2 Samuel 22 and Psalm 18 are the same song:

A song of praise and thanksgiving written by David.

Psalm 98 1 O sing unto the LORD a new song; for He hath done marvelous things: His Right Hand, and His Holy Arm, hath gotten Him the victory.

God likes it when we make up songs to Him and about Him.

There’s Victory in Jesus.

3

2 Samuel 22 1 And David spake unto the LORD the Words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:

Saul tried many times to kill David; he definitely saw himself as David’s enemy.

But neither David nor the Lord viewed Saul as the enemy of David.

David passed up opportunities to kill Saul.

4

2 And he said, The LORD is my Rock, and my Fortress, and my Deliverer; 3 The God of my Rock; in Him will I trust: He is my Shield, and the Horn of my Salvation, my High Tower, and my Refuge, my Savior; Thou savest me from violence.

We praise the Lord for Who He is,

and for what He has done.I worship Him as Savior and Lord, Healer,

Provider, Protector, Comforter.

And I thank Him for saving me, keeping me, healing me, providing my needs, and on and on.

5

4 I will call on the LORD, Who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. 5 When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid; 6 The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented (confronted) me; 7 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and He did hear my voice out of His Temple, and my cry did enter into His Ears.

David was a courageous man of God, a man of great faith.

Yet at times, he was afraid and in distress.

6

What did David do when he was afraid and in distress? He cried out unto God Almighty:

His Rock and Fortress, his Shield and Strength, his Refuge, and

High Tower. That needs to be the very first thing we think of to do in times of trouble!

7

7 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and He did hear my voice out of His Temple, and my cry did enter into His Ears.

God will hear your cry and my cry when we are in distress.

But we must cry out unto Him, believing He

will hear and answer.

8

8 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of Heaven moved and shook, because He was wroth. 9 There went up a smoke out of His nostrils, and fire out of His mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it. 10 He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under His feet.

This is a very poetic description of how David saw God moving for him in time of trouble.

Dramatic and Powerful

9

11 And He rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and He was seen upon the wings of the wind. 12 And He made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies. 13 Through the brightness before Him were coals of fire kindled.

God will send angels

when we need them.

10

14 The LORD thundered from Heaven, and the most High uttered His Voice. 15 And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them. 16 And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

11

17 He sent from above, He took me; He drew me out of many waters; 18 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me. 19 They prevented (confronted) me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my Stay (Protector and Support).

Lightning flashed, thunder rolled, the water of

the seas rose high, and the foundations of the

earth shook with God’s anger.

David knew that God used nature and the earth to defend him from enemies.

12

20 He brought me forth also into a large place: He delivered me, because He delighted in me.

The Contemporary English Version says this:

“When I was fenced in, You freed and rescued me because You love me.”

God loves you, and God loves me.

His philosophy toward us is simple:

“Whatever it takes.”

Are you in a tight spot?

13

21 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath He recompensed me. 22 For I have kept the Ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

Rewards and blessings in this life come according to the way we live our lives.

Don’t wickedly forsake the Lord God.

Walk in His Ways.

14

23 For all His Judgments were before me: and as for His Statutes, I did not depart from them. 24 I was also upright before Him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity. 25 Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in His Eye Sight.

Blessings come through willing obedience to God.

What matters is how does God see us.

It’s not how we see ourselves and feel about it.

15

I want to emphasize a couple of points in closing.

22 For I have kept the Ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

Too many folks think it a small thing to walk away from God and live their own way.

The Bible says plainly it is wicked to walk away from God and His Ways.

16

Do you want the blessing of a good life?

Keep the Ways of the Lord;

Live according to His Word.

Whole

17

24 I was also upright before Him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.

James 1 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth He any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

It is by “our own lust” that we are drawn away from God.

18

Know that The Lord rewards everyone who keeps His Ways and does not

wickedly depart from Him.

21 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath He recompensed me. 22 For I have kept the Ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

PerseveranceKeep on keeping on.
