Situation

• This 71-year old female patient has problems with retention of the denture in the lower jaw

• Diagnosis– Enough bone volume to place two 13 mm

Brånemark implants of 13 mm• Treatment plan

– Insertion of 2 implants– 1ste STL drill guide in the world

Rationale

• This was the first clinical test of the surgical drill guide of Materialise (Leuven, Belgium)

• Since at that time, no experience existed in the field, a very simple case was selected

• In case the drill guide would not work, the surgeon could go on using his traditional surgical technique

• The surgery was performed in Ziekenhuis Oost Limburg, Genk, Belgium on 26 august 1997.
