Greg’s Gazette:
We had the pleasure of Kerin Hayden from Youth
Opportunities visiting us again this week with an
update on how the program was going. For those
who do not know Youth Opportunities is a Personal
Leadership Training Program for 15 year old school
students who are disengaged from school. The
causes are varied and can be linked to a
dysfunctional family, bullying (victim or aggressor),
or just being introverted. Our club has supported
this program in the past through events like our quiz
nights and the Reel Event movie night.
Kerin told us how the 10 week program was a real
help to these kids in making some of the most
important decisions of their young lives that will
affect their futures like no other. The program is
currently being run in 25 schools in this state only
which they are looking to increase with the
assistance of Rotary clubs and other similar
organizations, and the schools of course. Our closest
school running this program is Charles Campbell
Secondary School where Past President Ian
Carmen has been to every graduation since its
inception there.
An example of the effectiveness of this program was
Craigmore High School where the retention of
students in year 10 through to year 12 has risen
from 33% to 97% since its introduction there which
is an amazing result. The state average is 92%
retention in schools where this program is run.
Kerin showed us a memory game they run with the
students, where we had to look at all the blue
objects around the room, and then close our eyes
remembering these objects. The trick was when
Kerin asked us to name objects of different colours.
This was an exercise in opening up the mind. Not
easy for anyone I must say, even trying to name the
blue objects in the room (did you say you could
name 9 Mark T??)
The program turns 15 this year and Youth
Opportunities is trying to double their income
from $1.8m to $3.6m, not an easy ask but I am sure
we and other clubs/organizations will do our bit to
try to help them get there.
Visiting Kiwi
We also had the pleasure of the company of visiting
Rotarian Christine Meredith from the Eastern
Hutt Club, New Zealand. Eastern Hutt celebrated
its 50th Anniversary this year. The group shot below
comes from Eastern Hutt’s own website, so don’t
accuse editor Mark T of airbrushing.
I will be absent again next week but Past President
Rita Stirling has volunteered to run the meeting in
my absence, thanks Rita!! See you all again in a
fortnight.

Magill Sunrise members are now enrolled on Roving Lifestyles
Access to the Roving Lifestyles website (http://www.rovinglifestyles.com.au/) has now been
provided to each of the Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise members.
We can now enrol our members and friends - shop - and start to reap the benefits.
A reminder - How it works
Merchants advertise their products or special deals on the Roving Lifestyles website.
Participating Clubs register (done).
Members of the Club are enrolled as ‘Rovers’ (done).
Rovers can log-on to the website and have access to exclusive offers from trusted merchants on
products and services at a fair and sustainable price.
A percentage of each sale is remitted to a nominated Rotary Club or program.
As a member, you may invite your Family or Friends to also enrol and shop for products and
services - meaning more benefits for everyone.
What’s Next?
You should now have received your log-on details and further instructions from Lindsay Davis
(the Magill Sunrise club coordinator).
Log in, reset your password and enter any other details you wish to store.
Check out some of the products already being advertised. Buy if you wish as a percentage of
the purchase price will be donated back to Magill Sunrise (minimum 5%).
Then:
• suggest other merchants, products and services that could be on Roving Lifestyles
• invite family and friends to also become Rovers (and further assist our club).
Why do it?
Magill Sunrise has a special opportunity to help develop this new initiative which aims to make
giving to the community a part of everyday life.
