“convivial public spaces are at the heart of democratic living and are one of the few remaining loci where we can encounter difference and learn to understand and tolerate other people”

“food is an incredibly powerful tool for connecting seemingly disparate issues . . . food is basically a design tool. If you design for food and food systems, you will inevitably address all considerations needed to create a sustainable, workable community.” Nicola Twilley. http://urbanomnibus.net/2010/02/food-and-the-shape-of-cities/!

NYC Horticultural. May 30, 2014!1 2 3 4 5

as a culture, we have designed food systems out of cities.

it’s time to design them back in.

I have a meeting Thursday with the folks I met at my table last Tuesday to work on fine tuning our plan for action . . . to get newly

retired teachers involved in school gardens for after school and summer teaching opportunities . . .  We would like to see the produce

from such a garden delivered directly to the Food Bank, the cafeteria and/or some central SE Raleigh market area/group like the SE Fertile Ground Food Co-Op.  And, we would REALLY like to get in

the conversation about changing sixty years of public school food policy to ensure that fresh healthy locally grown and dare I say

organic food is the rule, rather than the very rare exception.
