dear friends
What a great pleasure and privilege it has been to curate the festival and season outlined in this calendar! Early Music Vancouver plays a unique and increasingly large role in our region’s cultural life and I am thrilled to be a part in defining its continued success and evolution. We remain committed to casting works from musical history into fresh light and creating unique moments in time.
This calendar unveils a new logo and design for EMV — one that carries forward the tradition of visual richness that our audiences have come to expect from our materials. Our new logo demonstrates an ongoing commitment to great music of the past while acknowledging that whatever we present must transcend time and touch people today. The partial representation of a circular canon from the 16th century evokes the idea of layered voices from our past still resonating in harmony today.
Why flowers? Flowers, and roses in particular, are associated with passion, perfection, life, love, ephemera, fragility and the passage of time. A flower, like a live musical performance, exists most vividly for only a brief moment and then fades; its beauty is momentary yet eternal. We would like to thank Vancouver photographer Alex Waterhouse-Hayward, whose exquisite scans of roses from his garden inspired this calendar, and David Carlin for his invaluable help in choosing botanical images.
Warmest thanks to you, our audiences, and closest supporters, for your generosity and continued interest in EMV. I look forward to seeing you at a concert soon.

EARLY MUSIC IN CONTEXT
An early-evening summer series of free lectures, demonstrations and
presentations, on a wide variety of topics, 5:30–6:30pm, UBC Music Building.
For details: earlymusic.bc.ca
COLIN TILNEY CELEBRATES LXXXFRIDAY JULY 25, 2014 AT 8:00 PMRoundhouse Community Centre (181 Roundhouse Mews at Pacific Boulevard)Colin Tilney harpsichord
Turning 80 this year, Colin Tilney is a giant in early music: one of the first musicians to bring historically-informed performance to the general concert-goer’s awareness, and one of the few still actively performing today. He’ll perform “Quinque” by the South African composer Priaulx Rainier, Bach’s 6th English Suite, and elegant works by 18th-century French clavecinistes. Presented in collaboration with the Queer Arts Festival.
RAMEAU CANTATAS AND “PIÈCES DE CLAVECIN” SUNDAY JULY 27, 2014 AT 8:00 PM Roy Barnett Recital Hall (UBC School of Music, 6361 Memorial Road)Ellen Hargis soprano; Sylvia Szadovszki mezzo-soprano; Natalie Mackie viola da gamba; Marc Destrubé violin; Christopher Bagan harpsichord
Hot on the heels of a performance by a grand master of early music, we bring you a concert featuring a rising star. Renowned soprano Ellen Hargis curates this recital of Rameau cantatas and instrumental works, performing the famous “Orphée” cantata and lending her guidance and expertise in this elegant music to young mezzo-soprano Sylvia Szadovszki in her first appearance with Early Music Vancouver.
A MOMENT IN TIME: WEISS MEETS BACHTUESDAY JULY 29, 2014 AT 8:00 PM Roy Barnett Recital HallLucas Harris baroque lute; Alexander Weimann harpsichord
Two venerated composers, two eminent soloists, and two distinguished instruments. This shared recital explores the blurring of the lines between lute and harpsichord repertoire in the eighteenth century, when lutenists imitated harpsichord music — and vice versa. Our exploration begins in Italy, continues to France, and finishes in Germany with a tête-à-tête between two compositional masters: Sylvius Leopold Weiss and Johann Sebastian Bach.
Mahony and Sons is proud to sponsor Early Music Vancouver. Join us before or after your concert and make your experience a great one. For reservations visit mahonyandsons.com. We validate parking at our UBC location.

G.F. HANDEL’S “IL TRIONFO DEL TEMPO” (1707)THURSDAY AUGUST 7, 2014 AT 7:30 PM Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC(6265 Crescent Road, UBC campus) Alexander Weimann music director; Amanda Forsythe soprano; Krisztina Szabó soprano; Reginald L. Mobley alto; Colin Balzer tenor; Pacific Baroque Orchestra
After last summer’s groundbreaking performance of “Israel in Egypt” and the critical acclaim lavished on 2012’s “Orlando”, we’ve selected another extraordinary work from Handel’s oeuvre for our 2014 Festival centrepiece. Touring to the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival before coming to Vancouver — a first for EMV — this production will reach greater heights of artistic expression than ever before. Beauty and Pleasure abound in Handel’s first oratorio, the source of his ongoing genius.
“VANITAS VANITATUM”SATURDAY AUGUST 9, 2014 AT 8:00 PM Roy Barnett Recital Hall Les Voix Baroques: Hank Knox guest music director; Jacqueline Woodley soprano; Krisztina Szabó mezzo-soprano; Colin Balzer & Jacques-Olivier Chartier tenors; Sumner Thompson baritone
“Farewell laughter, farewell singing, farewell delights of the world!” wrote Luigi Rossi. In the 17th century, Roman composers were surrounded by the remains of one of the greatest civilizations the world has ever known, so it’s no surprise that their texts and music explore the passing of time and the ephemeral nature of physical beauty and pleasure. Music by Carissimi, Rossi, Marazzoli, and more.
SEQUENTIA: FRAGMENTS FOR THE END OF TIMEFRIDAY AUGUST 1, 2014 AT 8:00 PM Roy Barnett Recital Hall (UBC School of Music, 6361 Memorial Road)Sequentia ensemble for mediæval music: Benjamin Bagby voice & harp; Norbert Rodenkirchen flute
From the time of Christianity’s introduction into Europe until the end of the first millennium, apocalyptic images of the End of Days and the Last Judgement were widespread. In this programme, Sequentia explores the musical world of these surprising, powerful texts, some of which survive only as fragments, including German verses describing the terrible final day and a harrowing portrayal of the pagan Ragnarök, when ‘Muspell’s People’ and the armies of Surt and Loki launch their final, deadly assault on the northern European gods. Generously sponsored by Elaine Adair.
“MATIN, MIDI, SOIR”: EARLY HAYDN SYMPHONIESSUNDAY AUGUST 3, 2014 AT 8:00 PM Roy Barnett Recital HallEarly Music Vancouver Mentorship Orchestra
Early Music Vancouver’s brand-new Mentorship Orchestra Project offers students of exceptional ability one-on-one coaching from some of the most prominent instrumentalists in their field. After five days of intensive work on Haydn’s early symphonies — “Le Matin,” “Le Midi,” and “Le Soir” — these up-and-coming artists will perform with the faculty and other renowned professional artists in this extraordinary concert.
Generously sponsored by José Verstappen.

“Elemental emotional force.” — The Financial Times
Working closely with internationally renowned American tenor Michael Slattery, Montreal’s La Nef lend some of John Dowland’s music a simple Celtic flavor and breathe life into the possibility that one of the greatest English composers was actually an Irishman.
Since graduating from Juilliard, Michael Slattery has enjoyed an exciting international career. He has worked with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival, the French National Orchestra in Paris, the Akademie für Alte Musik in Berlin, and with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. Career highlights include Peter Sellars’ Tristan Project at Lincoln Center, the title role in Bernstein’s Candide at Royal Festival Hall in London, and Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at the Châtelet Theater in Paris, the Staatsoper in Berlin, and at Glimmerglass. His solo discs “The Irish Heart”, and “Secret and Divine Signs” received critical acclaim from Gramophone Magazine and Five Star ratings from BBC Music Magazine and Classic FM. Outside his musical activities, Michael Slattery devotes much of his spare time to painting and writing. Generously sponsored by Tony & Margie Knox.

MONTEVERDI’S “SONGS OF LOVE AND WAR”SUNDAY NOVEMBER 9, 2014 AT 3:00PMOrpheum Annex (823 Seymour Street)Pacific MusicWorks: Stephen Stubbs, music director; Catherine Webster & Danielle Reutter-Harrah, sopranos; Reginald L. Mobley, countertenor; Ross Hauck & Aaron Sheehan, tenors; Douglas Williams, bass
“The man is a genius. Oh, I meant Stubbs. But Monteverdi, too, was no slouch.” — The Seattle Times
Claudio Monteverdi’s eighth and last book of madrigals includes his most revolutionary and stirring music. In these works, Love and War become indivisible metaphors that Monteverdi evokes with the most exciting musical devices of the period. Book 8 represents the pinnacle of 17th-century musical expression and still has the power to move listeners today. Generously sponsored by Early Music Vancouver’s Board of Directors.
QUATUOR MOSAÏQUESSUNDAY NOVEMBER 2, 2014 AT 3:00PM Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton Street)Quatuor Mosaïques: Erich Höbarth & Andrea Bischof, violins; Anita Mitterer, viola; Christophe Coin, cello
“In a mosaic, every detail is seen to have been brilliantly thought out, yet the eye is also capable of apprehending the picture as a whole. It is the same with music: you have to work on the details, then you have to create the best possible listening conditions, and get the distance just right so that the listener can see how the elements have been put together, and at the same time get a complete view of the work of art.” — Christophe Coin
The four extraordinary players of the Quatuor Mosaïques return to Vancouver with a thrilling recital of music by Haydn, Mozart, and Schumann. Join us and experience the richness and vitality of this splendid repertoire. A collaboration with Friends of Chamber Music.

HAYDN’S “THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST” with poetry by Robert Bringhurst & Jan Zwicky – “The Crucifixion of the Earth”SATURDAY JANUARY 24, 2015 AT 8:00PMOrpheum Annex (823 Seymour Street)Marc Destrubé & Linda Melsted, violins; Steve Creswell, viola; Tanya Tomkins, cello; Robert Bringhurst & Jan Zwicky, poets
“Robert Bringhurst’s sinewy language and acute formal intelligence now reveal poetry of vivacity and stature, which can be enjoyed as a cultural treasure.” — Griffin Poetry Prize judges
“Marc Destrubé bared his soul without reserve, yet displaying gentlemanliness and humility”. — Neville Oliffe, Early Music News, Australia
In 1785 Josef Haydn wrote a chamber work based on the Biblical seven last words spoken by Christ on the cross. Traditionally, the words or phrases are spoken, followed by a meditation on those words, then by the music. EMV, in association with Green College at UBC, have invited renowned BC poets Robert Bringhurst and Jan Zwicky to prepare poetry for each of the seven movements that stimulates a dialogue based on the universal human qualities in the text and also in Haydn’s deeply affecting music. Generously sponsored by Mark Vessey & Maya Yazigi and Sherrill & John Grace.

G.F. HANDEL’S “THEODORA”SATURDAY FEBRUARY 14, 2015 AT 7:30PMChan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC (6265 Crescent Road, UBC campus)Alexander Weimann, music director; Nathalie Paulin, soprano; Krisztina Szabó, mezzo-soprano; Lawrence Zazzo, countertenor; Zachary Wilder, tenor; Matthew Brook, bass-baritone; Pacific Baroque Orchestra; Vancouver Cantata Singers
“Handel doesn’t miss a trick in creating spectacular choral effects; neither did music director Alexander Weimann in bringing them to life with theatrical cunning and an all-embracing sense of joy.” — The Vancouver Sun, review of G.F. Handel’s Israel in Egypt
“Alexander Weimann’s pacing of the action, choice of tempi and shaping of orchestral ritornellos are marvellous...One of the most consistently charming Handel opera recordings I’ve reviewed in ages.” — Gramophone Magazine, review of Handel’s Orlando
“Theodora” is of one of Handel’s largest-scale oratorios for soloists, choir and orchestra and was his personal favourite. Featuring some of the composer’s most glorious music, this tragic work depicts the self-sacrificial love between a Christian virgin and a Roman imperial bodyguard. It serves as a timeless parable of spiritual resistance to tyranny and an indictment of persecution, topics that still resonate with audiences today. This production features 28 members of the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, 40 members of the Vancouver Cantata Singers and five international soloists, all under the direction of Alexander Weimann. THE ENGLISH ORPHEUS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 25, 2015 AT 8:00PM Fox Cabaret (2321 Main Street) Charles Daniels, tenor; Alexander Weimann, harpsichord
“Weimann, by all accounts a musician of wide and varied interests and experiences,… plays with the utmost passion, vigour and virtuosity.” — Early Music America
“Charles Daniels…a transcendent vocal virtuosity.” — The Guardian
Charles Daniels is one of the most respected tenors of his generation. He has made over 100 recordings as a soloist including Handel’s Messiah with the Gabrieli Consort for Deutsche Grammophon and more than twenty discs of Purcell’s music, mostly with The King’s Consort. In this intimate recital of English song he is joined by renowned harpsichordist and conductor Alexander Weimann. Presented in cooperation with Music on Main. Generously sponsored by Sharon E. Kahn.

KRISTIAN BEZUIDENHOUT
March 8 at the Chan Centre
KRISTIAN BEZUIDENHOUT MOZART SONATASSUNDAY MARCH 8, 2015 AT 3:00PM Telus Studio Theatre at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (6265 Crescent Road, UBC campus)Kristian Bezuidenhout, fortepiano
“Bezuidenhout still shapes and shades this music with almost romantic finesse, and releases the historic instrument’s full expressive potential. In every register the sound changes: proudly growling down in the bass, bird-bright in the treble reaches, round and velvety in the middle.” — The Times, London
South African-born, London-based Kristian Bezuidenhout is ranked among the leading keyboard players of his generation. Although he’s best known for his fortepiano interpretations of music by Mozart, his repertory also includes works by Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn. EMV is thrilled to collaborate with the Vancouver Recital Society in bringing this inspiring and captivating young artist to Vancouver.
BEETHOVEN: THE COMPLETE WORKS FOR CELLO AND KEYBOARD FRIDAY MARCH 13, 2015 AT 7:30PM; SATURDAY MARCH 14, 2015 AT 3:00PM (LECTURE-DEMONSTRATION); SUNDAY MARCH 15, 2015 AT 3:00PM Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton Street)Steven Isserlis, cello; Robert Levin, fortepiano
Steven Isserlis has described playing the Beethoven Sonatas as “a journey through a life.” In this endlessly moving and thought-provoking series, the duo traverses through the early, middle, and late periods of the monumental composer’s life. A collaboration with the Vancouver Recital Society.
SONGS OF AN ENGLISH CAVALIERFRIDAY MARCH 27, 2015 AT 8:00PM Orpheum Annex (823 Seymour Street)Jeffrey Thompson, tenor; Ensemble La Rêveuse: Florence Bolton, treble & bass viols; Bertrand Cuiller, harpsichord; Benjamin Perrot, lute & theorbo
“Thompson and the group did not miss an opportunity to indulge in ravishing improvisations…though oh so English, the music paid more than a passing nod to the extremes of passion, clashing harmonies and florid style of Monteverdi.” — The Washington Post
After being selected to participate in the first Le Jardin des Voix with William Christie’s Les Arts Florissants, tenor Jeffrey Thompson has appeared with virtually all of the biggest names in early music. For his Vancouver debut he will perform a program of music by Henry Lawes accompanied by the Paris-based instrumentalists, La Rêveuse.

GOOD FRIDAY
CATHERINE WEBSTER & JOHN REISCHMAN
April 14 at the Fox Cabaret
AN AMERICAN TUNETUESDAY APRIL 14, 2015 AT 8:00PMFox Cabaret (2321 Main Street)John Reischman, mandolin; Stephen Stubbs, guitar; Tom Berghan, banjo; Brandon Vance, fiddle; Catherine Webster, vocals
This boundary-crossing programme features early and traditional musicians exploring some of the roots of the United States’ folk and popular music. “Old-time” songs are some of America’s own early music. In the mid-to-late 1800s, America witnessed a surge in publications of “popular” music: Civil War songs, slave songs, cowboy songs, minstrel plays and parlour songs, along with hymns and revival tunes. “An American Tune” spans this half-century, tracing particularly the path of old world British Isles folk music to the isolated rural areas of the United States. Catherine Webster (soprano) and Stephen Stubbs (lute, guitar and conductor) have spent careers based on the exploration of 17th and 18th century European music traditions and are now turning their interest to some of the first popular music of their own country.
They’ve come together now to create a gorgeous program of Foster songs, 19th-century hymns and reels, and exquisite arrangements of Appalachian early folk tunes and ballads. Presented in cooperation with Music on Main. Generously sponsored by Chris Guzy & Mari Csemi.
