When First South Fi-nancial Credit Union (FS-FCU) found out they won the 2020 BEST BUSINESS Readers’ Choice Award, the entire team was elated. Delynn Byars, Senior Vice President of Marketing, said, “We were all just as-tounded and very proud! It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by your readers and we’re deeply grateful to have been selected.”
Byars said, “We work very hard every day to en-sure we provide outstand-ing products, services and member service. We stand apart because, first, it’s our financial strength and sta-bility as we rank among the top 1% of financial in-
stitutions nationwide for strength and stability by all independent rating agen-cies, and we’re the largest local banking organization in our market based on capital. Next, I think you have to take a look at our member service. Our Net Promoter Score, which is an indication of how likely our members are to recom-mend us to a friend or fam-ily member, rivals that of Apple and USAA, at about 86% out of 100%. Having a score that high comes from our talented staff. Their dedication to ensure that our members expectations are not only met but sur-passed is our secret sauce for sure.
While there is a leader-ship team in place, Byars said, “We consider all of
our staff to be leaders in their own right…we are all in this together. None of us would be successful with-out all of us.”
Customer service is key, according to Byars. She said, “For us, it’s (customer service) everything. We can have the greatest products and services in the world, but if you don’t deliver quality service, the mem-bers will go elsewhere. Ev-eryone here at First South Financial holds to the idea that our members are our first and best priority. They deserve our respect and our finest efforts every day.”
Byars continued, “In ad-dition to our fiscal strength and outstanding service, I think our commitment to having a complete line of financial products and
services stands out to con-sumers. We offer many first mortgages with no points, fees or closing costs, and our guaranteed best rates promise ensures both bor-rowers and depositors they are receiving the best the local market can offer. We have recently upgraded to a cloud-based digital banking platform to give members even more tools and fea-tures to manage their finan-cial lives.”
That’s not to say there hasn’t been taxing times during the current pandem-ic. When asked if FSFCU has experienced challeng-es over the last several months, Byars said, “To say yes might be a bit of an un-derstatement. I’ve managed this organization through Y2K, several major eco-
nomic downturns, but this pandemic really challenged our management team and staff. Fortunately, we had business continuity and other preparedness plans in place, so we adjusted those to fit this situation. We knew we had to do whatever was necessary to protect our members and our staff, so we all worked together to develop prod-ucts, like our emergency loans, along with policies and procedures that allow our members to still con-duct their financial busi-ness at their comfort lev-el. We have and continue to balance convenience and safety. And according to the feedback we receive from our members and our staff, we’re getting that right.”
Being the Best in the
Business comes down to simple things, Byars noted. “It takes vision, dedication, discipline, empathy and passion. And it’s not just the management team or just the staff, it is every single employee that must have it, the desire to ensure that ev-ery transaction, every loan, every phone call, email, etc. delights our members.”
She finished, “We are so very proud to serve Bart-lett, the tenth largest city in the state and the wonderful people who live and work here. We’ll continue to do our best to live up to this tremendous honor.”
First South Financial Credit Union currently has three locations in Bartlett, with 131 employees total and 60 of them are here lo-cally.

Sandra Gallagher, Presi-dent of the Bartlett Histori-cal Society, former Treasur-er of the Bartlett Kiwanis Club; Communications and Public Relations Director and Co-Director of the an-nual Youth Villages Holi-day Heroes event, for-mer Pres-ident; Re-altor with Century 21 Maselle & Associates, Inc., Broker, Certified Residential Spe-cialist, Graduate of Realtors Institute, Life Member of the Memphis Area Associ-ation of Realtors; member of the Leadership Bartlett Alumni Association, and former President…can now add one more title to her re-sume: 2020 Bartlett Express Readers’ Choice Woman of the Year.
When she learned she was voted the prestigious award, Gallagher was over-whelmed. She said, “I am thrilled that someone or some group of readers feel that I deserve such an hon-or. I have always been im-pressed with the winning ladies of this honor and the other Picks of the Year. I
will try to live up to their expectations. In the past I frequently worked on many projects with the Bartlett Area Chamber of Com-merce, twice earning the award of Volunteer of the Year, serving on the Board of Directors for twelve and one half years and serving on the Bartlett Station Com-mission.”
Gallagher wears many hats in the community. She runs the Bartlett Museum and is President of the Bart-lett Historical Society. She said, “Although somewhat time consuming, this po-sition is very fulfilling and gives me the opportunity to learn more about Bartlett myself, while presenting historical artifacts and sav-ing information for geneal-ogy buffs, an opportunity to preserve donations of family heirlooms received from Bartlett residents for future generations, and the camaraderie of the Society and the many visitors to the museum.”
She is very proud of the museum. Gallagher de-tailed, “Our museum was originally a private resi-dence, built in 1871 and in later years was the Bartlett City Jail. The city started to demolish the structure when the jail was moved to anoth-er location, but allowed the
Bartlett Historical Soci-ety to rent the building for $1.00 per year instead. The society is responsible for the interior of the museum and the city maintains the exterior and the grounds. Open Houses are conduct-ed the first and third Sun-days of each month from 2-4 p.m. and the museum is extensively decorated for the Christmas season. Ad-ditional tours are available upon request. Special ex-hibits are open additional days, as well.”
She also added, “The Bartlett Historical Society meets the first Monday of ten months of the year (July and December are skipped) and are always seeking new members.”
As for Gallagher, she has lived and served the com-munity for 50 years. She said she loves it. Her family is also here. Gallagher ex-plained, “I am fortunate in that my daughter, Lisa, who is a hospice nurse, and my son-in-law, John, who is a Psychologist with the VA, live right around the corner from me. My two grand-children are in college, David is a freshman at UT Knoxville and my beautiful granddaughter, Ellen, is a senior at Mississippi Col-lege.”
Gallagher smiled, “I also
have a mischievous Malti-Poo named Harley.”
When asked to summa-rize her feelings on the win,
the Woman of the Year fin-ished with, “I am still be-yond surprised, shocked, and more. Thank you,
thank you, thank you to ev-eryone.”

The 2020 Readers’ Choice Man of the Year is Michael Goldberg, who also raked in two other awards, Best City Employee, as well as Best Fitness Center being Bartlett Recreation Cen-ter where he is the facility manager.
After hearing of the across the board win, Gold-berg said, “I was taken aback and quite shocked. My goal is always to serve
the members of the Bartlett Recreation Center (BRC) and the citizens of this city by working behind the cur-tain. I strive to do every-thing it takes to be success-ful both professionally and personally, while reaching goals that we have set forth.
Addressing the top award, Man of the Year, Goldberg said, “To be named Man of the Year is an honor given to those that volunteer their time to make their home, their workplace and their city a better place. They
give of their time and their talents. When called upon, this person runs towards the fire, not away from it. They put out their hand to help and lend an ear to lis-ten. All these traits qualify so many people that give of themselves and so many deserve to be the Person of the Year. I can only be considered for this due to the group of family, friends and coworkers that I have around me on a daily basis. It is an award that I never imagined receiving.
As for the Best City Em-ployee award, Goldberg said that title belongs to the 10 full-time employees, 65 part-time employees and 35 contract instructors at the BRC. He said, “It takes everyone. I have found that if you identify the right tal-ent and hire the right peo-ple, success will follow. I believe that by serving the people who work for you and giving them all the keys to success, a cohesive team is formed and great goals are accomplished.”
He mentioned that lead-ership is key. He said the City of Bartlett has the very best leaders in Mayor A. Keith McDonald and al-
dermen; Chief Administra-tive Officer Mark Brown, to the heads of all city de-partments. He said, “I am especially struck by the leadership of our mayor. He was successful in leading our city through the Great Recession of 2008 and con-tinues to be at the forefront of battling through the Pan-demic of 2020. His steady and consistent guidance has allowed us to continually
meet the need and exceed the expectations of our cit-izens. I strive to lead with the same constant care and continual precision as May-or McDonald.”
As for the Best Fitness Center award, Goldberg said there have been signif-icant challenges during the pandemic. He explained, “We kept our doors closed at the Bartlett Recreation Center for 55 days during

this pandemic. It hindered our ability to offer in-per-son physical wellness to our members and citizens.” However they found a way. Goldberg continued, “In shifting gears to serve, we provided free virtual group exercise classes and pro-moted small accountability groups with our dedicated group exercise instructors. We also ramped up our media presence to make sure we offered ideas and guidance on how everyone could stay healthy and ac-tive during this time, all at no cost to our members and citizens.”
Personally, Bartlett’s Man of the Year said there is no place he rather be. Goldberg said, “I began to work for the City of Bartlett in 2006
and soon realized that I de-sired to move within the city limits for so many different reasons. The small town feel…the spiritual pres-ence…the community…the vision of the city; all play a part to make it a wonderful place to reside. Bartlett is the place that I met my wife of nine years and where we were married. We gave birth to our daughter here and are excited to have her grow up in Bartlett. This is our home, we attend church in Bartlett, we work in Bartlett and the three of us, along with our two res-cue dogs, will call Bartlett home indefinitely.”
Goldberg furthered, “I would not be who I am, if it not for my wife, Kathleen. As a Doctor of Physical
Therapy here in Bartlett, it is inspiring the way she cares for her patients. She puts so much time and ef-fort into serving and help-ing them on their road to a more active and healthy life. The way she cares for our daughter and for me, allows our family to grow in our faith and our personal and professional lives.”
Smiling, Goldberg fin-ished with, “There are so many deserving members of this city and community who work tirelessly to make this city better. They are truly important to making Bartlett what it is today. To be specifically recognized by our members and citi-zens for each award is both an honor and a humbling experience.”

Winning ten awards in the 2020 Bartlett Express Readers’ Choice contest is no small feat for any one establishment, but the staff at St. Ann Catholic School and Church, handled it by giving all the credit to the community to which they
serve. The school that edu-
cates more than 220 Pre-K through 8th grade students, won Best Preschool, Best Private Elementary School, Best Private Middle School, Best Parent-Teacher-Orga-nization (PTO), Best School Principal: Didier Aur, Best Preschool Director: Lauren Whittenberg, Best Elemen-

educational growth of each student being a top priority. “We are all family, here,” Aur said of the school staff, students and families. “We know and are familiar with everyone here. There are so many legacies here at Saint Ann. We have students here that had grandparents and parents that attended. We really are one family.”
In his 31st year in educa-tion and third year as Saint Ann Principal, Aur recog-nizes how important the role is that he plays at the well-loved school. Others recognize it, too. Saint Ann parent and school Commu-nication Director Angela de Jong said, “We appre-ciate Mr. Aur’s transpar-ency and how he keeps us all informed. We trust him and he has really made a difference. As a parent, we never have to guess what is happening at St. Ann, Mr. Aur updates everyone on a blog.”
Aur is proud of Saint Ann and the environment they have created there. He said,
“It is the culture here, from the parents, to the commu-nity and all of our support-ers, we all work hand-in-hand for the students. Saint Ann has always been a great school, but we have made even greater improvements over the last three years, including adding middle grades to our school system. Most recently we revamped our math department to in-clude Julie Langford, who is dedicated to making our students ready for high school.”
That move must’ve made parents and supporters hap-py, as Langford was voted Best Middle School Teach-er. She is pictured above with her colleague, Kris Miller, who teaches 4th grade and was voted Best Elementary Teacher.
Langford remarked, “Thank you, I am so hon-ored. It means a lot that the parents think enough of me to vote for me two years in a row. But watching my stu-dents learn math on a higher level is more exciting. I love
when they come back from high school and tell me how much easier high school math is because of the les-sons I taught them.”
Miller said, “I am hon-ored to be recognized by the Bartlett community as the Best Elementary Teacher. I am truly blessed to be in the teaching profession and I couldn’t imagine doing any-thing else.”
Lauren Whittenberg was elated when she received the news. She said, “It’s such an honor to be named the Best Preschool Director in Bartlett! It is a privilege to teach children and to have the trust of such won-derful families.”
With Saint Ann coming away with ten awards, one might think pride would shine through, but it was the opposite with the school’s Principal. When asked about how it felt to win so many awards, Aur smiled and replied, “We are so very humbled. We cannot say thank you enough.”

Will Lowes, Director of Strategy at Saint Francis Hospital – Bartlett, knows to win the award for Best Hospital in Bartlett, it takes a community of employees putting patients first. Short-ly after hearing of winning the 2020 Readers’ Choice Best Hospital award, Low-es said, “We are honored and humbled to be selected best hospital by the Bartlett community.”
He continued, “Bartlett is
a close knit community and at Saint Francis Bartlett, were are part of this com-munity. Many members of our staff live in the area, and we try to care for each patient like they are our own family. And while we offer advanced procedures that other facilities may not, we believe it is the personal attention that we strive to give each patient that sets us apart.”
With 650 dedicated staff on board, the hospital is striving to ease the pain felt during a pandemic, figura-
tively and literally. Lowes explained, “Our patients’ experience is at the center of every thing we do. Our patients come to us in some of the most difficult situa-tions they’ve ever experi-enced. Many are frightened and in pain. We are cog-nizant of that, and want to ease their fears and make them comfortable while we provide high quality care. Meeting our patients’ needs, physically, emotionally and spiritually is what makes us a community built on care. As with all healthcare enti-
ties, we were not uncertain what to expect (during the pandemic). In conjunction with other healthcare facili-
ties in the area, we prepared for the worst-case scenario, and that has worked in our favor. We have been able to
pivot quickly and meet the demands on our hospital. Our staff has been absolute-ly amazing, working tire-

lessly and diligently to care for our regularly patient load as well as the Covid-19 cases.”
At the helm, Saint Fran-cis Bartlett has several lead-ers out in front, including, Chris Locke - Chief Exec-utive Officer, Tina Kovacs – Chief Financial Officer, Chris Jenkins - Chief Op-erating Officer, Jacquelyn Whobrey - Chief Nursing Officer, David Schwartz - Chief Medical Officer, Marty Keith - Chief Hu-man Resources Officer, but Lowes said it takes every single employee to make the hospital the success that it is. He said, “We ensure that are colleagues are proper-ly trained to perform their jobs. Each department has
specific duties to fulfill, and together, we all work as a production similar to a sym-phony. Every part is integral for success. From environ-mental services to nursing assistants to registered nurs-es to physical therapist and beyond all have a part to play in the healing process.”
He said Saint Francis Bartlett’s success could be summed up in one word…commitment. He smiled, “Commitment to our com-munity to bring new tech-nologies needed to care for the growing population; commitment to our staff in providing a good work-ing environment; commit-ment to our local economy to provide jobs and tax rev-enue to reinvest in our com-
munity; and commitment to excellence in everything we do to provide the best possi-ble care we can.”
Lowes finished, “The Bartlett community fought to establish us over 16 years, and we are grateful for their continued support. We have certainly seen and felt that support now more than ever through donations of masks, food, signs and words of encouragement to help us through the pandemic. We cannot thank them enough for this support. Meeting the healthcare needs of our community is a privilege we do not take lightly and to be thanked and recognized for the work we do is truly an honor.”
