Meet our new County Youth Coordinator, Megan Henry!
Hello! My name is Megan Henry, and I am the new County Youth Coordinator at Marshall County. I am so excited to be here and cannot wait to get to know you all. I am originally from Indianola, Iowa. I was a very active 4-H and FFA member and I give credit to these organizations for my interest in teaching and working with youth. I was raised a farm outside of Indianola where we grew corn and soybeans and raised purebred Berkshire pigs. I was very involved in showing livestock at the county level, as well as exhibiting many static projects at the county and state level. I graduated from Indianola High School, after that I attended DMACC and transferred to Iowa State University. While at Iowa State I was involved in Sigma Alpha Professional Agricultural Sorority, Agricultural Education Club, as well as being very active in community organizations in Ames, as well as, back home in Warren County. After completing Student Teaching this past fall, I graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Agriculture and Life Sciences Education. I look forward to my career with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and I cannot wait to see where it takes me!

Just a reminder to beef members wanting to exhibit at this year’s winter beef expo. Entries are due Feb. 1st. You can go on line to make your entries.
Reminder about the Photography class we have in the beef department at the fair. Check out the fairbook for all the rules. This is just a friendly reminder that this time of year makes for great beef pictures! Baby calves are being born, a cool/cold morning makes for cool pictures with the dew and frost. Remember divisions for this class are Bottle/Bucket calf exhibitors, Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions. Awards are giving before the selection of the Grand Champion Market Animal. So get those cameras out and get to snapping!
Updated Animal Care & Disclosure Forms (Drug Affidavits)
Due to COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) no longer being required in the U.S., the animal care and disclosure statements (drug affidavits) have been updated for beef, meat goat, sheep, and swine. These affidavits are required for State Fair animals, and many county fairs use these as well. Look for the “Updated 2017” in the upper right corner to be sure you have the current ones. Posted at, www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/livestock/, and www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/statefair/livestock. Keep up to date on 4-H Happenings http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/explore/news

2017 STATE LEVEL NEWS
There were a few changes at the Iowa State Fair level. If you have any questions you can contact
Chelsea or Megan and we can help you. Any additions and changes to our Central Iowa Fair will be
in the next Clover Courier.
New Horse & Dog Identification Rule
For 2017, immediate family members (siblings/step-siblings) can co-identify the same horse(s) or dog(s).
Each dog/horse must still be identified in 4hOnline under each sibling/4-H member
No change in rule that the animal is EITHER identified as 4-H or FFA, not both
Siblings must both be in 4-H to identify the same dog/horse
State Fair (and recommended for county fairs) – the same animal will only be allowed to show in a class
ONCE – for example, a 5th grade 4-H’er cannot show a horse in barrels, and the 8
th grade sibling show
the same horse in barrels; however, the other sibling could show that same horse in pole bending for ex-
ample
Beef
State Fair will be dropping the 3% shrink allowance in calculating average daily gain - the gain calculation
will just simply take fair weight minus beginning weight divided by days on feed
The current ADG requirement of 2.4 for market steers and 2.2 for market heifers will be adjusted down
slightly to reflect the 3% shrink removal. The estimated market steer requirement will be roughly 2.3 or
2.35.
Beef Herdsmanship will continue for 2017
Dairy Goat
State Fair will implement a new rule for 4-H, FFA and Open Class – no horns will be allowed on animals
Dog
Classes are being re-written to better align with American Kennel Club (AKC) rules (this is done and will
be in our 2017 Central Iowa fair book )
Horse
State Fair - adding Miniature Horse Obstacle Driving class; dropping the 2/3 year old Western Pleasure
class
Swine
State Fair – breeding gilts will NOT be allowed to sell on the truck; breeding gilts will all return home and
will be released after their show on Monday

Thank You to all our volunteers!
One of the greatest aspects about the Marshall County 4-H Program is the many volunteers that help provide a quality experience to youth. We are so blessed to have
so many volunteers, long and short term, that assist with various projects. There would not be a Marshall County 4-H Program without the many caring adults willing to
help out in times of need. If you are interested in volunteering please, contact Extension Office for more information.
Thank you,
