Sholom RemembersOscar Steinz”l
A Life of Public Service
2015 Annual Report
Over the course of our lives, we come in contact with people who, on the surface, appear quite
ordinary but are really quite exceptional. If we take time to listen and learn, we find amazing treasures. Sholom is proud to fea-ture Oscar Steinz”l and his family in this 2015 annual report. With the Stein fam-ily’s story, you will learn how to live your life dedicated to the concept of tikkun olam, or “repair the world” by serving your community simply and humbly every day in some small way.
I have been fortunate to have been raised in a family where the importance of serving our community was empha-sized. My mother had a special connec-tion to Sholom and her love for Sholom’s mission is memorialized annually when a recipient of the Susie Selcer Leadership award is selected. Her enthusiasm for Sholom has been passed on to me and as Board President for Sholom, I have the privilege and responsibility of carrying on Sholom’s rich traditions far into the future.
This task is not without its challenges. We are facing increased competition by larger, well-funded organizations, along with smaller companies, vying for as much of the senior market as they can attract. However, Sholom remains the ONLY Jewish-sponsored organization of its kind in the Twin Cities area. Our Jewish traditions become increasingly important as one ages. Honoring these traditions was important to the Stein fam-ily too. The familiarity of these traditions brings a sense of comfort and reassurance
in times of uncertainty. And this brings me to our responsibility: How do we ensure the next 100 years and beyond for Sholom and the seniors we serve?
Over the last year, the Sholom board, in collaboration with leadership staff, has been actively reviewing many state-of-the-art senior care options and concepts to assist us in visualizing what the future of senior care will be for Sholom and our elders.
Currently, Sholom offers a vast menu of programs and services within our accommodations while growing our community-based programs, i.e., meal programs, hospice services, Medicare home care, and our rehabilitation fitness programs throughout the Twin Cities. These activities create value within and for our community as our clients’ needs and wants evolve.
We remain committed to providing the best possible care to our residents and guests, valuing our employees, continuing to grow our financial stability and creat-ing a long lasting, sustainable future for Sholom and the seniors we serve.
We continue to review options to improve the operations and living arrangements on our Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus and some addi-tions to our Shaller Family Sholom East Campus.
While the physical environment in which one resides or recuperates is important, our future success relies heav-ily on our caregivers. In conjunction with the exploration of physical plant upgrades and additions, I’m pleased to announce that Sholom has assembled a strong interdisciplinary team that has begun to study current and futuristic customer ser-vice models for implementation across Sholom. You can read more about this exciting work on page 9 of this report.
The Board and I are committed to Sholom’s mission and we are excited about the future. With your help and working together, we can do our part to repair the world. Let me leave you with a challenge. What small (or big) thing can you do to assist Sholom as it ensures that families like the Steins have a place to go for their senior care needs? My desire is that Sholom’s fine services will be avail-able for at least the next 100 years!
Together we can go from strength to strength.
Chuck Selcer, President

A s I reflect on 2015, serving as Sholom’s Interim CEO, this has been an extraordinary experi-
ence. Certainly, this is a challenging and complicated industry. Simply taking into account myriad regulations, reimburse-ment challenges and changes in the health care industry as a whole, resultingfrom the implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act, can make one’s head spin! Given all those factors, while an enor-mous part of navigating my role, it was also a recent, personal experience that has guided my work as the interim CEO for Sholom. My family needed to move my dad (in his frail condition), to bring him closer to family and begin hospice care ser-vices. It was a very difficult time for us, but through it, I learned the true value of wonderful caregivers who dedicate their careers to working with the elderly. Their empathy and kindness was remarkable. They didn’t just care for my dad, they cared for my entire family. For that, I’m truly grateful and inspired. What inspired me? Simply put, the people. And that’s where it all begins. Sholom needs to be positioned to attract, recruit, hire and retain the right people doing the right things. How do we get there? In a competitive environment, we have been working hard to make strides in this area.
Here are the highlights:
Quality Care and People:They Go Together
My recent, personal experience with lov-ing caregivers drives my passion in this area. Sholom has implemented action plans to: • Find the right people who have “hearts” for senior care and believe in Sholom’s mission by revamping the recruitment and onboarding process • Activate the Quality Care Committee as led by Margie Solomon along with industry and staff professionals • Provide a variety of career paths for our staff through the Sholom Healthcare
Academy with the addition of a licensed practical nursing certification (LPN). Concurrently, we have worked to strengthen partnerships with area health-care providers, worked closely with the Sholom Foundation to develop donor relationships as well as working with various teams to review renovations and additions to both the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus and the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus. And last, but not least, the past year also provided Sholom a financial gain for 2016 with the recent legislative action to increase the state Medicaid reimburse-ment rate. As you can see, every operation at Sholom revolves around people—the right people, doing the right things every day—whether producing a financial state-ment, chatting with a potential employee at a job fair, or encouraging a senior to do one more exercise. People make the difference. It has been my pleasure to work with you and the professional staff on all these important initiatives. Thank you for your support on this journey of creating the future for Sholom.

Oscar Stein and his best friend, David Salton, stood on the corner of Lexington and University in St. Paul. “Extra, extra!” they shouted into the crowds.
People careened in and out of the theaters and saloons on a busy Saturday night in the mid-1930’s. Oscar was young, but not afraid of hard work. He and David were smart. They had learned to sell their Sunday morning papers eight hours early, before the streets were flooded with newspapers in the morning. This way, their sales were much higher. It was this ambition and work ethic that would mark the rest of Oscar’s life as a hardworking public servant and family man.
Oscar Stein was born in St. Paul on January 21, 1926. Growing up in a Yiddish-speaking home, he didn’t learn to speak English until he was old enough to attend school. Oscar’s father worked for Brown and Bigelow in St. Paul and his mother was a hard work-ing homemaker who, Oscar remembers, cooked and washed the floors every Friday afternoon in preparation for the Sabbath.
When Oscar was old enough, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and trained near San Diego until he was injured during training. He was then sent to cooks and bakers school where he became a cook. He was deployed to a troopship in the Pacific and later stationed in Okinawa.
Meanwhile, Lynette Longman was working in her uncle’s dress shop in St. Paul. Lynette was single and asked a classmate of hers to “fix her up with somebody.” Lynette’s friend gave her Oscar’s address.
Lynette wrote to Oscar saying that she wished him well and that he’d be safe. A short time later, she received a reply. As their correspondence became more frequent, their romance blossomed.
On December 17, 2015, Sholom bid farewell to one of our honored residents, Oscar Stein,
of blessed memory. We had the chance to sit down with him earlier in November and learn
about his fascinating life of service. Oscar was a respectable man who served his country,
his community and his family. He will be missed by all of us who knew and loved him.
5
One day, Oscar returned home to St. Paul on a sur-prise visit and walked into the dress shop where Lynette was working, wearing his uniform. She was so startled. He took her to lunch at a department store and Lynette couldn’t believe how handsome he was.
After the war, they dated for four months before Oscar took Lynette to a restaurant in West St. Paul, pulled out a ring, and told her that he would do his very best to provide for her and make her happy. On November 10, 1946, they were married at the old Temple of Aaron.
Oscar and Lynette had four children: Kerry, Susan, Joy and Steve, and raised their family in St. Paul near Macalester College. Oscar worked very hard to provide for his family. He worked various jobs and eventually went to work for the U.S. Postal Service and remained there for 20 years. Lynette also worked for the public schools in management for 22 years.
Oscar was very involved in his children’s lives and volunteered as a leader in Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and coached football when they were young. He also served as president of the St. Anthony Park Neighborhood Group. He remembers when a production company was filming a Helen Hayes movie and he was cast as an extra. His car had a “speaking part” when he got to honk the horn.
Oscar and Lynette lived in their lifelong home until recent health failings made it impossible for Oscar to remain there. After multiple trips to the hospital, rehab and home again, it became clear that long-term care was needed.
Oscar settled at Shaller Family Sholom East Campus in St. Paul. He enjoyed attending services, participating in piano concerts, frequent visits from his children and daily visits from Lynette. Additionally, he couldn’t say
enough good things about his physical therapist. “He’s gotten me stronger and I like him,” Oscar
remarked. “The exercises I do are getting harder as I get older, but I’m happy I am able to do them. I do them to my utmost. It’s not as easy as I thought it would be, but I want to do it.”
“We were very pleased that he was at Sholom,” Oscar’s son, Steve Stein, M.D., stated. “A Jewish connec-tion had always been very important to him and this helped serve that purpose.”
Steve also expressed praise and gratitude for those who worked with Oscar. “The staff were very respon-sive and helpful. The nursing staff served as useful liai-sons with the medical staff as we adjusted medications. The facility itself is very clean and cheerful. We knew that making a transition of this type would be very dif-ficult for both Oscar and Lynette. I think we have all been pleased with how well that transition occurred at Sholom.”
When we spoke with Oscar and Lynette, they still remembered the love which brought them together 69
Jewish blessing....
6
years ago and maintained their sense of humor. “She brings (the memories) out in me. I told her
all these things I did, as I did them, and she kept them in her mind,” Oscar had said fondly of Lynette.
Oscar Stein’s life was marked by hard work, faith, and love for his family. He served his country dur-ing the World War II and when he returned stateside, he and Lynette didn’t stop serving their community with their volunteer work and public service. Sholom is proud to have offered him a home that supported and upheld the Jewish beliefs and traditions that he held dear and to have given comfort, therapy, and care to someone who gave so much to his country and community.
We were very pleased that
he was at Sholom.... The staff
were very responsive and
helpful. The facility itself is
very clean and cheerful.

The Sholom Auxiliary supports the ‘extras’ at Sholom that make our residents, tenants, and clients feel comfortably at home.
The Sholom Auxiliary was originally established to support the residents of the original Sholom Home in St. Paul. Years later, the main focus of the Sholom Auxiliary has not changed—nor has the commitment of the Auxiliary members to the elders that Sholom serves.
Today, the Auxiliary serves three main purposes: Fundraising, Programming, and Volunteerism. Through the Food For Your Soul signature event, other special events, the sale of knishes and cookbooks, programming for members that includes luncheons, the Woman of Valor award, a Purim Parade for residents, plus a plethora of volunteer opportunities inside the two Sholom campuses and throughout the com-munity, the Auxiliary makes a differ-ence to Sholom residents, working to bring them all the comforts of home.

As the silver tsunami of boomers continues to grow, so do their expectations. No longer will people settle for the average—for simple,
ordinary services. They are looking for experiences, extraordinary experiences…the kinds which previous generations did not desire or require.
Sholom not only recognizes there is a need for physical plant updates and upgrades, but also there is a tremendous need for revitalization in how Sholom delivers care services. While Sholom explores impor-tant physical plant renovations and additions to each campus, tangentially we will also explore new meth-ods of customer service delivery.
A cross section of Sholom employees was assem-bled in November 2015. These individuals of various disciplines and strengths have begun studying new ideas and models. This team, named the “Catalysts,” has the goal to take the “best of the best” from their research to develop Sholom’s own unique customer service standards of the future.
There are plenty of new technologies, clever con-cepts and even trends that could help Sholom offer better service to consumers. But, the fundamentals of great service remain the same. It’s about the feeling of being recognized, listened to, valued and cared for.
As of this writing, we don’t exactly know what the future will look like, but we do know that everyone is looking for a friendly, helpful customer service experi-ence. Essentially, when it comes to customer service, it’s not about what consumers think. Great service is about feelings.
Ultimately, trends are only a means to an end. We hope to be able to begin delighting, surprising, and serving consumers in new ways that they want to be served. Join us in encouraging the Catalysts in their important work.
According to the National Institute on Aging, the U.S. population aged 65 and
over will double in size within the next 25 years. By 2030, almost one in five
Americans—about 72 million people—will be over age 65.
From now to the year 2030, Minnesota
will be aging like never before. The
baby boomers—1.5 million strong in
Minnesota—will lead the way.
