Presidents Message
On behalf of the Alberta Angus Association I am pleased to bring you this message. What an interesting time we are experiencing in the industry. Coming off of a phenomenal fall that saw record prices experienced in our industry in both the feeder and replacement markets to a extremely positive upswing in value on breeding stock in the form of bulls marketed this spring. To the commercial producer reading this; thank you. Thank you for continuing to put your faith in our breed and in the breeders that continue to strive to produce you top end genetics that accelerate your program and add value to your calf crops. Thank you for supporting the breed and what it represents and the many merits that it offers to the genetic advancement of the Canadian Cattle herd. I would like to congratulate and thank the National Association Board and Staff on the work they put into the Convention. It was a great networking experience with the opportunity to gather a lot
of knowledge and insight of the direction the CAA is going. There are many exciting things that are taking place on the National level and we look forward to the future. Our AAA Board has had a successful spring with a few of our initiatives coming to fruition. Our t-shirt donation to every 4-Her in Alberta that has exhibited a project calf in the 2014-15 4-H year was very successful with a lot of positive reviews and comments from members. We feel this initiative gives the breed great exposure as we are represented at every 4-H banquet across the province and we are able to interact directly with the folks that are using Angus genetics as well as the future of the industry in the youth that are using those genetics as projects. Congratulations on the finish of your project year and thank you for the continued support of the breed. Our summer as a board has seen our attendance at many different events, one being the Northern Alberta Angus Clubs Summer tour. We would like to thank the club for their great hospitality and would also like to Congratulate DCM Pohl Partnership of Wetaskiwin on being our Commercial Breeders of the Year! The Southern Alberta Angus Associations tour was held the weekend of August 8th and was a great event for further Angus fellowship. Our AGM was held once again this year in Bashaw on August 11. It was a great event that allows the membership the opportunity for further face to face contact with your board and for year in review presentations of our activities. This year was a special year as it was the 40th Annual Alberta Junior Angus Association Show and we inducted in the Breed Builder Category of the Alberta Angus Hall of Fame the Founding Committee of the show. A group of remarkable folks that had a great amount of foresight to organize a show that has affected so many of us in so many different ways. Presentations were also awarded to our Purebred Breeders of the Year the Glessman Family of Glesbar Cattle Co., an operation that is full of dedication and support of the breed and breeders from our organization. Congratulations to you all. The forecast for fall continues to look bright for the strength of the breed and the industry. If you have any questions of your board or if you have any ideas that we can implement to further support or accelerate our members please do not hesitate to contact any member of the board anytime. Greg Pugh AAA President
2015 Alberta Commercial Breeder of the Year
AAA Board Members Doug Domolewski and Georgina Smith along with CAA Ceo Rob Smith
presenting the Pohl Family with Commercial Breeder of the Year
Alberta Angus Commercial Breeder of the Year was presented to DCM Pohl Partnership who is a 4th generation of the Pohl family with the 5th generation is busy learning about farming from dad and granddad. The Pohl family has been farming in the Wetaskawin area since 1927. It has evolved from a mixed farm of originally grain and purebred Hereford cattle. Over the years they have farmed horses, pigs and dairy cattle. Today the farm consists of a mixed grain of oilseed pulses and cereal grain along with a cow/calf herd and back rounding feedlot.
They still farm the land that was owned by the first generation, and have added more land over the years. DCM Pohl Partnership also custom feed around 100 head per year and currently calve out 250 Simmental Angus cross cattle. They strive to produce a medium framed animal with enough Angus influence to give that great finishing ability. They try to take our calves to 800-900 lbs with not too much fleshiness, so that when they go to the finishing feedlot; they preform very well. Maternal instincts that the Angus provides along with vigorous calves during calving are qualities that they love about the breed. They have been extremely happy with the Angus bulls they have purchased over the past few years, which have worked very well to help them achieve these goals.

AAA President Greg Pugh presenting Glesbar Cattle Co. – Glen, Darlene and Kurt Glessman, Cody, Amy, Lincoln & Avery Miller of Barrhead, AB with the ‘Ed Boake Memorial’ Purebred Breeder of the Year Award
Glesbar Cattle Co….
... The Glesbar Herdname has been raising and registering seedstock for 60 plus years.
…The first 30 years were primarily all Horned Hereford, the last 30 have been all about Angus, the bulk of them being Red Angus with about 15 to 20 percent Black females.
…Our Angus cows have been the major source of income for our entire married lives. We have based our cow herd on raising the best mother cows we could, over the years we very rarely parted with our best females, we very rarely parted with any females, usually just culling off the bottom. In 2015 we calved 150 females, 135 of them being registered Red and Black Angus.
…We have stepped into the show ring on occasion, we have had some awesome accomplishments and made wonderful lifelong friends and successful partnerships.
…Elite Sire, Red Roselea Beau 142D won 2 National Championships, 1995/1996.
…Red Northline Fat Tony 604U was Denver Champion in 2011.
…Red DMM Glesbar Barndance 35X is 2012’s Alberta Supreme Champion Bull, he was also in the Alberta Supreme Champion Show ring at the side of his dam Red Glesbar Leah 29U, in 2010 and voted into the top five.
…Our family is totally honored to be selected by our peers for this award it was completely unexpected, which has made it so much sweeter.
…From All of Us at Glesbar, Thank you so much for the honor of this Award.

2005 AAA Honorary President
Brian & Kim Geis being presented the AAA Honorary President for 2015 by CAA President Corinne Gibson & AAA President Greg Pugh at the CAA Convention in June
Alberta Angus Association Hall of Fame In order to recognize those individuals and breeding units that have made significant contributions to the Angus fraternity and industry, the AAA Is proud to announce the fourth year of the Alberta Hall of Fame.
Each year, between two and three Contemporary Angus Breeders and Angus Breed Builders are inducted to the Hall of Fame at a ceremony in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting. These two selection categories are defined as follows:
Contemporary Angus Breeders
This group is currently active and breeding/promoting Angus cattle in Alberta, and has been doing so under their current name or breeding operation/unit for a minimum of 25 years as determined by CAA records. They must have maintained membership in the AAA for the majority of their years as an Angus operator, including membership for the past five (5) years consecutively.
Angus Breed Builders
This group is made up of twofold Angus stakeholders:
1) Those individuals, groups or families who have had tremendous impact on the growth, promotion and development of Angus cattle in Alberta, but have not necessarily ever been an active breeder themselves. Examples of this type of inductee would be magazine publishers, sales managers, breed employees, stud stations.
2) Those individuals, groups, businesses or breeding operations/units that made a truly significant contribution to the breed and Association while they were active, even though they are not now and maybe have not been for some time.
The Contemporary Angus Breeder(s) and the Angus Breed Builder(s) will be honoured each year at the AAA Hall of Fame Gala & Awards. Final inductees will be determined by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee. There are never more than three inductees each year. The Selection Committee is not comprised of Angus breeders, but external industry stakeholders who determine the Hall of Fame worthiness of the applications put forward on behalf of the nominees. Subsequently, completeness and quality of the application is very important.
Nominations will be accepted from the general membership until December 31. Please submit all nominations to the AAA Office. Nominations must include all information found on the next page.

June 2015 CAA Board Meeting Highlights Please consider the following list of key outcomes from the Canadian Angus Association’s Board of Directors Meeting held in June:
1) Quebec City was approved as the location of the 2016 National CAA Convention, hosted by the Quebec Angus Association.
2) The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF) in Toronto was approved as the 2016 National Gold Show to be organized by the Ontario Angus Association.
3) Board ENDS Policy E-2: Breed Purity was changed to now be titled ENDS Policy E-2: Breed Integrity.
4) The DNA Parentage Verification Rule which currently reads “All Sires used for breeding born on or after January 1st , 2016, must have a DNA parentage profile on record with the Canadian Angus Association showing parent verification before their offspring can be registered” will be changed to read “All sires used for breeding must have a DNA parentage profile on record with the Canadian Angus Association showing sire verification before their offspring can be registered.” A.I. Sire requirements will remain the same. Essentially, this Board choice means that the rule will no longer change.
5) To reflect a better balance of combining east and west, smaller and larger member populations as well as member activity, and to ensure we avoid two in a row of these considerations, Policy EL-11: Meetings and Shows was changed to approve the following National Convention hosting schedule:
…The rotation for hosting the Canadian Angus Association Convention is: Canadian Angus Association (2015, 2023, 2031, 2039, 2047, 2055); Quebec (2016, 2024, 2032, 2040, 2048, 2056); Manitoba (2017, 2025, 2033, 2041, 2049, 2057); British Columbia (2018, 2026, 2034, 2042, 2050, 2058); Alberta (2019, 2027, 2035, 2043, 2051, 2059); Maritimes (2020 (NB), 2028 (PEI), 2036 (NS), 2044 (NB), 2052 (PEI), 2060 (NS)); Saskatchewan (2021, 2029, 2037, 2045, 2053, 2061); Ontario (2022, 2030, 2038, 2046, 2054, 2062).
6) In total, six (6) Board Policies were modified (1 x ENDS; 2 x Executive Limitations; 3 x Governance Process) in one form or another, with varying degrees of impact.
7) Retroactive to January 1st, 2015, Transaction Fees from dedicated Junior member work orders will be re-allocated as a donation to the Canadian Angus Foundation, designated specifically for Canadian Junior Angus Association activities. This transaction will take place once each year, upon the December 31st calculation of the total number of accrued Transaction Fees within the prior calendar year.
8) Both Alberta and Saskatchewan will need to select nominees to stand for election to the Board of Directors in the coming 2015-16 year to commence or continue their Board term at the 2016 National Convention. Corinne Gibson (SK) and Bob Hahn (AB) are each in the final year of their initial term and must stand for re-election in 2016 in order to qualify for their next term. The Alberta Angus Association Annual General Meeting is in August, 2015, so that is when they will determine their official candidate slate, while Saskatchewan will follow suit in January, 2016.
9) The Board welcomed Saskatchewan’s election of Dave Johnson and Tracey Willms as their elected representatives to the CAA Board of Directors for the 2015-18 period. Congratulations are extended to Tracey and Dave on achievement of their first three year Canadian Angus Association Board term.
10) The Canadian Angus Foundation Board of Directors for the 2015-16 year was approved: Chair: Sylvia Jackson; David Bolduc; Jim Colodey; Vice Chair: Cecilie Fleming; Cassie Dorran; Erika Easton; Treasurer: Rob Smith; Jacci Latimer; Jon Fox; Tracey Willms; Jane Halford; Tammi Ribey; Shawn Birmingham; Kirk Wildman.
11) Substantial feedback was provided to the CEO, not as direction, but as information and advice, on subjects ranging from National Convention to the Joint Working Session to the “Building the Legacy” fundraiser auction.
12) Annual performance review of the CEO was performed by President and President Elect.
13) Tammi Ribey was unanimously elevated to the position of President, moving Corinne Gibson into the position of Past President. David Sibbald was declared President Elect.
14) Next meeting dates of the Canadian Angus Association Board of Directors are as follows: Sunday, September 27th to Tuesday, September 29th, 2016 – Fall Meeting; Sunday, January 24th to Tuesday, January 26th, 2015 – Winter Meeting; Tuesday, June 7 th to Sunday, June 12th, 2015 – Convention Meeting.
Canadian Junior Angus Ambassadors Travel South to PalermoFrom July 24th to
August 2nd, the three
most recent Canadian
Junior Angus
Ambassadors, Chad
Lorenz, Matt Bates
and Patrick Holland
travelled to Buenos
Aires, Argentina to
experience La
Exposicion Rural 2015
in Palermo. We all met
up at Toronto Pearson
Airport and flew
together on a direct
flight to Buenos Aires.
We arrived in Buenos Aires in the afternoon on Saturday
July 25th, after a short stop in Santiago, Chile. To our
surprise on arrival we found out that our bags were taken
off the plane earlier in Chile, so it would be another full
day before we received our belongings in Argentina.
Mariano Etcheverry picked us up from the airport, and
toured us around for the entire trip. Mariano has worked
in the beef industry for most of his life, at one time
working for Alta genetics. During his employment with
Alta, he made several trips to Canada to take in shows
such as Canadian Western Agribition, and during this
time he met many Canadian breeders and became fluent
in English. Mariano was critical to the success of our trip
since the three of us were not fluent in Spanish, and
many of the breeders we visited with were not able to
speak English.
On Saturday afternoon, we had a brief driving tour of the
city, and then had an excellent Pizza supper followed by
a quick tour down at the exhibition grounds. We were
lucky that our hotel was within walking distance of the
grounds, so we weren’t relying on Mariano to drive us to
and from the grounds each day. There were just shy of
1,000 head of cattle on the exhibition grounds for the
show this year. We were told this was slightly down in
numbers from other years, mainly influenced by the lack
of support for agriculture form their government.
On Sunday morning we drove out of the city to Casamu
Angus, home of the Sackmann family. Carlos and Juan
toured us through their many pastures which were home
to over 1,000 registered Angus cows. They took a lot of
pride in the care of their animals and had very detailed
breeding records. Most of their breeding decisions were
made based on the Expected Breeding Value’s (EBV’s)
for each animal with some emphasis on phenotype as
well. Since it was wintertime in Argentina, their pastures
were not overly lush; however, the cattle still seemed to
be doing very well. The majority of their cows would
begin calving within the next few weeks for spring
calving, with another portion of their herd on a Fall
calving program. After we went through the cows, we
had a tour of their very large group of heifers as well as
their pen of around 120 bulls that would sell at their sale
in a month’s time. This is one of 3 sales they have on the
farm each year. We were amazed by the amount of
mass and substance that their bulls had on a very
moderate frame. After the tour, we were treated to an
excellent lunch and met the rest of the Sackmann family.
Most of our Monday was spent at the exhibition grounds
with the Junior Angus Judging Competition being the
main event for the day. Luckily the competition was
based on placing’s only, with no oral reasons necessary,
so our inability to speak Spanish didn’t stop us from
participating. There were 4 classes of Angus cattle to
judge ranging from calves to mature cattle, both bulls
and heifers. We very much enjoyed the chance to
analyze these Argentina show cattle that were nicely
presented in the sunny show ring. We were invited to the
awards banquet in the evening where we found out that
Chad placed 1st overall in our age division, with Patrick
close behind in 3rd. Both were given very nice trophies
for their accomplishment.
On Tuesday morning, the three of us hopped on a bus
that took us out of the city to meet Mariano. We then
drove about another hour to the Centre de Reproduccion
Bovina, an AI stud that was currently home to around 70
bulls. We were given a very thorough tour of the daily
operations at the facility including their different methods
of collection which were quite similar to back home. We
saw many impressive bulls, some of which were
previous champions at Palermo. On our way back to the
city, we stopped in a small town for a nice lunch and a
quick tour. That evening we watched the Invitational
Angus Sale that was held at the exhibition grounds.
Although it was difficult to follow the Spanish
auctioneers, with some help, we were able to get an idea
of what the cattle were selling for. Their auction style is
quite different from back home as the auctioneers
seemed to lack a rhythmic chant as we are accustomed
to. The hospitality at the sale was fantastic, with waiters
bringing around drinks, appetizers and Chile throughout
the duration of the sale. The high selling animal in the
sale sold for about the equivalent of $9,000 USD.
Wednesday was the calf show at Palermo. We watched
the entire female calf show in the morning, and then
went for a city tour of the historic downtown Buenos
Aires. We took an underground subway from the show
grounds to the downtown area. There we saw the
beautiful Cathedral as well as the Cabildo, the former
government headquarters. We also saw the national
bank and several other historic buildings which had been
well kept. We then returned to the grounds via the
subway to watch the end of the bull calf show. That
evening we went for a steak supper featuring excellent
Argentina grass-fed beef, possibly one of the best steak
suppers any of us had eaten.
The next two days we spent the majority of our time
watching the Angus Female show (Thursday) and Bull
show (Friday). We were very impressed with the number
of quality cattle that went through the ring in these two
days. A massive crowd turned out to watch around 250
impressive females parade in front of the Scottish judge,
culminating with a 2 year-old female being slapped
Grand Champion. On Friday we had to get a seat an
hour and a half before the start of the show to make sure
we had a good view of the ring. It poured rain throughout
the duration of the show, but the presence of rubber
boots and umbrellas meant that the show went on. When
it was all said and done around 5000 people had their
attention turned to the Angus ring to watch another 2
year-old get slapped Grand Champion Male. We were
following along in our show programs and were amazed
at how much North American influence there was in the
pedigrees on these cattle. Bulls like Density, Brilliance,
Net Worth, Final Answer, and Heavy Hitter were very
common as either the sire or maternal grand sire of
these animals. Throughout the duration of the Angus
show, the Hereford show was also happening in the
adjacent ring and we were able to watch that show
simultaneously. To us, the Herefords and the Angus
were the most impressive breed shows in Palermo.
On Friday evening there was an off-site Angus banquet
to celebrate the end of the show. International guests
were given free admission to the banquet which
ordinarily cost about the equivalent of $60 USD. The
evening was kicked off with a marching band, and then a
fantastic beef supper was served with wine and
champagne, followed by an awards ceremony. Each
operation that exhibited a champion at the show was
called up to receive their award and recognition. The
awards were followed by a dance to finish the evening.
On Saturday morning we went to the exhibition grounds
one last time to see the Parade of Champions, or as they
called it, ‘The Official Opening.’ By the time it began,
there was nothing left but standing room, and each of the
breed champions was walked out into the ring one last
time to receive recognition in front of the massive crowd.
A few of the dignitaries spoke and then each of the
animals left the ring. Shortly after, we left for the airport
to catch our mid afternoon flight.
These 8 days in Argentina gave us an excellent chance
to experience the Argentina culture, as well as to get a
glimpse of their very moderate framed cattle that boast
an abundance of substance and style. The breeders
were pleasant and passionate, and the hospitality was
excellent. A huge thank you goes to Mariano Etcheverry
for making it the trip that it was, and looking out for us
during our stay.
A special note of thanks to the Canadian Angus
Foundation for sending 3 Ambassadors on the trip of a
lifetime. The Canadian Junior Angus Ambassador
program is certainly the epitome of experiences for
Angus youth in Canada.

A note from CEO Rob Smith Good day CAA Members and happy Fall to you all!
We are very excited at Angus Central as we have completed the first CAA Member Directory in recent history. With pride and excitement… we bring you this valuable new member and commercial cattle sector tool. It is our goal to deliver this to you annually, so please keep it close – on your dining room table, near your reading chair, on your desk or your dashboard – because EVERYONE is right here… at your fingertips!
We want to thank Today’s Angus Advantage for collaborating with CAA on our new ‘strategic alliance’ and partnership. We will be working with them again on their February issue. This issue will be the bull buyers guide. Please call the office to learn more about this issue.
In other news…
Your CAA is working very hard through this period of strong prices to enhance member value and improve your member experience. 2015 marks commencement of our new 5-year business plan entitled “Enhanced Member Services: Building Our Future – Yes We Can!” and we are steadily achieving the objectives of our fresh plan:
Introduction of AC-TV, our new official source of communication with our members.
Relaunch of the ‘new and improved’ CAA website (which, if you are experiencing challenges with, please call us and we’ll help you figure it out!).
We are currently débuting the lower price, lower density Zoetis i50K genomic test, making this more affordable for you to improve the accuracies of your EPDs and build a genomic profile on your genetics.
The Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed feeder calf sales are organized again for the run this fall and winter and we appreciate our longstanding relationship with and support from Canada’s auction marts.
Our 2015 National Convention in Calgary and at your CAA headquarters, Angus Central, and GOAL Youth Conference in Guelph, ON both experienced our best attendance in recent memory while our national Junior Showdown was the same in Olds, AB (Lindsay, ON had more exhibitors but this year was our record-setting year of Angus cattle shown).
Thanks to you - your donations and support - the Canadian Angus Foundation’s “Building the Legacy 4” fundraiser auction brought our 4-year gross to over $392,000 which creates and assists with: 1) so many opportunities for so many youth (CJAA scholarships, awards and travel programs have grown exponentially); 2) historical preservation and restoration; and 3) breed research and development.
Return to normal routine parentage verification turnaround time, not exceeding 10 business days.
Introduction of a greater array of and improved member tools and services such as the Import Package, Sales Promotion Package and AI Sire and Donor Dam Approval processes.
Planning and implementation of industry-leading programs like Feedlot: MIP (Managing Innovation for Profit) and Carcass 101.
We at Angus Central strive to serve you the best that we can. We encourage you to call us if you need help and the ‘Angus Team’ will be happy to answer your questions.
