6 tips for passing your IELTS exam
Tip number 1 : TimePerhaps I should have made this tip no 6 as I can’t stress this strongly enough. Make sure that you leave enough time to prepare for your exam. You need to revise thoroughly in order to be a success. Take into account your work schedule, family life etc. when setting aside time for revision . Opinions vary on the length of time needed but I would recommend studying for around 10 hours a week for up to three months before the exam
You need to be disciplined. You’ll be amazed how quickly time slips away
Tip number 2: Plan
Make a study plan. Think about how much studying, reading and practice exams you will need to do before the exam. Mark on your
calendar what area you will focus on for example: Monday = reading, Tuesday = listening etc.
Tip number 3:Focus on all sections
Make sure you focus your revision on all sections. Some students focus on one section because in the past they have passed one particular section only to go and fail that section in their latest
exam. Make sure revision is spread evenly to cover all sections
Tip number 4 : Use various resourcesAlthough I will not recommend anything in particular I think it is
wise to use various resources. If nothing else you will get an alternative perspective. Resources can include:
• IELTS books• Online forums• Podcasts• Your tutor• BBC website
Tip number 5 : Do not be overconfidentOn the day of the exam try not to be cocky or overconfident. You may have revised thoroughly and done well in your practice tests but be careful that you are observant and attentive to the needs of the exam (especially the written exam). You don’t want to concentrate on one particular question
only to find that you have run out of time to complete the other questions
Tip number 6: Food &Rest
Exam season means high use of energy, so make sure you have enough energy to be able to work for long periods without rest. Make sure you get a good nights sleep before any exam.Don’t eat a heavy meal before an exam as you will feel sluggish as the food digests. Your best bet is high energy foods such as fruit and of course water to keep you hydrated.
