Collaborative LearningAssessment

D. D. Millett, RN, BS

What is Collaborative Learning Assessment?

It is a group of individuals that are each required to complete a small part of a larger project or assignment; they work on the project as both

individuals and as a group, together. The group’spurpose is to not only learn from each other, but to be able

to rely on one another as well.In order to complete the

larger and main part of the project successfully, everyone must work as a team. In addition, this team includes the use of socialand digital technology.

Your instructor will be assessing how your group works together as parts of a team and how you each work individually. The instructor will enable your team to use and to better understand how technology can better equip you and your group by providing you with

information you normally would not have access to

find or utilize.

For example, in the Emergency Room, each individual has a known and specific assignment that must be performed in a timely manner and must be completed successfully, or apatient may die. Someone puts in an IV, someone starts the oxygen, draws blood, takes X-rays, gives medicine, et cetera. Every person MUST do their job or the patient may not live. All the while, the doctor or RN may be asking, “Does anyone have any

other more or new ideas?”

Collaborative Learning Assessment?

A group of individuals brought together to complete their parts of the larger picture or project, using modern day technology, and

consequently …saving a life.

Using the Collaborative Learning Assessment, you will a part of a team that will be doing the same thing ~ except for an assessment and a grade. You will work together, utilizing today’s astonishing technology (computer, YouTube, Google, blogs, et cetera), in order to learn how it can assist you and your team.

In school, your group will be provided with a clear objective that the group is to achieve and each individual will then be given a specific assignment as well.

You will create a contract and develop a plan amongst yourselves. All individuals must follow and adhere to the plan and must complete their own assignments, on time, so that the team will benefit as a whole.

There will be a set time for the individual projects to be completed, as well as the main group or team objective.

As students, working collaboratively enables everyone to learn and potentially grow more as a person. This is done by allowing every member of the team, and your instructor, an opportunity to provide input and output on how each member of the team is doing, as well as how the project is progressing.

The opportunity to be a member of something that requires everyone to do their own part and that allows for constructive feedback from your peers and instructor(s) in a safe environment, will prepare you for the world as a nurse.

It is an old, but newly used by our educational systems to offer a unique way of learning.

Collaborative learning will provide you with the skills you will need for the world of nursing…a world trusting and depending on the medical team’s collaboration and every department and team

member fulfilling their obligations. Furthermore, by utilizing the world of technology to aid in our

education, we are propelling the field of nursing forwards in patient care.
