HISTORY

“Then coal was found and nothing was ever the same…”

HISTORY

• Let there be industry!!

• Let there be Land!!!

• Let there be Arsenic

HISTORY: Let there be industry!• Pittsburg originally settled in 1839

• First Name: "New York Landing“

• Second Name "Black Diamond“

• Last Name: “Pittsburg”, February 11, 1911

HISTORY: Let there be Land!

• Slag used to fill in and reclaim

• Accounts for more than 35 % of land

• Contains Iron, Arsenic, Chromium, Lead

HISTORY: Let there be Arsenic

• As a significant byproduct of Coal Combustion

• As an element used in steel hardening and finishing

• As an antifungal compound in water cooling processes

• As a by product of smelting, cocking and hardening

• As a component of liquid wastes and wastewaters managed in unlined ponds on-site

Steel Manufac.1930-1985

Land Filling 1940 -1965

Hazardous waste management1940-1995

Steel Finishing 1985-2014

Corrective Action 1990 - 2014

Timeline

ARSENIC REMEDIES

• Can’t Destroy Arsenic

• Massive

• Extremely Expensive

• Disruptive

• Not in line with RP interest

BARRIERS

EXTRACTION

EX-SITU TREATMENT

DISRUPTION

CLEVER REMEDIES

• Re$ult Driven Design

• Re$ult Driven Analysis

• Re$ult Driven Reality

THE “SOLUTION”?

CLEVER INVESTIGATION

Let the desired outcome drive the “Results” of the investigation

CLEVER REMEDIATION

Lets “science” be subservient to the final desired outcome

Will not reveal the problem

Will not address the problem

May endanger the public

May endanger the environment
