Franz Schubert
Introduction to Music: Schubert
Thursday 14 February Thursday 21 February Thursday 28 February Thursday 7 March
All dates 4.45pm – 6.00pm
Composers are often defined by a genre that seems to most suit their musical character; with Mozart it is opera, Beethoven the symphony, and with Franz Schubert it is song. Schubert was not the first Lieder composer but he arguably made the greatest contribution, and in doing so became a trailblazer for Romanticism.
Join Roy Stratford as we explore Schubert’s experimentation with new and daring harmonies and development of radical and unconventional musical structures. We also explore how Schubert’s music exemplifies Romantic ideas, perhaps the most compelling of which is the idea of the wanderer; in Alfred Brendel’s words, ‘in his larger forms, Schubert is a wanderer. He likes to move at the edge of the precipice, and does so with the assurance of a sleepwalker.’
