Who Am I?» Our National Bird is

the Bald Eagle. Thename {bald} didn’tmean that it isactually bald itmeant white. The BaldEagle’s important foodsource are dead ordying fish. BaldEagles were officiallyendangered species in1967 in all areas ofthe United states.Itsays that the baldeagle is on top of thefood chain.Wild baldeagles may live aslong as thirty years.

The Early YearsThe baby bald eagle leaves

its mother at about 12weeks of age. The babybird is called an eaglet.The eaglet is full size at12 weeks of age. The baldeagle could have 1-3eggs. The feathers of anewly hatched eaglet aregrey , and turn darkbrown before they leavethe nest at 12 weeks ofage. The white head andtail feathers do notappear until they areabout 4 to 5 years.

They sometimesfeed on stolen food fromcampsites and picnics, andas well as garbage dumps.They also prey on mammals,like rabbits, hares,raccoons, muskrats, beavers,sea otters, and deer fawns.Preferred avian preyincludes grebes, acids,ducks, gulls, coots, egrets,and geese. Reptiles,amphibians, andcrustaceans. {especiallycrabs} are preyed on whenavailable.
