Ch. 3Lesson 1

What is the circulatory

system?

Pulse Activity

• Question-How does activity affect your pulse? • Purpose: To determine how different activities

cause the pulse to change• Hypothesis: I think that some activities will

make your pulse go fast and some activities will make your pulse go slow.

• Materials: stop watch, index and middle fingers, wrist

• Procedure: 1. Find resting pulse rate. 2. Record observations in data chart. 3. Walk in place for 30 seconds. 4. Find pulse rate. 5. Record observations in data chart. 6. Jog in place for 30 seconds. 7. Record observations in data chart. 8. Sit for 30 seconds. 9. Find pulse rate. 10. Record observations

• Conclusion: When you do energetic activities, your pulse rate goes higher. When you are at rest, your pulse rate is lower.

Is our blood Is our blood blue inside blue inside our body?our body?

• Because it lacks oxygen, the waste-rich blood that flows through the veins has a deep red color, almost like maroon.

• Because the walls of the veins are rather thin, the waste-rich blood is visible through the skin on some parts of the body.

• Look at your wrist or hands you can probably see your veins carrying your blood back to your heart.

• Your skin refracts light, though, so that deep red color actually appears a little blue from outside the skin.

They are so thin that blood cells can only pass through them in single file.

Video-The Vessels of the Circulatory System

1. Blood containing wastes & CO2 flows from body right atrium.

2. Right atrium contracts, squeezes blood right ventricle.

3. Right ventricle contracts, pumping blood artery leading lungs.

4. Blood containing oxygen flows in veins from lungs left atrium.

5. Goes to the body thru. the left ventricle

Write a story about how a blood cell travels through the body.

• Your story must include the following:

1. 3 types of blood vessels and their functions

2. 4 components of blood (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets & plasma) and their forms and functions

3. The blood’s path through the body, including the chambers of the heart and the valves
