August 2019
My Brothers,
One down, eleven to go.
The Columbian Year is picking up speed as we grapple
with budgets and event planning. To the former; while the
charity budget seems to be in decent shape, the opera-
tions side of the house has some challenges. Weather was not cooperative
with our Chili Cook-off and Car Show (or is that a Car Show and Chili Cook
-off?), as the brutal heat kept all but the most die-hard car guys and beer
swillers hunkered down in well air-conditioned places.
As a result of Mother Nature being what she is (insert your own adjective),
we are not able to buy much of anything material this year that isn’t physi-
cally part of the hall structure. It will be pretty much paying for utilities and
patching together stuff that breaks. Utilities….we have converted the lights
to LED and put all things on timers that could be. There is nothing else to
be gained there to combat our sizable appetite for electricity. We are look-
ing at the supply side of that equation with thoughts of “going solar.” More
to follow on this topic as feasibility studies are performed.

Thank you to all who attended the Turnover Dinner. A good time was had by
all as we devoured pounds of tri-tip while congratulating Knights of the Year
PGK Jerry Padget and PGK William Martin. Both gentlemen provided exem-
plary support to our outgoing Grand Knight, Robert Smith. We also want to
congratulate PGK Rick Ostrich, wife Betsy and daughter Tracy as our Family
of the Year. They are, quite simply, always there for everything we do. Very
special thanks to our Turnover Chairman, Gene Walinski, who pulled together
yet another great event after misdirection from yours truly.
It was a little surreal for me to take the gavel from my big brother. I will be
looking to him for advice in this new adventure, as I have in just about every
other matter over the past five decades. I love you, Bob. Thanks for always
having my six.
I leave you with thoughts of charity, since in the end that is what we are here
for. A theme from the recent State Convention was the need to get back to
our roots; taking care of our own. That is not to say that we will ignore the
community, but we will first look towards the needs of the widows and children
of our brothers. Equally important is our focus on promoting a culture of life.
We must be resolute in standing up for life at all stages, from conception to
natural death. In our daily lives and at the polling place, we must be like mind-
ed in praying for the conversion of those that would deny anyone this most
fundamental right, and pulling the lever for those whom promote our values.
Vivat Jesus,
Christopher Smith Grand Knight, Council 5803

August Feasts That Preview The Resurrection
The feast of the Transfiguration on August 6, has been thought of as a preview of the resurrection. Jesus, taking with Him Pe-ter, James and John, climbed a mountain. There Jesus was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun and His clothes became white as light. (Mt 17:2) The disciples were giv-en a glimpse of Jesus’ divinity. They heard the Father say, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, listen to Him”. (Mt 17:5) Do we take time out of our busy day to listen to Jesus? Our summers are busy with many things to do: vacationing, water sports, outdoor games, etc. So it is easy to quickly put Jesus out of our minds. The feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is August 15. No biblical vers-es inform us about this event. Based on early Christian tradition, Mary’s Assumption was defined as a dogma by Pope Pius XII in 1950. It’s connection with the resurrec-tion is made clear by the second reading for the day: For just as Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order: Christ the first fruits; then, at His coming, those who belong to Christ; then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to His God and Father, when He has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power. (1Cor 15:22-24) Mary who gave her will to the Father and gave birth to the Son of God, shared in Christ’s victory over death. These two feasts in August can serve as support for our life of faith. Perhaps this sum-mer we can take a little time out of our lives to reflect on these feasts. Vivat Jesus, Deacon Terry

Lazy Days of Summer
Have you ever heard the expression “lazy days of
summer”?
While the hot weather may encourage a slower paced
life, in many ways summer can be the busiest time of
the year. Especially for parents with school-aged chil-
dren. And being busy, it’s easy to forget about such
things as reviewing your life insurance coverage.
The purpose of this column is to encourage you to
meet with me, your Knights of Columbus agent, before the end of the summer.
Whether or not you have life insurance with the order, I’ll be happy to meet
with you and make sure your coverage continues to meet your needs and
goals. If you’ve had any life changes since you last bought a policy (new
home, new child, new job, etc.) chances are your life insurance needs to be
updated. I’ll work with you to make sure you have the coverage you need at a
price you can afford.
Call me to set up an appointment. When we meet you’ll discover that time
spent with me is time well spent. But make the call today. Because summer is
not only busy, it’s also coming to an end.
Fraternally,
Willie Romero FICF

Revisiting: Muscle vs. Fat (Health vs. Disease)
A negative factor of aging is the persistent loss of muscle paired with rising fat content. In a realistic sense, muscle content gives us mobili-ty, strength, speed, agility – the faculties of youth, while increasing fat content proves to be the source of most of the diseases of old age. Cancer risk, heart disease incident and diabetes symptoms all in-crease with our waistline. The most detrimental fat is that which grows within the abdominal cavity. While a certain amount is present in health to cushion our or-gans from impacts and bouncing, once this fat starts to grow with age it becomes an inflammation-ridden stew of immune cells that sig-nal our immune system to progressively attack our tissues in all areas of the body. It is now clear that most of the diseases of aging are manifestations of our immune system turning against us. And while this eventually happens to all of us, it happens far sooner to those with increased abdominal fat. In cultures where people don’t pack on fat as they age, and there are many around the world, death nearly always comes as a result of some contagious infection that the immune system fails to repel, or an accident, rather than the big four – heart disease, cancer, diabetes and dementia – which cripples us slowly, makes us a burden to others and robs us of life’s joys before taking us out. There are viable strategies for maintaining muscle and eliminating excess fat. Indeed, bodybuilders are masters of these strategies, even if taken to extreme, but we can apply the same strategies for the rest of our lives with huge benefit to our quality of life. In fact, the more muscle the body carries, the lower fat content typically moves in response. The reason for this goes beyond the well-known fact that muscle is the primary element of metabolism, and the more you have, the faster you burn calories at rest. Weight training causes micro-damage to muscle fibers, which we heal by redirecting energy (calories) for its repair for 4-5 days, mostly while we are asleep. The fastest way to build muscle is to stress our existing muscles with a stress they have not had recently, feed them enough protein to rebuild, give them time to heal and rebuild stronger than before, and then do it again with a greater stress/load. Weight training is the most rapid and effective way to grow new muscle – nothing works as well! And it works at every age! The most rapid results come from working muscles to temporary failure, and there is a tradeoff between number of repetitions and the weight used. Excessively heavy loads can lead to injuries, tiny loads waste time. My strategy is to use loads vs reps such that the end of a set leaves me panting with a pounding heart. Strategy: Find a well-equipped gym with a staff that can guide you to optimum results, develop a routine that gives consistent progress, and do it for life! Shameless pitch – I happen to work at the most well-equipped gym I ever set foot in, as a specialist in senior fitness, and would love to pass on my experi-ence; see more here –
To your greater fitness and health, in Christ, Frank
