WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER?
The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system.
A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cun-ning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

PaulHoganHead Coach | University of Charleston (W.Va.), 1995
Third season at Coastal Carolina | 12-24-2
Sixth season overall | 47-41-9
Hogan is entering his third year as Coastal
Carolina’s head women’s soccer coach. He
was named the program’s fourth head coach
in January of 2011.
Coastal is coming off a dramatic improvement under
Hogan during his second season in 2012, notching eight
more victories than the previous year. The Chanticleers
fi nished 10-9 overall and went 7-4 in Big South play, in-
cluding a perfect 5-0 mark at home in which it outscored
its opponents 12-1 and knocked off three teams that
were in fi rst place at the time. The Chants decreased their
goals allowed from 40 in 2011 to a school-record 20 and
posted eight shutouts, the second-most in school history
while surrendering the fewest shots of any Big South
team. Hogan coached three Chants to All-Big South
honors, as forward Kacey Kelley was named to the fi rst
team, while midfi elder Fia Jonsson and defender Cami
Skladany were selected to the second team. Jonsson was
also tabbed the league’s Freshman of the Year. Addition-
ally, Kelley and Skladany earned conference Player of the
Week honors during the season.
Hogan’s fi rst season saw Coastal fi nish with a 2-15-2
record as the Chanticleers fell short in numerous one goal
games. Coastal piled up a season-high three goals in a
rout of VMI and backed up its performance with a thrill-
ing 1-nil defeat of UNC Asheville. Under Hogan’s direc-
tion, nine diff erent Chants found the back of the net with
three players doing so multiple times. The season also
saw Alyssa Clark earn second team All-Big South honors
for her standout defensive eff orts along with her team-
high three assists. Additionally, Cami Skladany garnered
Big South Defensive Player of the Week plaudits for the
week of Aug. 30 after she made a stellar defensive save
against Georgia Southern. Freshman goalkeeper Saun-
dra Baron made an immediate impact as she tallied 55
saves, which ranks ninth all-time in the Coastal annals.
Hogan was introduced as the fourth head women’s
soccer coach in Coastal Carolina history on Jan. 5, 2011.
“We are extremely excited to have Paul join our ath-
letics family at Coastal Carolina,” Yurachek said. “Paul’s
experience with building programs into contenders on
the national level, coupled with his recruiting prowess,
made him stand out among a great group of candidates.
He demonstrated to us a clear plan on how to build a
complete championship program - one that has been
successfully tested at other University’s - and we are ex-
cited to help him execute that plan. He will be a great
leader for the young women on our soccer team and a
great part of the Coastal Carolina community.”
Prior to Coastal, Hogan spent the previous 10 sea-
sons at the University of Colorado under head coach Bill
Hempen, the last fi ve as associate head coach. He help-
ing the Buff aloes compile a 104-64-24 (.604) record and
a national ranking at the end of the 2003, 2005, 2006
and 2008 seasons.
“I am thrilled for the opportunity to join the Coastal
Carolina family and community and lead the women’s
soccer program,” said Hogan. “The rich athletic tradi-
tions and academic excellence coupled with a great
campus location make Coastal Carolina a school full of
exponential potential. The women’s soccer program has
been successful since its inception, and I look forward to
challenges of meeting the standards set by the previous
coaches and taking Coastal Carolina women’s soccer to
the next level.”
Hogan was hired at Colorado in 2001. Two years
later, Hogan helped direct the Buff aloes to a 2003 Big XII
regular season title, the fi rst in school history, and Big
XII Tournament Finals in 2005, 2006 and 2008. In his 10
years, the Buff aloes competed in six NCAA Tournaments,
including a run to the Sweet 16 during the 2006 season.
During Colorado’s 14-6-4 season of 2006, the Buff s
were ranked 15th nationally in total attendance and sec-
ond in the Big XII.
In addition to his duties as associate head coach on
the Boulder campus, Hogan also spent nine seasons
coaching the Colorado Olympic Development Program
(ODP) teams.
Prior to his arrival in Boulder, Hogan spent three sea-
sons at Allegheny College where he guided the Gators to
a 35-16-7 (.686) overall record and 17-6-2 (.739) North
Coast Athletic Conference mark, while producing 16 All-
NCAC players.
His three Gator teams fi nished no lower than third
in the fi nal NCAC standings and his 1999 squad won a
school-record six conference matches, a feat duplicated
by the 2000 team, earning Hogan conference Coach of
the Year accolades with his student-athletes earning
NCAC Newcomer and Off ensive Player of the Year post-
season honors.
Hogan made the leap to head coach in April 1998
from Duke where he was an assistant for the 1996 and
`97 seasons. He assisted the Blue Devils to a two-year
record of 28-11. In 1997, Duke fi nished 15-5-0, includ-
ing a 4-2-0 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference action, and
won the ACC tournament championship. Over his two
seasons, Hogan helped coach three All-Americans and
11 All-ACC selections.
Previously, Hogan spent one season contributing at
his alma mater, the University of Charleston (W.Va.), as
a volunteer assistant. He helped Charleston to a 17-3 re-
cord and an NCAA Division II playoff berth in 1995.
Hogan graduated from Charleston in 1995 with
a bachelor’s degree in sports science. There, he was a
three-time All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference selection at goalkeeper. He earned All-South
Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Associa-
tion in both 1993 and 1994, and led the Golden Eagles to
WVIAC championships in 1992 and 1994.
Born August 22, 1972, the Monroe, N.Y., native is a
1990 graduate of Washingtonville High School. He is the
oldest of two and his younger sister Nancy also played
collegiate soccer at Elon. In what little free time he has,
Hogan likes to golf.
He married former Colorado assistant coach Alli Hunt
in May of 2008.The Hogans welcomed their fi rst son De-
clan Brady Hogan on February 11, 2010 and their second
son Carrig James Hogan on February 28, 2012.

ChrisGnehmAssistant Coach | Averett, 1997
Second season at Coastal Carolina
Gnehm is entering his second year as Coastal
Carolina’s assistant coach.
In Gnehm’s fi rst season, the Chanticleers re-
corded eight more victories than the previous year,
went 5-0 in Big South Conference home games and set
a school-record for fewest goals allowed with 20. Gnehm
coached three All-Big South Conference selections in for-
ward Kacey Kelley, midfi elder Fia Jonsson and defender
Cami Skladany.
Gnehm comes to Coastal after spending the 2011
campaign as the top assistant at Pac-12 member Colo-
rado. Prior to his time with the Buff aloes, Gnehm spent
nine successful seasons as an assistant women’s soccer
coach at Florida Atlantic, a member of the Sun Belt Con-
ference. He was the Owls top assistant the last three sea-
sons and served as the goalkeeper coach from 2002-07.
“I am eager to get started with my duties here at
Coastal Carolina,’ said Gnehm. “I welcome the challenge
of helping Paul build the program into a team that will
contend for conference championships and NCAA tour-
nament appearances.
“I am blessed to have the opportunity to work for
such a close friend and someone I respect so much on
and off the fi eld. I feel like my last season with the Uni-
versity of Colorado and experiences in the Pac-12 will be
an asset to me and the program. I will bring a tireless
work rate and passion for the job and the game and will
expect and demand the same of our players. I am excited
to be working at a great University with an amazing loca-
tion, being back at the beach is a good thing.”
Gnehm, who has a background in goalkeeping,
played a key role in directing an excellent FAU defense.
In 2006, the Owls led all NCAA Division I teams in shut-
out percentage (.762), holding opponents scoreless in 16
of 21 matches. A year later, FAU’s second year in the Sun
Belt, the team posted nine shutouts and allowed just 15
goals.
His collegiate coaching career started at his alma
mater, Averett (Va.) University, where he was an assis-
tant coach from 1996-98. He then became the assistant
coach for the men’s soccer program at Monmouth (N.J.)
University from 1998-99 before heading to Ferrum (Va.)
College to be the head men’s soccer coach as well as a
women’s tennis coach from 1999-2001. In addition to his
coaching credentials, he led the Soccer Plus Goalkeep-
ing School (Wethersfi eld, Conn.) during the summer of
1995. He is a member of the National Soccer Coaches As-
sociation of America.
Gnehm earned a bachelor’s degree in physical edu-
cation in 1997 from Averett, where he was a four-year
starter at goalkeeper and team captain from 1993-96.
He still holds Averett’s school record for most saves in a
single season and career.
Gnehm is originally from Bayville, N.J., graduating
from Central Regional High School where he earned fi rst
team All-State soccer honors as a senior in 1992. During
his free time, Gnehm participated in nearly 60 com-
mercials as an actor/model from 1979-1988. He helped
promote products such as Cracker Jacks, Nike, Colleco
Vision, Cheetos, Life Cereal and Jell-O Pudding. He also
appeared in print ads for Wrangler Kid, Gravy Train and
FAO Schwartz.
Gnehm recently became engaged to Tiff any Reeves
and the couple are planning a January 2014 wedding.

The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team has called the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field home since the 2002 season. The Chanticleers opened the fi eld with a 2-1
win over Appalachian State Sept. 1, 2002, and have won over 58 percent of their games on the home turf. Coastal Carolina and the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field hosted the
2006 Big South Women’s Soccer Championships and the men’s squad has hosted fi rst-round NCAA Tournament games in 2003 and 2012.
The Coastal Carolina Soccer Field features a full-size pitch with natural grass and bleacher seating on the East size of the complex. A press box and new scoreboard were installed
in 2004 and improvements to the aesthetics of the fi eld have been ongoing.
The Coastal Carolina Soccer Field surely holds a distinctive home fi eld advantage for the Chants as the program is 58-31-10 all-time within its friendly confi nes.
The Chants will play eight regular-season home games in 2013, beginning with the season-opener against Elon on Friday, August 23. It will mark the program’s 100th game
on its homefi eld. Coastal will also play host to the Big South Conference Tournament this year for the second time.

RETIRED NUMBERRETIRED NUMBER
In a ceremony prior to the 2011 women’s soccer alumni game (April 9, 2011), the alumni and current team came together to pay the ultimate homage to a former player, dear friend and role model by offi cially retiring April Erin Stirton’s number 26 from the women’s soccer program. Stirton’s number was retired almost a year to the day after the CCU women’s soccer family suff ered the devastating and tragic loss of Stirton.
Stirton, from Waxhaw, N.C., proudly wore the number 26 for the Chanticleers. She entered Coastal Carolina as a junior transfer from Wingate College in the fall of 2002, playing two seasons as a Chanticleer under former head coach Karrie Miller. During that time, Stirton displayed her talent, skill and competitive drive to earn a starting position on the CCU fi eld and simultaneously became an immediate member of the women’s soccer family with her southern charm, compassion and unique personality. During her soccer career at Coastal Stirton started in 38 of the 39 games in which she appeared. Over the 2002-03 seasons, Stirton’s contributions on the defensive end helped lead the Chants to a Big South Championship in 2003.
While at Coastal, she was an actively involved student-athlete, was a two-year starter on the women’s soccer team, was a member of the Coastal Carolina University National Competition Cheerleading Squad, an intramural basketball star and a dedicated student of the Wall College of Business.

Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in
the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 2011-12, the Big South had a
record fi ve individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the
most of any Division I conference, as well as a record 42 All-Americans.
This past season, the Big South had 32 student-athletes earn
All-America distinction, while another 12 were named Academic All-
Americans. The Conference also had two football playoff teams – and
two playoff wins -- for the fi rst time, had a women’s basketball team win
a postseason game for the fi rst time since 2005, had a League-record
four men’s basketball teams selected for postseason play, had two men’s
soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive
season, and had two men’s and women’s golf programs selected for
NCAA Regional play.
Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached
national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell
made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of fi ve
former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; High Point’s
Tamas Kovacs qualifi ed for the 2012 London Games; VMI’s Reggie
Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010,
UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star
in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won seven PGA Tour
events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former
Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012,
while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball
player to play in the WNBA two years ago.
The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics”
was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th
Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best
of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty
University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-
2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s fi rst 25 years.
The Conference’s on-fi eld accomplishments have been duplicated in the
classroom. For the past four years, nearly 50 percent of Conference’s
student-athletes were named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll
for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and the
League has had more than 110 Academic All-Americans in its history.
Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double fi gure totals in NCAA
Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last four years. As part
of this year’s 30th anniversary celebration, the League will recognize
All-Decade Teams for each sport spanning the Conference’s fi rst three
decades of existence.
BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Embarking on its 30th year in 2013-14, the Big South Conference
has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively
pursuing excellence on the fi eld of play and in the classroom. The
League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is
evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative
marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and
quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic,
personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-
athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing
Leaders Through Athletics.”
The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when
Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard
Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting
members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from
Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop.
One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s
fi rst Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His eff orts
led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville,
giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute
an offi cial conference. The Big South’s fi rst year of competition was in
the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was
granted full-fl edged NCAA Division I status.
During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA
Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large
berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball,
women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy”
Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990,
the League received its fi rst automatic bid – receiving an automatic
qualifi er to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven
years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations
and compliance programs, and introduced its fi rst-ever men’s basketball
television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of
the fi nest teams in the nation.
In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s
third Commissioner, and in his 17 years at the helm of the Big South,
Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference
to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing
revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big
South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer,
volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the fi rst time in Conference history, as
well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole
through aggressive and unique television packages.
Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and
initiated its fi rst long-range strategic plan, re-affi rming the League’s
vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of
institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the
eff orts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition
in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track &
fi eld in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander
has solidifi ed Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member
institutions comprise the 30-year old League. Recent additions include
High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the
return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range
vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference
introduced its fi rst live video streaming event in 2005 and has since
expanded its video off erings to more than 900 events annually through
a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of
several online and social media platforms.
Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced
monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this
time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times,
has had more than 300 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in
men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national
Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s
basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & fi eld, and men’s golf, had
an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven
times in addition to the fi rst men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had
the fi rst women’s golf program advance to the national fi nals, had the
No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring
men’s basketball team fi ve consecutive years as well as the national
men’s basketball scoring leader twice, has received two at-large playoff
berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since 2006, has had
six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions fi nish in the top 10
in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s
highest-ever team fi nish in an NCAA event (fi fth in 2007).
In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to
have an at-large participant in the football playoff s (Coastal Carolina),
a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament
(Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal
Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1
seed four times -- including a national seed for the fi rst time in 2010,
while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fi fth-
year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw
Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross
country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach
the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being
ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls;
and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the fi rst
time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA
National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run),
the Big South had its fi rst automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal
Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s
Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the
fi rst in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of
