’ was introduced. This plastic pipe with a stainless steel mesh filtered out the Guinea worm larvae from water.

LifeStraw® is an extension to the Pipe filter but it also filters bacteria and parasites from the drinking water.

So far, more than 23 million Pipe Filters have been distributed in African countries such as Sudan, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger,

Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya and Mauritania.

• Offers easy access to clean and safe drinking water away from home

• Filters at least 1000L of contaminated water – supplies an individual with safe drinking water for at least two years or until an irreversible clogging of the membrane occurs

• Removes minimum 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria (>6 Log reduction)

• Removes minimum 99.9% of waterborne protozoan cysts (>3 Log reduction)

• Reduces turbidity by filtering particles of approximately 0.2 microns

• Contains no chemicals

• Has a high flow rate

• All raw materials are US Food and Drug Administration compliant or equivalent

• Requires no electrical power or spare parts for the lifetime of the straw

LongevityLongevity

• Longevity of LifeStraw® was successfully assessed in laboratory conditions (harsher conditions than what is required by the EPA in terms of turbidity and organic matter), up to 1000L.

• Backwash frequency used was once every 5L (corresponds to more or less once per day or once every two days during real use).

• Flow-rates varied as follows in average:– 280mL/min at the beginning– 280mL/min between 10 and 200L– 250mL/min between 200 and 500L– 170mL/min between 500 and 1000L– 200mL/min overall between 0 and 1000L

Microbiological PerformanceMicrobiological Performance

• Antimicrobial efficacy of LifeStraw® was successfully assessed in the same laboratory conditions (EPA 1987 protocol for microbiological water purifiers testing) and showed that LifeStraw® meets the EPA requirements of LOG 6 reduction for bacteria and LOG 3 reduction for protozoan parasites:

Micro-organism LifeStraw® efficacy* EPA requirements*

E. Coli bacteria >7.0 6.0

Cryptosporidium parvum >3.7 3.0

LifeStraw® Family – Results on Longevity

The longevity of the LifeStraw® Family filter has been assessed for a capacity of minimum of 18,000L.

The cleaning frequency was assessed as mentioned below:- Pre-filter cleaning: after every 13 hours approximately- Filter cartridge cleaning: after every 8 hrs approximately- Bucket cleaning: after a week

The longevity trial on the LifeStraw® Family filter shows that the filter capacity lies around 20,000L or more.
