Music with a Message
Every week, while we study Anne Frank, we’ll be listening to a variety of music that relates to this time period. Your job is to tell me how the song relates to the Holocaust, The Diary of Anne Frank, or World War II. The first song we’ll be listening to is called “Kenji” by Fort Minor. Listen to the song, read the lyrics, and figure out how it relates. Then, in your journal, you need to explain how it relates.
Music with a Message
Example:
In my opinion, “Kenji,” by Fort Minor, logically relates to World War II. It’s about a Japanese family that’s forced into an internment camp in the U.S. after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It’s also about prejudice and hatred. For instance, there’s a line that says, “Japs not welcome any more” (Fort Minor, “Kenji”). These words are written on Kenji’s wall when he returns home once the war is over.
Music with a Message
Example:
Jack Johnson’s song, “The News,” connects to the Holocaust for several reasons. The most important, in my opinion, is the fact that it discusses how we’re unaffected by the deaths of people we don’t know. One line even says, “A billion people died, on the news tonight, but not so many cried at the terrible sight” (Johnson, “The News”). And, while I am saddened by the deaths I see on TV, I rarely ever cry or get angry about them.
Music with a Message
Example:
“One,” by U2, is a song written in the ’80s, yet it still connects with many aspects of the Holocaust and even The Diary of Anne Frank. The song discusses the importance of standing up for each other, making sacrifices for each other, and even loving one another. One line says, “We get to carry each other” (U2, “One”). This reminds me of Miep and everything she did to care for the families in hiding, and how she carried them as long as she could.
