What do i need to Know Before i apply? Ifyouchoosetoapplyforoneofthecoursesofferedbythisprogrammeitisimportantthatyouconsiderafewthings.Firstofall,itisvitalthatyoureallyunderstandthatanyoptionatcollegeisnotseparatefromtheworkyoudoatschool.ThechoicesthatyoumakeareallpartofyourYear10andYear11programme.Tobesuccessfulyoumustworkequallyhardandhavegoodattendanceatcollegeandschool.

Youneedtobeawarethatwhenyouareoff-siteyouarerepresentingyourschoolwhichputsalotofresponsibilityonyoutoactinanadultway-thewayinwhichallotherstudents,ofallages,areexpectedtoact.Itmaynotsoundverymuchbutitisthekeytoyoubeingsuccessfulduringtheprogramme.IfyouearnaplaceontheprogrammeyoumaybeworkinginareasthatarepotentiallyverydangerousandyouwillbeexpectedtounderstandthisandbehaveinawaythatisdemandedbytheCollege.

Becauseyouwillbeinanadultenvironmenttherelationshipswiththelecturers,otherstudentsandsupportstaffwillbedifferent.Youwillbetreatedasadults,withrespectandcourtesy,andwewillexpectyoutotreatotherpeopleinthesameway.

Ifyouthinkaboutcollegeinthesamewaythatpeoplethinkaboutbeingatwork,thisisonlywhatisnormallyexpected.YouwillalsobeexpectedtosignanagreementwiththeCollegejustthesamewaythatanemployeewouldsignacontractatwork.

Itisalsoveryimportantforyoutoknowthatitisnoteasytogetontothisvocationalprogramme(placesarelimited)andyouwillneedtobereallycommittedtotheprogramme.

Youmustalsorememberthatallthestaffwhoworkwithyouwillhelpyoumakethechangetoanewwayofdoingthings,butYOUmustalsohelpyourselftobesuccessfulonyourchosencourse.Finally,youshouldnotethatalotofstudentshaveaveryenjoyableandsuccessfultimeonthesecourses.

What the qualification offersThiscourseisausefulstartingpointinacareerincaringforchildren.Youwilllearnthebasicskillsofcaringforchildrenandhowtosupporttheirlearningthroughcompletingtheawardandcertificateinthefirstyearandprogressingtothediplomainthesecondyear.Examplesofunitsstudiedinclude:

• planningforthephysicalcareandneedsofchildrenagedbirthtothreeyears

What the qualification offers Thiscourseaimstoprovideanenvironmentwhereyoucanmatureanddevelopattitudesandanapproachtolifeappropriatetothecareerofyourchoice.Itinvolvesyoucompletingsixdifferentunitstogiveyouaknowledgeandunderstandingoftheskillsandresponsibilitiesofpublicserviceemployees.Youwillbeinvolvedinclassroom-basedactivitiesformuchofyourlearning,howevertherewillberegularfitnesssessionsandaprogrammeofadventuretrainingandvisits,includingDartmoorexpeditionsandvisitstosomesectorsoftheuniformedpublicservices.
